Venting on the state of armada

THIS JUST IN!

ARMADA....DEAD!

Ben Necromancy incoming.

Film at 11!

Ben? That wizard's just a crazy old man. Now, tomorrow I want you to take that film to Anchorhead and have it erased. That'll be the end of it. Armada belongs to us now.

After reading 12 pages, here is what I can say about Armada.

There is no uber-meta, no autowin button, and no point-and-click builds in armada.

Moreso than any tactical miniature war-game I have played, aside from perhaps chess; this is true:

If you are dumb, you will not do well at Armada. If you can't problem-solve, out think your opponent, see the "flow" of the battle, you will not win Armada. Period. Hot dice (and/or cold dice), having a winning net-list will not help you. Sure, the problem may be your list..if you did some dumb stuff; yes there are a few truly bad upgrade cards; yes the Vic is still a bit lacking. More than likely, though, it's you. Yes, you can lose Armada in the deployment phase. I have lost Armada in deployment; I have never lost because of what I brought vis a vis what my opponent brought. I simply failed to think and adapt. Every decision you make is important in this game. You can lose because you chose the wrong objective card, or decided to go first when you should have gone second. It is not a forgiving game; that's what makes it great. If you really hate that, this may not be the right game for you, as others have said. Many of the guys have been around since day 1, myself included, and who have lived and played through every wave and every meta seem to agree that the game is in a GREAT state right now. That should tell you something.

I'll end with a quote from GlennGarry Glen Ross:

You got ships. FFG paid good money. Get their names to FLY them. You can't fly the ships you're given, you can't fly ****, you are ****, hit the bricks pal, and beat it, 'cause you are going out.

Do you know what it takes to fly an MC30? Do you know what it takes? It takes brass balls to fly an MC30.

I'm inclined to agree that the game is problematic right now. I have two specific issues. It should be said that I'm not coming from X-Wing. I've played a grand total of maybe five games of X-Wing. It's a good game, but it's a completely different game. X-Wing is tactically reactive from turn to turn. Armada isn't.

#1 - The game can frequently be decided after the list building and deployment steps. What I mean here is that if you have a bad list or a bad deployment... you're not going to win versus a good list/good deployment MOST of the time. Skill is not really the equalizer that it is in many games. It's not like a skillful player can make a Victory-class Star Destroyer fly faster if he deployed it a bit too far out. There is no coming back from certain mistakes and it feels like you hit a point where you know you've lost, but you have to play the loss out in slow motion to try to mitigate the damage and get a better score.

#2 - Squadrons seem weirdly unbalanced. It seems crazy that the majority of ships in the game CAN'T kill a Decimator, even with perfectly lined up shots and all hits all game long. A few of the ships that have two anti-squadron dice CAN kill certain squadrons over the course of a game, but only with good rolls and at the expense of shooting at other ships. I feel like the only reason a player wouldn't take all squadrons is the hard limit on squadron points and the loss condition of having no ships.

Handling these in reverse order:

You are 100% correct on the squadrons being too durable compared to ships. The damage output of ships vs squadrons is too inconsistent to be a significant threat vs most squadrons, and the ones where it is sufficient is because the squadrons are too fragile to any damage, not the other way around.

The game has thankfully moved to a point where deployment mistakes are far more forgiving now, largely due to the significant increase in ship maneuverability (not necessarily speed). This has allowed ships to more rapidly turn towards locations where the action is taking place even without maneuver commands. That said, the limited turn number makes deploying to take advantage of objective play much more effective than it is in X-Wing.

What I love about Armada is that there is always a perfect counter for any fleet you design. Big ships only? Bomber runs! Fighter-heavy? AF MSU or interceptor raids! MSU? Bring in all the ISDs! I just love it how balanced all those lists can be :)

So, I really tried to stay out of this thread because it's just AdmiralNelson 2.0 and that got way too messy.

I'll start by saying that Armada is clearly not dead, in fact it's doing pretty well. That said, quite a few of Armadas biggest supporters on this thread have mentioned that it's dead in their community, it's dead in mine as well.

I bring this up because whether or not the OP was a troll is irrelevant, in-between the drama in his posts were legitimate grievances. Yet, whenever someone decides to criticize Armada on these forums they are immediately shut down, as a result people researching this game primarily see petty disputes and may decide they don't want to invest in this game. Thereby reducing interest and local communities.

Some advice to those defenders, rather than deviate to discussions of how annoying people named Ben are (I get it, I knew a Ben and he was REALLY annoying so I'm left to conclude they all are) just answer the questions/concerns, offer advice, and should that fail, STOP POSTING AND FEEDING THE TROLL!!!!!

We all want a successful game, the more successful, the better the support from FFG, and perhaps those dead communities will revive.

This thread should be called "my womanly parts hurt because of the state of Armada" If Ben is smart enough to ruin the game for you that means he beat you on the table and in your head. Pack your bags, go home and wash the sand out of your craw. Other wise man up, and beat him at his own game. Part of strategy and tatics is the head game. I've lost to and beat Ben. I promise he is human. Stop whining.

Just come to the SA regionals and beat Ben!

See I actually play this game. You sold all your stuff. So... just leave already. You're only trolling now.

*sigh* I can't believe this thread is still happening

Damnit Ben! Let it die!!!

As someone who knows and regularly plays Ben, this whole thing is super funny to read, because it's an obvious case of sour grapes with extra salt.

Ben is a good player who you guys know on here. I'd be frustrated too if I weren't very good and had to play Ben all the time.

You must the guy from Killeen.

No, I'm the ghost of Obi Wan Kenobi. No one can hear me but you. They all think you're talking to yourself.

I heard you but I still think the OP is talking to himself. This venting is kind of all over the place. Maybe it is my age. Maybe my recent head trauma. Either way I really have no idea what the point of this is. But that's cool. I did get grapes were involved, Ben did it, and a troll is being fed. Sigh. Beyond that? Beats me!
