Battlescribe...

By Darth Lupine, in Star Wars: Armada

I maintain the X-Wing Battlescribe files and I've helped out in the past with little tweaks to the Armada files. If this stuff doesn't get updated by the regular folks by this weekend, I'll update everything myself.

As far as updating from 1.X to BS2, there's not much I can say other than that I think the upgrade is great. The functionality of BS2 is much improved (especially for those of us who create/maintain files) and I don't think the ads are too bad in the free mobile version. 1.X will crash if you try to use BS2 files and there's no helping it. If you're absolutely refusing to upgrade, you can use the old files but they won't be updated as new content is released.

Thanks Lucky.

This solved my issue. I was unaware of the new app that needed to be installed. I checked for updates to the 1.x version several times, but never thought to look for a new app altogether.

Alright, the three-day weekend is over. I'll take care of this Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm also going to re-jigger how squadrons display so X-Wings are grouped together, as are Y-Wings, as are A-Wings, etc, rather than just grouping all the named squadron pilots in an alphabetical jumble.

Thank you, I know just about nothing about programing, but if you just put

X-Wing: Basic

X-Wing: Luke

X-Wing: Wedge

or something like that, would that not sort them?

Any updating is appreciated,

I am a Battlescribe user and fan!

Thanks again!

It's a little more complicated than that, in part because we wanted to reduce the clutter on the main menu (on the left on the desktop version). At this point in the game, each faction has 33 different squadron cards representing 12 different types of squadrons, and that list is only going to get longer as more cards are released in future waves. 33 choices is already a lot from the main squadron menu.

What I'm doing is cutting that menu from 33 choices to 12. When I'm done, what will happen is if you want any A-Wings in your list, you'll pick A-Wing from the main squadron menu and you'll get a sub-menu letting you select any number of the generic "A-Wing Squadron" plus checkboxes allowing you to select singletons of "•Green Squadron", "•Shara Bey", and "•Tycho Celchu". It results in a much less ponderous menu and a cleaner display in the Roster View.

I had actually already started exploring different ways to organize the squadrons when I noticed this thread. This just prompted me to run this by the other team members and get motivated to do it. Because I've had to individually adjust the squadron information for each squadron as part of this, manually adding the handful of missing squadrons while I'm at it has been trivial.

In any event, I'm about 70% done on my end but I'm quitting for the night. I'll finish everything tomorrow, upload the data, and you can all see what you think.

Just updated to new version of Battlescribe. The new ships are in there, but looks like most/all of the Wave 5 squadrons are missing (e.g. E-Wings). Are there any other offline apps available?

Nothing else offline really. All the new squadrons and objectives will be on BattleScribe by tomorrow.

Please don't forget to add in Dual Turbolaser Turrets as a modification and Flechette Torpedoes, since those are missing. Same with Rapid Launch Bays!

:D

Thank you, the work you do is very much appreciated!

Will do.

I trust your expertise, as I have none when it comes to most things to do with computers. Also your system does sound much better then mine.

And it's done. It usually takes four hours or so for the data to go live on http://battlescribedata.appspot.com/ after an update is uploaded. If you update your data in the morning (after about 8:00am Eastern/5:00am Pacific), you should be good to go.

The good news:

I got a lot accomplished. All the missing content (Upgrades, Objectives, Squadrons) from Wave 5 and the Corellian Conflict should be in place. If I missed an Upgrade card or something, let me know.

I reorganized the Squadrons as intended and they are much cleaner. They are a little different than you might be used to but I adjusted pretty quick and the menus are a lot cleaner.

If you select the Station Assault Objective, the roster view will give you the profile for the Unarmed Station.

Modifications will now be tagged as a Modification once you select them so you won't be wondering where a bunch of other options went on the menus (at least on desktop).

Objectives have been updated based on the available fields (Previously the templates didn't like some objectives having "End of Round" conditions while others had "End of Game" conditions).

Ships that can take more than one upgrade of a single type now pick both from the same list, rather than having to select each from separate lists. This also helps the rosters validate the rule that a ship may not have more than one copy of any given upgrade (which it wasn't really enforcing before).

Lots of templating and standardizing to try to get formatting of profiles consistent.

Lots of behind the scenes organizational stuff that will make the files easier to update in the future when new content is released (but things that are probably invisible to users).

Probably more things I've since lost track of.

The bad news:

Because I had to reorganize so much stuff, you'll probably get an error when you open an old roster warning you that things are missing. Some of the squadrons, objectives, or (a few) upgrades might unselect from your old lists (because your saved lists can't find them now that they are reorganized in the new files). It sucks, but hopefully it isn't too tough to reselect things. Your lists won't be completely erased, they'll just have a few gaps that you'll have to add back in. The files are really clean and stable at this point - I went over everything thoroughly and I can't imagine anything else that would need a comparable level of reorganization in the long haul. That is to say, I'm sorry if some old lists need to be fixed a bit on the user end, but I can't see anything else on the catalogue end that might break lists like this again in the future. Sorry for the trouble but this structure should be much nicer both for users and those of us maintaining the catalogues (which will facilitate quicker updates for future waves).

Thanks Dr Lucky, really appreciate this :)

Although I've come to really enjoy Armada Warlords, there really isn't anything quite as convenient as Battlescribe for mobile list building.

Thanks a bunch for your help!

Love, love, love the new format! Thanks for all the hard work.

I found the first bug, though. The generic HWK-290 has no cost :)

Just downloaded the new data and it's missing all named squadrons and none of the generics listed have point values.

Add them to your roster and then click on the individual squadrons. You add generics and named in a second layer so that all of the squadron types are grouped together. Took me a minute too, but I'm really digging the layout now.

Thanks for the tip! And thank you Dr. Lucky!

The new files are fantastic, thank you very much Dr. Lucky!

Oops! That's what I get for pushing through all this stuff so quickly. I've fixed that now and pushed the release. Update again in a few hours and that will be sorted.

I'm glad you're liking the way the files work. I'm pretty happy with the update overall.

I know it's a change from what people are used to but I hope people get used to the new display pretty quickly. It's completely intuitive on desktop but I can see how people get this impression on first blush on mobile. I see below you've got it sorted though, so excellent.

I thought really hard about having it add one generic by default when you selected a ship (which would keep that parent menu from displaying "No cost" for everything), but ultimately I didn't want users to have to unselect something every time they only wanted a named squadron.

Very cool, thanks for the full update, much appreciated!!!

Thanks for this, but something is wonky....points not working up like before. Hmm, I'll check better when I get home.

If you want generic squadrons you have to go into each squadron selection and select how many generics you want or else the points will be 0.

(Which is not a bug and works great but Is a new mechanic.)

I noticed yesterday, and did not check again today, that the Arkitten has a weird option for multiple defensive retrofits. Which is probably a bug, but doesn't really hurt anything since you should only select 1 defensive retrofit upgrade. It does look odd, esp if you do not understand that format (for multiple upgrades of the same type.)

I only built two fleets and then re-flushed them out with the new update, and the points worked perfectly.
