New player - First "competitive" squad recommendations

By Armin, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hello!

I'm completly new to X-wing, bought my red core-box just today. Despite of this fact, I'm aiming to participate in a local gaming event at the end of January.

I'm asking your advice regarding a starter squad, which is relativly easy to fly (as a new player), fun and still somehow competitive.

I read a lot of posts, articles and watched a couple of podcasts, but the more I read/watched, the more confused I get. :)

I like the Kihraxz Fighter model, so any advice on using them is more than welcome. :)

Thanks,

Armin

What faction do you want to play? Big ships or small ships? As a new player, I would stay around 2-3 ship builds.

Easiest competitive list to pick up, IMHO: (2) k-wings (1) y-wing all with TLT's. Use Miranda, Esege, and a gold; fill remainder of points to taste based on what you have available. You can run this with just $45 typically, maybe less if you buy expansions on-line. If any one has a recon specialist you can borrow, that fits great on Esege

I mean, someone should tell him about quad Y-Wing TLT.......

LOL, I am aware, but requires buying 6 ships, and Miranda can make for a tough end game fight!! and Esege with RecSpec gives more consistency to the three TLT shots.

My competitive advice on using the K Fighter is don't. :P

Don't get me wrong, it's a fun ship, and with the right build, it can do a lot of work. But the problem is that it takes a lot to get them there. Talonbane with Mindlink (or PtL for independent flying), Vectored Thrusters, and Cloaking Device comes in at 33-35 points. It isn't nearly as maneuverable as Fenn Rau in a similarly priced ship, and dies quicker with its 2 agility as opposed to the 3 on the protectorate (because the protectorate also benefits from Autothrusters and is title).

I'm not saying it can't be done, just that competitively speaking, the K Fighter doesn't bring enough to the fight to justify its point cost. Overcoming that takes practice and experience. (On a side note, you would need to get 4 separate packs to outfit that K Fighter, so not really cost effective in that sense either.)

The squads suggested above allow you to fly fairly freely, incorporate some great mechanics to learn, and reduce the expense you would occur to be able to fly them.

An easy list that I wouldn't call "awful" is just 5 naked K-Fighters. Do you love the model THAT much? Some lists in this meta can't handle that many ships firing at them, and it can catch them off guard. But I guess it depends if your local meta is super heavy 2-3 ship lists or not.

Thank you guys for the advices!

I really like the idea of starting with 2 K-wings and 1 Y-wing. I will get them tomorrow. Later on, I will have still the chance to extend it up to 4 Y-wings.

Realize, that no matter the list, get some practice flying it. You are going to want to try and keep them relatively close to cover/focus fire. Miranda can roll a 4 dice PWT if you have shields left and get Rng1. Or dump a die on one of your TLT's to regen a shield. Late game with her, you build shields back up if you can (occasional slam to keep rng3) hold TL for a turn you can get rng1 with PWT and burn a shield for full modded 4-dice: This is a 1v1 technique to push the damage to kill an ace by solo

Since 2 Z's come in the box, why not run KKZZY for starters? if you do the lowest cost pilots and put a TLT on the Y, you still have 12 points to fill in as needed, or another Z! IF you have a bunch of generics and one Y with TLT, I would run the Y a little behind the rest.

I have played today my first games in X-Wing. Used the follwing list in four games:

Miranda, TLT - 35pts

Esege, TLT, Recon Spec. - 37pts

Gold Sqd. Pilot, TLT, R2D2 - 28pts

2 wins and 2 losses are the results on the training games.

What was OK:

- I did not finished my movement on asteroids or ships. (my target for the first game day :) )

- TLTs were used in almost every turn, except the very first ones.

- Miranda's shield burning - extra die was very helpful in putting some heavy damage / crit to enemy ships coming range 1.

My observations on what was not OK:

- I was only able to use R2D2 once, so I'm heavily considering it's replacement.

- Recon spec. on Esege was also not a great help during the fights.

It is very likely, that I do not really understand how to use R2D2 and the Recon Spec. card on Esege, so any comments/advices on their usage or any replacement ideas are welcome. (At the moment I have the red core box, 2 K-wing boxes, 1 Y-Wing in my inventory)

R2D2 on a Y Wing is usually not seen to much. Regen is usually a tactic for more maneuverable ships, and the Y Wing doesn't fit into that category.

That being said, have you considered using the R5-X3 that comes in the TFA core set? It's a nifty little upgrade that kind of goes against what you were saying about avoiding asteroids, in that it allows you for one turn to ignore obstacles. This is amazing in that most people haven't seen the upgrade for a while if at all, so when your Y Wing is running in a precarious position of landing on an asteroid, then you pop that little Astromech and deliberately fly onto the asteroid, you will likely find them out of position and you enjoying more TLT love that turn.

And now I've just read you have the core set, not TFA. Hmm... Maybe you could just use R2 Astromech from the Y Wing expansion. More green maneuvers is not a bad thing. Otherwise, just go with a naked Y Wing with TLT and put the points elsewhere.

Recon Spec with Esege just works nicely with her ability to allow allies to use her focus tokens. If you aren't SLAMing that turn, you should be focusing, and getting two tokens for your trouble. Then your teammates can us them if they are in range and need them. If you're not flying close enough together for the range to work, then maybe you can look at changing it. Maybe some bombing plus Advanced SLAM action on Miranda. You might want to wait on that though, as good bombing is a skill that comes from learning good flying first.

You could try R3-A2 if you have it or can borrow it, Otherwise Shield or hull on one ship
