If a ship with LRS wants to target a section of a huge ship, and that section is Range 3 or beyond, but the closest point of the ship is within range 1-2, can the LRS ship still TL the Range 3 section?
Long Range Sensors and Huge Ship Sections
EDIT : My opinion has been changed, you can acquire a target lock as long as that section is at Range 3 or beyond (even if the other section at Range 1-2).
Original post :
You can acquire target locks on ships at Range 3 and beyond. You cannot acquire target locks on ships at Range 1-2...
A ship that acquires a target lock on a huge ship must acquire that lock on a single section of the huge ship. The closest point of the chosen section must be within range. The red target lock token is placed next to the chosen section of the huge ship and its effect only applies to that section.
The "ship" still being the whole huge ship,
LRS
needs the whole thing at Range 3 or beyond, regardless of which section you're attempting to target lock.

From what you posted from Huge Ship Rules, it appears LRS can target lock the section that is at R3.

It's certainly not rock-solid, and I think the intent is that you can, but nothing explicitly tells LRS to only consider the section.
I submitted a rules question for this, so hopefully we'll have a more satisfactory answer soon (not holding my breath though, my huge ship related questions never seem to get answered).

Effects dealing with epic ships seems to be treated like the proverbial red-haired step stepchild. They are often ignored. Weren't you involved in the discussion on how to treat attacks on epic ships? I think that FFG forgets they put these things on the table.

You've contradicted the rule you've quoted. It would appear from the rule that LRS can lock onto whatever section as long as the closest point of that section is at Range 3 or more.

You and Stoneface have swayed me (for now), though I won't be surprised if others argue.
I was leaning on the side of the TL being legal, glad to know others agree. I tried to find a concrete ruling, and the closest I could find was the quoted line above about measuring to the closest point to the section. The only real evidence against is the description of what a huge ship is, which says something about being one ship with two bases. One ship.
So, wasn't sure. But I think I'll be ruling it by section from now on, since that seems to be the "spirit of the law".
