Well Howdy! Figured Y'all could answer my question

By Mackaywarrior, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So normally I am an X-Wing guy. Been busy painting my custom X-Wing models and ran into an issue. I don't know how I want to paint my A-Wing and Y-Wing I use.

What is the market like for private citizens in the Star Wars Universe?

Is it relatively common to see civilians flying A-Wings and Y-Wings?

Any creative paint schemes you can think of that are still thematic?

Those are pretty militaristic craft, so I think you’d be unlikely to see many of them in private hands.

Maybe about as many of them in private hands as you saw front-line WW-II fighters/bombers in private hands during the 50s. Or front-line modern fighters/bombers in private hands today.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Luke had his X-Wing but he was a Rebel Pilot.

Luke had an X-wing issued to him, but it wasn't his own private property. The Alliance could have reclaimed it and issued it to someone else (or had it cannibalized for parts) at any time if they saw fit to do so.

Do you mean what types of paint to use on the models? Use any hobby paint available from your FLGS. Personally, I use Reaper and Vallejo as they have dropper bottles. You also want to use a primer, either brush on or spray and a sealer again either brush on or spray.

While it is theoretically possible for a citizen to get one, it will cost a lot (in R1, the bounty being offered for the Imperial Defector was like 600 credits or something low like that). Assuming they could afford one, it would draw a ton of Imperial Scrutiny. And they would likely not be allowed to have the ships armed (especially with Proton Torps). This is assuming they buy it on the legal market. It would be possible to buy them on the black market, but then they would likely not be able to land at regular star ports.

While I doubt we would see many Milatary ships in civilian hands custom paint jobs should not be ruled out.

1. Craft owned by the resistance can have customisation in canon, see Poe and his black T70. No reason you could not do a whole Squadron themed around custom paints, like the prussians had in WW1.

2. Bounty Hunters and smugglers do have armed craft. Now these are generally Lrg based ships but no reason you could not write a background that Warden 3 is actually a BH currently working for the rebellion with their own private K-wing.

in the Empire however I would keep things more uniform, having whole squadrons being a single scheme.

With the notable exception of Aces. It is common for an Ace to customize their paint, while remaining in the general scheme (such as adding a stripe).

You thought about looking at the slatcards for the Scum Z-95 Headhunters? They're almost an exact copy of the X-Wing (bar the S-Foils), and some of them look rather nice.

EotE has an interesting assumption.

Y-Wings are readily available to civilians. They are considered obsolete, so the Empire doesn't employ them, but they are available and for sale in EotE.

And for commercial use, Y-Wings are actually a very good option to escort bulk freighters. And with their Ion cannons, they're awesome for encounters that require 'non-lethal' force.

Also, look up Nar Shaddaa. ANYTHING is available on Nar Shaddaa, for the right price.

Anything!

Want a Tie Defender two years before it hits the concept phase? Look on Nar Shaddaa!

Thanks everyone!

The squadron I like to fly has 2 X-Wings, an A-Wing, and a Y-Wing. With Biggs and Wedge as pilots for the X-Wings I have some standard painted X-Wings with the tail marking for Red 2 and Red 3. Sometimes I also use some X-Wings with the paint scheme Wedge and Gavin used in the X-Wig Book: The Bacta Wars.

Since those two highly personalized fighters look a little odd next to standard rebel colors I wanted to make custom As and Ys. Just wanted to keep it thematic. I personally prefer to fly a fighter I can easily imagine in the Star Wars universe.

I don't know how long civilians have been flying P-51 Mustangs at airshows, but it's been a while now, and those are still some badass planes. The Star Wars galaxy is also a violent place, full of pirates and bounty hunters. People walk around with pistols openly on their hips, and most starships are armed. So yeah, I think it's fine to have "obsolete" military hardware in the hands of civilians. I'm sure there are freelance squadrons that provide escort service (not that kind) for cargo ships through dangerous sectors.

Now, things should change a bit in certain places. Bringing a Y-Wing to Tatooine is no big deal, but I imagine Coruscant has thousands of orbital customs and security stations. I might rule that you need special clearance to land anything on the surface, and most personal ships have to dock at a station, where their ship will be heavily inspected, while the passengers take a shuttle to the surface.

Yeah, just remember you're going to have serious issues w/ the local law enforcement and the Imps in the Inner and Middle Sectors unlike the no-man's-land that is the Outer Rim and Unexplored Space where anything goes (except for what few outposts where the Imps have locked down and/or are doing a major Offensive/Colonization Push/Campaign as Thrawn used to do before the de-canonization of the EU).
