Much more hate here that I thought there would be for The Force Awakens....

If I wanted to watch A New Hope, I'd watch A New Hope, not it's crappy millennial remake.

Which is fair enough, but my point was that I am surprised that if some people want to watch Star Wars, they'd rather watch TPM or AoTC than TFA.

To see something different than Star Wars/Empire/Jedi. TFA is not different so there is no point watching it when you can watch the better originals.

The prequels, as awful as they are, at least have a handful of engaging characters and some drama around them. The Force Awakens lacks any real emotional tie to the protagonists. They're just kinda vanilla, and in some cases, rather annoying. And their adventures are nearly devoid of any perils that might make the audience empathize with them. They just sorta bounce from gunfight to gunfight, stumbling across plot devices (Millennium Falcon, Luke's Lightsaber etc).

On the contrary, even as juvenile and often poorly constructed as they are, the audience watches the characters in the prequels embark on their respective arcs. George Lucas may have not been as great a visionary or writer as we had once believed, but he understood story structure.

I mean, personally, I don't agree. For me the prequels are much worse, because of the irreparable damage they did to characters and stories from the original trilogy, and that makes them unwatchable. I mean, in A New Hope, when Obi Wan talks about "the Clone Wars", it's this magical, awesome sounding thing. Whoa. What were the clones? Why was there a war over them? Oh. So the Clone Wars actually had nothing to do with the clones at all, aside from them being one of the armies involved? Well, that's kinda lame. Darth Vader, the most epic bad guy in science fiction history... is a whiny teenager who didn't think he was getting respected enough by the Jedi Council, and turns to the dark side because he has a vision of his girlfriend dying in childbirth.

TFA, for all its bland, forgettable vanilla-ness, doesn't do any damage to the original trilogy. It just exists in its own uninteresting space.

I don't think I will watch TFA as often as I do the prequels or the OT. Compared to the rest, TFA seems more shallow and has less visual appeal. It's just not as good as a piece of cinema.

TFA is about ... hahaha ... hope.

TFA has its faults but it sets up the reboot with really high expectations storywise.

TFA sets up a number of very intriguing storylines. Did anyone really like Luke at the end of ANH? It's not until Empire and his training with Yoda (am I spoiling something here?) that he becomes someone for whom you invest some feelings. Same goes for Rey, and look who she finds at the end of TFA. Where is General Leia going to fit in in Episode VIII? The son and daughter of Vader are alive and kicking, and Rey is going to be trained by her Jedi uncle.

Personally, my biggest gripe was the idea that a Death Planet was anywhere near more dangerous and less vulnerable than a Death Star. And Kylo Ren needs to man up as a villain.

I thought it was very weak. Its more of a joke than hope, rehashed memories and absolutely terrible plot only enhanced with lovable cameos and somewhat competent acting.

Kylo's definitely related to Anakin, even the terrible whiny ***** attitude. He's even worse than Caedus, the character they knocked off.

For me, "The Trilogy" now means, Rogue One, A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, with Return of the Jedi being a decent Epilogue. I cannot choose a favorite out of the three. I objectively rank IV a little lower than the other two for some silly kinks in the directing style that were worked out by replacing Lucas with Kershner on V. But the spirit of that movie is foundationally epic, and I love as much as the other two.

I stand by these rankings:

I F
II D+
III C+ Gets a better grade that I and II almost solely on the basis of "So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause."

R1 A+
IV A
V A+
VI B Would have been an A without the murder-bears, and "from a certain point of view" retcon BS. My major gripe with ROTJ is how it (badly) re-contextualizes earlier material. It stands on it's own pretty well, but it's clear that GL changed directions in his original vision after ESB, and there is plenty of meta-commentary (interviews with Gary Kurtz etc...) that bears this out.

VII B+

The Clone Wars D Just the movie, The series as a whole requires a more complicated review structure and largely comes off much better.
Holiday Special G Because, yes, we need a grade level worse than "F" to accurately describe the level of anti-competence involved in generating this poo-stain.
Caravan of Courage F The after-school special of the Star Wars galaxy.
Battle For Endor B- Surprisingly not a disaster, but It's been more than a few years since my last viewing, this would likely go down if I saw it again.

Clone Wars, The Clone Wars, and Rebels not included because apples and oranges.

Or my top 10 order:

1) ESB, R1

2)

3) ANH

4) TFA

5) ROTJ

6) Battle For Endor

7) ROTS

8) Vindictive Divorce

9) Castration

10) The Clone Wars

11) TPM, AOTC, Holiday Special

having just finished a peter cushing hammer horror binge, and cheap whiskey... My judgement may be skewed.

1- Turkish Star Wars

2- Caravan of Courage

3- Holiday special

4- Return of the Jedi

5- Empire stikes back

6- Rogue One

7- New Hope

8- That commercial for C-3po`s cereal

9- American graffiti

10- Wrath of Khan

The Empire Strikes back is unbeatable, but right after it is Revenge of The Sith, for me.

Honestly not sure what's in my #3 slot. It isn't Episode I or II, but it's not RoTJ either.

Empire, as a complete movie.

But the emperors throne room in Return is amazing.

When Luke finally gives in to his anger and strikes his father down...The glow in his eyes in that very scene as he is towering over a crippled Vader...Man it gives me goosebumps every time I see it.

TFA, for all its bland, forgettable vanilla-ness, doesn't do any damage to the original trilogy. It just exists in its own uninteresting space.

Oh, but it does, doesn't it?

