The Thing in the Woods (fanmade) Ready to Print and Play

By lmartin91, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

After about 40-50 hours work and several playtest sessions from Noaloha, I'm glad to present the pdf's, rules and map for this scenario that I designed from the Dunwich Horror. I pulled actual narrative from the story and added additional flavor text to insert the investigators into the story.

Please post game sessions and feedback in this thread after you've had a chance to play it.

Are these the fanmade expansions noaloha reviewed on YouTube?

Those weren't exactly reviews, more like unedited commentary to demonstrate me bumping up against the first draft version and seeing what immediately stood out. :)

The videos are linked directly in a BGG thread for the scenario (anyone can watch them if they have the direct links there), but I have the videos marked as unlisted so they don't show up on the channel. I do intend to do a 'proper' playthrough of this finalised version and list that publicly. Probably some time over the next week or two.

There was a slight problem with 2 of the pdf's uploading. I'm fixing it now.

Ok, fixed. Didn't take as long as I thought it would.

Great work! I'm away for a few days now, but when I get back, and have time to go to a print shop, this is definitely happening! Did you get a scan done of the backs of the cards? A sheet with 8 Encounter cards and 1 player card back would be really handy for the ratio in this set!

Thanks for all your hard work, and for sharing with the community!

I added a 9 page encounter back. There aren't any cards that are added to your deck, so there aren't any investigator deck backs. Although, I think other people are printing out the fronts and sleeving them in with core game cards for the backs. That could save you some ink.

You, sir, are a star.

Just a couple of questions.

Is this a stand alone scenario or can you play it between normal scenarios? If so how big is the XP cost to play this?

How much XP investigators shouls have before playing this scenario, or is it mean to be played with completely new investigators with no XP?

I simply designed it has a standalone scenario. It is a bit difficult but not unwinnable with a starting deck of cards but feel free to bump up to some higher cards if you like.

Thanks!

Also one suggestion. Some scenario makers use the scenario difficulty template for the scenario rules. It would definitely look better than pure text sheet!

Here is a link to scenario that use that method. http://crikeymiles.com/games/others/TheCollector_PrintAndPlay.pdf

You would have to use a couple of cards to fit all the rules in, but it definitely would look better and be easier to carry with the other cards!

Other alternative would be to make an separate template for the rules, but that card size difficulty template is just fine for that task!

One other thing is that there should be 2 Wail of the Whipporwhils in the deck according the rules, but only one in the PDF... An error in the rules text?

ps. I did start this conversation in the boardgamegeek:

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/24671509#24671509

I did some estimations, but I hope that you comment on those. But I supose that they are quite near the goal.

Do I assume correctly the other thing in my evaluation of The Thing in the Woods scenario? It is in the spoiler part of the evaluation.

@hannibal - hey sorry, I've been away for a few days. I'll have a look at your thread over at BGG today and comment there but at first glance, it looks about right.

have you had a chance to play it yet?
There is one card that could possibly be added to your deck and that is the banishing tome. If you get a chance, have a look at that card and let me know what you think.

UPdated pdf pg11 - which now has the missing whipporwhills card.

Not yet, but the Banishing tome seems somewhat balanced itself. It is normally very usefull, but can backfire.

Very depended on character who possible gets it.

Have to play with it before saying if it would be usefull in the deck or not... A good thing in this case ;)

Reguires high intelligence to untap and reasonable will to cast it succesfully.

Really though, the comes into play tapped is a part of the story. I could word that differently and put that on the Act card for those instructions, Then I could fit the text in there for how I want the card to work , which is.

Test Willpower (2). Target monster at your location suffers damage for each point you succeeded by. If you succeed by 3 or more greater than the Monster Health, remove that monster from the game instead. If you fail this test, suffer 1 horror for each point you failed by.

I think (2) is a little low for this and maybe (3) would be better. I like the idea of removing nasty monsters so they don't get shuffled back in and come back. And its fitting as it is called the "banishing tome"

This will be my first fan made adventure for this game. Looking forward to it. I'll come back with a review.

I intend to use the stand alone rules for stating experience.

Thank you @Imartin91.

If so the the banishing tome item should not be awarded after the scenario to use in other. It could cause some serious unbalance thing in other scenarios, but inside Yours it is very sound asset. So it may be best to allow it only in the The thing in the Woods and give some XP instead. Maybe investigators sells the tome to Miscatonic university for y XP?

:)

I didn't see 2 Acolyte's in the files. I assume you are just supposed to use the 2 Acolyte's from the core set?

yes

Just played it tonight. Was a lot of fun, I enjoyed it. What is the purpose of the iban gazi powder? Never saw any thing that combined with putting "progress" on the dunwhich horror. Also how do you banish him? Said you could banish or kill him???

The powder of iban-ghazi is worded wrong. I changed the mechanics and the name of the tokens from progress to visible. I thought I had changed all instances of this but looks like I missed this one. The strategy is to use it so the dunwich horror doesn't turn invisible again and start regaining health.

Thanks, I thought it was a lot of fun to play through the dunwitch story, especially right before this new expansion. My wife didn't know the story at all, so it was good for her to learn it:)

Overall, like I said, I loved the scenerio and playing it. One of my favorites. Here is my only suggestion:

It seems to me you could easily split this into a 3 story campaign. You have the 3 main parts, figuring out what is going on, dealing with the true form, then dealing with the dunwitch horror. At parts it kinda felt we were switching focuses too, changing deck (some old cards surged if not applicable anymore), locations, and even advancing act or agenda to match.

@monorico - totally agree with breaking it up into 3 scenarios.

Will definitely give this a try. Just need to use my parents' printer as I'm too cheap to buy my own! Had a quick peek and it's looking great. Many thanks for putting in the time and effort. :) Will report back once I've played!

Feedback appreciated, did anyone get a chance to play it? Without feedback, ambition to create more dwindling.

After a busy holiday season I still have yet to print it all off, but I plan to do that in the next week or so, then it'll just be finding the time to play it. Really looking forward to it!
