The old book of lore says search top 3 cards of deck for a card, draw and shuffle
Do you have to name a card and only draw if that card is in the 3 you look at or do you just take one of the 3 that you fancy?
You just take the one you fancy.
It's a very powerful draw effect.
That, and you are safe from drawing your weakness.

I have been playing it as you describe but wasn't sure.
I got the research librarian opening hand in game last night. Got the old book of lore and made rest of game a lot easier

You do have to find a card, so if you see nothing but weaknesses (it's possible in standalone mode, and some scenarios give you extra weaknesses), you'll have to take one of them.
If all three cards on top of your deck are Weaknesses, then you should be grateful that you only had to draw one of them before shuffling your deck.