Since the events of Return of the Jedi, Luke goes from the being savior of the galaxy and last surviving Jedi Knight to a failure and self-exiled hermit, R2D2 shuts himself down for a couple of decades in sadness, the epic love story that was Han and Leia drifts apart, and the First Order rises from the ashes of the Empire, somehow surpassing it by creating a superweapon more powerful and destructive than any that came before it, wiping out the New Republic fleet and an entire solar system in the process, in a single blow negating all of our heroes actions in the original trilogy and the Rebel Alliance's desperate final hour victory at Endor.

And NO ONE has an effing clue where Lando is.

1. Empire Strikes Back

2. A New Hope

3. Rogue One

4. Return Of The Jedi

That's it. As far as I'm concerned, there are no other Star Wars films.

This. ^

Holiday Special

Jedi the ewoks don't spoil it for me.

Well.

Old versus new isn't it ?

There is one thing the Original films have over the new ones.....

The look, the feel that slightly grainy 35mm film stock picture quality, and more importantly story and plot over effects.

Yes, Star Wars is loved for its special effects, ground breaking in its day.

But, these days....They can do absolutely anything.

And that can be the problem.

Compare a New Hope to Force awakens.

Beautiful Cinematography and Art direction on a tight budget and everyone winging it on A new Hope.

Then you get Force Awakens.... Dazzling light show with odd plot New Hope rehash and a lot of over acting.

"Sorry if I offended anyone !"

New films in general seem to struggle where 30-40 years ago all you had was the story, the plot and relying on Actors to bring your vision to life.

What Lucas did was....Superb.

And inspiring to nearly every film maker that followed.

Take Blade Runner.

Still Amazing now, some of the best Cinematography ever put on Celluloid.

Fantastic story and plot.

And told in Harsh Future on a tight Budget relying on the special effects to carry it along.

And no CGI in sight.

Amongst all the razzle and dazzle, flash and bangs of the modern effects riddeld films.....The look and feel and story sometimes gets lost.

A New Hope.

That's the best of the Star Wars Films.

When Luke stands there looking at the twin Suns, Hoping for something Better.

And John Williams Music is carrying the scene along.....Doesn't it make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

There is something Magical about that first Film.

The one that started it all.

Not many films these days can get even close to that.

Rogue One was very Good.

It had that "feel" of the original trilogy.

Lucas got it right 77.

Empire and Jedi are almost as good.

They complement the best.

A New Hope.

All the best,

Barry.

DAT!!!

Empire is clearly still the best in my opinion. A New Hope is the first movie I ever saw at the theatre, in 1977, when I was 6 years old. It had a huge impact (to say the least) and will always be very special. It started it all. Rogue One is amazing on many levels, but even though it can stand on its own as a great sci-fi war movie, it really needs all the context we've known for years, from the other movies, to truly be as epic as it is.

This sums up perfectly what I most likely would've inadequately said.

And yes, I was 6 as well when I first saw ANH in the theatre, and that movie - this franchise - this colossal world that is Star Wars immersed me from the first moments of the very first film. It trumps Empire - for me - just the slightest for that very reason.

I think I have to say that it's still A New Hope. But Empire Strikes Back is right up there too, but I like them for different reasons and in the end I have to hand it to the amazing engagement curve that A New Hope provides.

1) Empire Strikes Back - Duh! The Battle of Hoth, to the Space Slug, to Yoda, to Bespin. Just an awesome story.

2) A New Hope- It started it all. Thus far, it still has the greatest "rewatch value" of all the Star Wars films. It is just an all around fun film to watch. Something about it just drills into my head. I blame Joseph Campbell. If I feel like watching a single Star Wars film, it is usually ANH that gets put on. Empire is a better film, but A New Hope is a more "fun" film.

3) A Force Awakens -Flawed, but I barely inch it above RoJ. Rey is my favorite character so far in the Star Wars movies. And Yes, I still believe Rey is a "Mary-Sue", however, Daisy Ridley brings so much charisma that I don't care. (She really should have lost the lightsaber duel at the end and get separated from Kylo, it would have been amazing story-telling. Her handing back to Luke a shattered lightsaber hilt?!? Such a missed opportunity.)

4) Return of the Jedi - Love it, it has everything you can want in a Star Wars movie.

5) Revenge of the Sith - Kind of forgettable. I only really remember the climax. But it does introduce the ARC-170!

6) A Phantom Menace - Still the best lightsaber battle I have seen, I almost placed it above RoS because of it. It has the greatest rewatch value of the prequels despite its Jar Jar Lloyd-ness. Anakin is a "Gary-Stu" in this, because of this, it detracts largely from the story. Poor Jake Lloyd did not have the acting chops to make his character likable. Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul really shine in the prequels. Up until the Force Awakens, Qui-Gon had my vote for favorite character. There are hints of the Old Star Wars in there, but it was the Starting of the Prequels ...

7) Attack of the Clones - Just Boring.

???) Rogue One -I am still waiting to see it.

4,5,R1,7,6,3,2, (1 straight up was garbage).

4: trench run was the best!

5: Luke Vader saber duel was the best! Hoth ground battle was the best!

R1: Battle of Scarrif (above and on ground) was the best! Vader murder rampage was the best!

7: Rey Finn falcon flying was the best! Rey/Finn/Kylo saber battle was pretty dope too.

6: ok now here things start to slip a bit. Luke Vader saber duel 2 was good. Not as good as 5 but good.

3: I really liked seeing Anakin get sliced up and burned. My son pointed out that his wiener was also probably burned off. Ha-Ha! Take that you loser!

2) the clones landing in the middle of the stupid bug people thunder dome scene was kinda cool.

1) I will always and forever hate Lucas for this dreck. I stood in line for HOURS to go to premiere. I really hate Lucas.
