Boardwars Winter 2017 Imperial Assault Vassal Tournament - Details

By jacenat, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Awesome! I'm interested!

I can't sign up yet at this point, because I'm not sure what squad I'll be playing. But yes, I do intend to sign up!

And I do hope to get the Vassal mod updated soon. [There's a link to it in my signature here...the module will be version 8.0 when it's ready...it's 7.1 right now]. However, I want to point out that I rely on the skills and expertise of some other members of the community for this project, and so some of the time factors are out of my hands. This is how it works when you've got people working on a project for free in their spare time. :) (One of these fine gentlemen provides excellent scans, and the other has excellent graphical skills that I lack.)

Regardless, right now it looks like the mod won't possibly be completed until at least 2 weeks from now at the earliest. But I'm fairly confident that it'll be ready for the start-date of this tournament (January 30), and I'll do everything I can to meet that deadline.

Looks cool guys, did I miss something with the anchorhead bar switch?

*Edit* ignore me I read the post on board wars again and it says in there *Edit*

Just took a look at the Anchorhead bar. On the crates objective there appears to be a clearly superior start zone.

Rules question: how does Jabba spending VP interact with "Considered to have additional VPs"?

Looking forward to!

I have a Regional on the 14th, so I'll see how my list does then before signing up.

Also, as someone has mentioned in the discord chat, I worry about the 75 min round. I know I play slower online, especially since I'm not that familiar with the vassal version, so a set turn limit of 4-5 would be nicer, IMO. Most tournament games don't last longer than that anyway.

This sounds great! When I get chance, I'll fix up a list and enter it!

Awsome!

Building list right now, what to bring....

Hoping it will go as well as last time.

Sounds fun, do we have he timeframe for he tournaments?

What's the chat name?

I plan to join. Thanks for organizing!

@buckero0 sounds like the timeframe is based on if you're in a US or EU location according to the link up top. Or were you asking about this bit from the linked page:

Registration ends midnight Jan. 22nd 2017 and the tournament will start on Jan. 30th 2017 (provided the Vassal module has been updated by then

Registration ends Jan. 22nd. The tournament starts Jan. 30th.

Each week will be one round of swiss, though players can play faster than that if everyone has completed their scheduled games.

There will be 4-6 swiss rounds (depending on how many players will register).

All of that can also be found in the linked post and the linked tournament rules.

I've only played a little on Vassal (6-7games maybe) and have had a hard time finding people to play. I love tournaments, but was interested in the actual times (which may not be available yet)

Sat. Jan 30th first match at 10am Central time or whatever, next match at 11:30, 12:45, 2:00, 3:30 etc. I'm just trying to see if it will take all day.

I don't have a Boardwars login, do I need that to play?

I second the 5 round limit as opposed to 75min, as I've found it takes longer to play online just making sure everyone is playing the same rules and understanding what's going on.

It's a one game a week like most online tournaments.

even better, that's easier to do

I don't think I've ever played a game to 5 round!

Happy to go with a round limit as three alternative but maybe 4 round is more realistic?

Unless people often find themselves hitting 5 round, I'm happy to go with whatever but my list will likely change based on what is decided

if we're only playing once a week, why not finish the game and not put a time limit or round limit on it. Just go to 40pts?

I was messing around with Anchorhead Bar last night and the map I pulled up didn't have the mission scenarios in place or the tokens, etc like the other maps

It took us a while to put it all together, that may matter if we're all playing that map in a tournament.

I second the "Play to completion". The time limit is only in the rules to keep single day tournaments from taking forever, but if we're only playing one round a week we have the time to do each game right.

I've made a save file with the preset map for one of the missions, will make one for the other mission as well soon, and will make them available when the tournament starts, so that no one need to spend extra time on setting up these.

I'm fine with playing the game it but will definitely change my list as it's a point denial list that often wins at time.

It's cool I'll just adjust :)

Play to completion is not a good idea. Depending on the scenario, this encourages tons of stalling to focus up or draw command cards or other dumb gameplay that has no chance in a real tournament.

Agreed that Play to Completion warps the meta away from what happens in a IRL tournament. Score after 4 rounds seems fair.

A few points:

* thereisnotry kindly did provide save files with the 2 Anchorhead missions. Here, have at it: Mission A and Mission B

* The 75 minute round limit was intended to fit the games into a 90 minute time window. Making time for 90 minutes is much easier than 120 minutes or longer. Changes to cut off after 4 or 5 rounds sounds good too. Will think about it.

I dislike the idea of a hard round limit at all.

Update about the Vassal mod update: It's coming along. I've got a lot of the new stuff into the mod now, and I'm waiting for some further elements in order to move forward. Everything is right on schedule so far!

As for the time limit or round limit question: I would personally like to see this tournament reflect real face-to-face play as much as possible. Therefore yes, i do think there needs to be a time limit. I've played a lot of competitive IA skirmish games, and less than a handful of them have ever gone to time. It's really a matter of learning the game and your squad enough that you can take your turn within a reasonable amount of time. Yes, these things always take longer on Vassal than they do in real life...and that is why we often add 15 minutes to the time limit (we've gone that with IA and also with SWM, back in the day).

But having said my 2 credits-worth, I'll be happy to go with whatever the organizer wants to do, whether that's a time limit or a turn limit, or whatever. It's not like we're playing for $400 promo cards or anything...this is gonna be for fun (with some cool prizes, yes), and so I'm gonna have fun with it, no matter what format it takes.

I dislike the idea of a hard round limit at all.

Maybe bump the round limit to 90 minutes or so.

Man, you guys have a competitive group. Every Vassal game I've played (only 8 or so) has been super casual. I've either been completely new to the program or the other guy has. There is some extra communication that takes place between plays just to clarify what's happening in the game like last game I played, my opponent thought he killed my nexu, I had played Survival Instincts earlier in the round and his Dice roller window was covering the card up on the board. Simple mistake but I had to type Survival Instincts lasts all round, and then move the card around so he could see it. He had to adjust. The wound counter and conditions take a while to cycle through sometimes. Seeing how many spaces a figure moved is sometimes difficult as it's hard to remember exactly where everyone of my figures and his figures are every turn. It just takes longer is all I'm saying, especially since getting practice is hard when players are sparce.

Most of our local tournaments are not super strict on time just because every one seems to have 2+ brand new players (some that have never played skirmish before in their life) and we tend to let them play just to see how fun the game is.
