Rebel Transport or Tantave IV?

By TBot, in X-Wing

I'm considering buying one of these ships. Has anyone played through both of their campaigns? Which campaign did you enjoy more?

I'm leaning towards Rebel transport because it comes with an x-wing with Tarn and Wes. I've proxied all the upgrade cards already so I'm not too concerned about them. The only thing that will really tip the scales is the enjoyment of their campaigns.

Thanks in advance.

One thing you might want to consider (can't comment on the campaigns, sorry) is the greater versatility of the transport. The Tantive IV doesn't even see play in all Epic Games, whereas the transport is too cheap not to be included. But I own all Huge Ships, so... ^^

You know you will end up buying all epic ships after you buy your first one, lol

From an epic standpoint, the Raider is just way more powerful/efficient than the Tantive. More epic expansions could certainly help/fix this, but right now, the Imperials own most epic play.

From a "what does each come with" standpoint, you get the stress-bot R3-A2 and a few moderate X-wing pilots with the Transport, and 3P0 with the Tantive. Since 3P0 became a prize card last year, there are a lot more of him out there. I for one had 4 and normally give him out to new players in our group. SOOOOOO... it depends what your collection needs.

I like the transport more in epic, plus it comes with another Xwing plus some of the best pilots and crew. Really a no brainer to me. The corvette... It has guns but it's an awkward ship to fly with. Still learning how best to use it, I guess.

One thing people over look. The Raider can kill fighters really well, but the Tantive can murder Raiders with very little effort. And a single turbo laser battery and you can kill the front of a raider before it gets in range. Especially with its secret weapon, Roark Garnet

I've only played through the CR-90 campaign, but I've done every mission. Also, my podcast reviewed every single mission for the CR-90. We also did dramatic readings for the mission intros.

If you like playing rebels (obviously) the transport has a lot of cool droids and X-wing pilots (Wes, Tarn, R3-A2, R4-D6 etc). The best card of the Corvette was C3PO, which was a free tournament card last year. Han Solo crew is also a bit too special.

I don't know about Epic play

Transport. Awesome upgrades which are the base for a ton of competitive rebel lists AND a awesome ship for epic ANd an good campaign. The CR90 might be a little more iconic and if you want to for that reason then go for it, but the Rebel Transport is the more round package and should imho come first.

As others have mentioned, the tantive IV comes basically just with C3PO and that is a car which was able in larger numbers outside of the expansion.

Tantive has pretty much no value in it unless you really want to field it in epic. It offers nothing for the normal game, in fact the only non-huge cards in there are outright terrible outside of epic anyway (han/leia)

Transport has some good xwing pilots, droids, and the ship itself sees a lot more use.

Honestly the ONLY reason i even have the Tantive is because of Coolstuffinc having a sale that basically was "buy the tantive, have a transport for free!" lol

While I love how the CR90 looks, I went with the transport myself. I really like all the x-wing pilots and droids it comes with. Also the campaign is cool too.

The CR90 doesn't have a ton that it brings to the table for other forms of play, save for a few unique crew cards which are nice.

Right now I'd say the transport is the better option purely for R3-A2. I don't see much else from either set being played right now.

YOU NEED BOTH... PLUS, PLUS, PLUS!!!

Never flown the GR75 and have flown the CR90 several times, smashes the Raider easy enough but will struggle against multiple small ships, if you are playing Epic it's a good ship for broadsides, if you are after upgrades the transport has it plus the alternate painted X-wing - Tarn is cool!

Thinking of playing the GR75 as a battering ram. The Gozanti is cool also might try to launch four Tie Ints. off it this weekend.

I have all the huge ships and play Epic reasonably regularly. While the GR-75 is the easier of the two to work with once you have your head around the CR-90 (and the cards from the Gozanti) it is the most effective ship you can have in Epic. It has it's vulnerabilities but propper use of hard points and fighter escort cover them off well and as has been previously mentioned taking out the front section of a Raider before it is even able to shoot back is a game changer.

