Hyperspace experiment

By Nginear, in Star Wars: Rebellion

I have only played a few games, but I'm toying with the idea of adding a hyperspace component. Either player takes a leader and hyperspace eligible units from one system, takes the units and the leader off the board for 1-2 turns, writes down the destination but the other player can't see it, and then they are placed during the refresh phase at the destination (which can be anywhere on the board). I'm thinking if they move 4 or less systems away, it takes 1 turn. 5 or more systems and it takes 2 turns "traveling." You would place the paper on the build que to keep track. Obviously you wouldn't use it to move 1 system away - standard movement rules still apply.

I don't get to play as often as I like, or with experienced players, so I likely won't get to test this out too well. But I think it would add an interesting surprise element! The Rebels can move units across the galaxy better and even conduct surprise attacks, and the Imperials can search for the base (it's annoying to drag a fleet down to Endor then get it out again).

What do you guys think?

I think it will unbalance the game severely, make for another bookkeeping step and dedicate a lot of time time to try and figure out where the opponent might go (and deciding on where you might go yourself), in what is already a longish game.

While the idea itself isn't bad, and would be good for a shorter game, just try the following out for yourself:

setup the board in a start position.

Then, place a rebel leader and fleet off to the side and think where you might go. Find that probe card, and one for one of the other systems you considered. Shuffle them and put one on the build queue as the destination (so you don't exactly know where you'll end up).

Now take the Imperial side and see what you can do to counter it.

And take a fleet to one of the major production centers while you're at it.

And that for the entire game.

The thing is, moving between systems already requires a hyperspace jump. It's not unusual for hyperspace jumps to happen in multiple "legs", where you jump to this place, then that place, and make your way to your destination. So thematically you'd have no grounds for this rule, but also you'd really really be messing up the tactics of the game. The Empire would win every time, I think, since it would be so easy to get all the way across the map. 5 systems holy smokes you could go from Coruscant to Mon Cal.
