The Gamblewraith is done! 5 hours later since it's my first shapeways model I've ever attempted and it took way more time and more layers than usual to get where I wanted it. Ended up building into a nice lustrous ivory with 4 different whites intermixed with green marble shavings to give it a really pretty holographic quality and then added around 4 decades of wear and tear onto the old star courier. Something really cool that I didn't expect; The entire model has a somewhat transparent quality that I utilized to make the wing panels look translucent over the radiators. It actually looks like real glass with a coat of gemshade on one side and nuln oil on the other coated in the holographic white. By far my favorite thing about the model and how it came out. I may or may not apply some ardcoat to the outside to smooth out some of those 3d print lines, but theyre so small that you can'y notice them unless you're really looking hard at it.

The corresponding pilot card and dial.

Nice to see the painted model.

But....

Without causing offense.

Can I make a suggestion.

A while ago we lost the paint forum due to some on the painting forum using, unlicensed products.

Shapeways, Mel's miniatures and so on.

FFG took a dim veiw of this and removed the paint forum !

I know this as I directly asked FFG as to why they removed the painting forum.

And the reason was..... Unlicensed products.

It is fun to paint models and share them.

But might I ask we all stick to official licensed products.

Or what happened before will happen again.

And we will lose the painting forum.

Sorry to be a grouch.

But I do feel the need to mention such an issue with a case like this.

Regards.

Barry.

Of course, no worries.

Do you suppose they would take issue with modified versions of their ships being displayed? I've posted several ships that were built from the parts of ships I had purchased from them and in all honesty I intend to modify this particular ship using pieces from more of their models as well.

By all means yes.

Feel free to show and share your work with others.

As long as it's the official X wing miniatures.

You can customise and repaint the FFG models as much as you like.

" They even allow modified models in official tournaments ! "

It's just the Unlicensed products they don't like.

And will clamp down on.

Which is understandable.

Please share your models with the forum community.

It's always great to see new people enjoying Painting and customising there miniatures.

All the best.

Barry.

So, for instance, were I to use model parts from licensed FFG products to construct or modify a unique ship not intended for sale or tournament play would that be allowed? If I were to add a set of engines to the Star Courier from a G-1A starfighter would that then be alright to post? Forgive me if I'm asking too many questions, just want to make sure I'm abundantly clear on what is and isn't allowed to be posted.

Ha Ha yes.

Basically do almost anything you like.....Just refrain from showing things like Shapeways models.

If you look through other peoples posts, you will get the idea.

I myself heavily modify many FFG miniatures.

Almost to the point they are unrecognisable !

And kit bashing on to the FFG models should be ok to.

It's just company's like Shapeways and Mel's miniatures sell Star Wars models...But Unlicensed !

They are making money from some one elses property.

That's the problem.

And that's why we lost the Painting forum last time.

Have fun, feel free to modify your models and share them with everyone.

All the best,

Barry.

@Refugenoth: As long as you're modifying existing FFG/X-wing Miniatures you're good to go. It's when a ship or other product that is wholly not part of their line is being posted that's the issue here. Scratch-builds aren't really a problem, in case you're curious.

Be proud of your work, just be mindful of where you're showing it.

So, showing other companies models is the thing I'm sort of asking about specifically.

For instance, my ARC-X1 model kitbashed 2 ARC-170 models together, but I also used the rear wing from a tumbler Batmobile as the mounting point for the wings. I used a hotwheels LAAT for my Razorback Alliance Tactical Carrier, but I trimmed it up with parts from multiple ffg ships. Are you saying that sort of thing (using something like the the star courier from shapeways as a base for parts in a scratchbuild that uses FFG model parts) is indeed allowed?

You're good. Nothing to sweat there. You're using FFG product and spicing it up with parts from elsewhere.

Looks like I'm definitely slapping some extra guns on the Gamblewraith then :P Was actually thinking of taking 4 tie striker wings and replacing the folding panels on this with those instead.

Anyone have any recommendations as far as making a hinge for the tie striker wings?

Hmmm well the way I might do it is.

Remove the wing but leave the hinge section on the body.

then drill a small hole with a pin vice and slide in a very thin piece of Steele.

" something like a needle "

only needs to poke out from each side of the hinge stub a few Milometers.

but don't glue the pin in the Hinge....this is how it will move up and down.

Then on the wing.

make two long slots, either with a fine dremmel or.......a hot sharp knife will do it !

the pin sticking out from each side of the hinge will then sit in the slots of each wing, applying a small amount of superglue.

hinged wing.

Im sure others will have different ideas.

But there's one if it makes any sense. :D

Dig it. I'll give that a shot! Thankfully I picked up 4 strikers when they were in stock so I've got a pair I can use for parts :P

Cool !

Well i'm looking forward to seeing the pics when you make the modification. :D

and i'm sure others will be too.

All the best,

Barry.