The Rebel Transport comes with Porkins.

That's basically it for me.

the Tantive is better for epic play .... The transport comes with the best upgrade stuff for the rest of your x-wing games :)

From memory

Transport

Pros:

Cool xwing repaint

Good xwing extra pilots

Nice model

Makes great 'rock replacement' scenery for games

Cons:

From memory the campaign requires *three* transports for the last mission so you cant play it through without loaning or proxying some others.

Tantive

Pros:

C3p0 is interesting if you play the falcon

More useful in epic (well it can shoot, the transport buffs but has no weapons)

Excellent and really good fun campaign

Nice model, makes good scenery too but you have to say its 'disabled' to explain it not shooting everything.

Cons:

Big and awkward to store

No real use other than scenery outside epic play

much more expensive

Both ships are great shelf pieces, the Tantive More so, even if you don't play epic ALL the time, you know you still have something that ties your shelf of x-wing miniatures together having it.

And considering how useful the T-65 x-wing IS currently in the game, it really isnt giving you any benefits to buy the transport over the Tantive. They are next to useless sadly from what I understand looking through the forums with the exception of Biggs as a meat shield and even then. doesnt Really do THAT much

GR-75. The campaign, for which you only need a reasonable standard X-Wing collection and one transport (the mission with three transports is an additional one outside the campaign), is one of my favourite things ever in X-Wing. It has so much replay value because of the rules for building your squadrons, it is well balanced if you don't use too crazy ships (having only x7 Defenders for the Empire would suck hard for Rebels i imagine), it can be played through in one (long, I'll give you that) session and it is just overall a blast!

Then the ship itself is lots of fun in epic matches, I like it better than the CR-90 which I have only seen go down in flames so far. It can be build in a myriad of ways, as Stressdealer, debuffer, buffer, battering ram, hybrid of any of these - its vastly customizable at a very low price point.

This.

The Transport is iconic in a way almost beyond the CR-90 mostly due to the fact it looks nothing at all like any other space lore film ship of any created world, even way beyond Star Wars. Plus, it's cheaper, easier to store, easier to field (on a mat) and seemingly much more customizable (thanks to the Admiral being so eloquent and specific).

I will say however, the Shuttle Tydirium crew almost has me at adding a CR to my crazy fleet; they're good, real good.

Plus, beyond Wes and Tarn, you get "the duo" that almost matched the iconic Skywalker and R2-D2:

I'm going to buck the trend and say the CR-90. I just love the model. Both are worth having though and you can usually pick up the Transport pretty cheap.

I think this sums it up. Many of the people on here will never play epic, so the response they give is the ship that gives you items not for epic. That's the GR75. So, bear in mind when you see a lot of people say the GR75 that they have no intentions of ever using it. They just want the extra stuff that comes with it. Counter point to that is that there are other stuff that comes with it. I mean, you do get some new X-wing pilots and astromechs. Just make sure to actually fly them and not sit there and say X-wings are broken.

The GR75 campaign could easily be better. I wasn't impressed with the CR90 campaign, but with a few tweaks, those issues can be fixed. If you play it as is, then it's not so hot. Part of it is bad writing. Another part is new stuff coming out that unbalances it. If you just count up the points of the CR90 they give you and then you can build your own ship from those points (and proxy the fixes from the Gozanti) then you go a long way towards fixing the whole campaign. There are just one or two missions you should just tweak a bit.

If you are looking to then play more Epic battles beyond the campaign, then I think the CR90 is the better choice. It's a good ship in epic once you learn how to fly it. It can rip apart a Raider before it really gets in range with longer range firepower. If you get caught by a Raider in it's kill arc, though, then you are toast. I don't recommend letting the front half blow up and then ramming with it as the rules then mean you never take damage. Just think of the CR90 as a circling ship that likes to broadside and the Raider as someone that has all it's guns forward facing. It makes for a dynamic game.
