Upgrade cards

By Porkchop Express, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My friends and I have been playing the odd casual game of X-wing for a few years but have recently started trying to build more competitive builds as opposed to just playing with any random stuff.

I'm currently researching a few builds, and one in particular(a y-wing turret build) requires a card from the Medium Transport, a card from the Most wanted box set and a card from the K-wing box. Do I need to purchase three of each of these sets if I wanted to run three 3 y-wings in this build? i.e. do I need 3 of the same card, or would one suffice?

For tournaments, yes, if you have three Y-Wings with the BTL-A4 Y-Wing title in your list, you will need three copies of that title.

On the plus side, Most Wanted actually comes with two copies of that card. Likewise, the K-Wing comes with two copies of Twin Laser Turret.

Unfortunately, the only cards in the Rebel Transport Expansion Pack that can be used on a Y-Wing* are all unique , meaning that even if you bought three GR-75s you wouldn't be able to have three stressbots in a list.

*: Well, Flechette Torpedoes, I guess, but there are way cheaper ways to get Flechette Torpedoes.

For Casual play, you can proxy the card as long as your group agrees.

In a tournament, you need the actual cards.

the X-Wing Wikia pages have images of all the cards if you want to use them to print a proxy card or I have seen people use a written slip of paper for their proxy.

As mentioned for tournament play you need actual original of all upgrades you use. If you use three copies of an upgrade then you need three copies of that upgrade.

Moving away from official tournaments you'll find more people who are willing to accept Proxies to some degree. Some go so far as to say "who gives a **** if you actually have the card; just say you do and everything will be fine," although I believe you'd find more people who are ok with using a proxy provided you actually have at least one physical copy of the card. Note that proxy use should be agreed on by both parties as some would still prefer you actually have official cards and can say that if you don't then you should just be experimenting with something else.

If you're actually going for "competitive" builds then you should get the cards. Proxies may be ok to test builds but when it comes to true competitive play you should actually have what you use.

I have the X-wing Squadron builder app that has all the pictures of the upgrade cards. I just play with friends at the moment, so I can get away without multiple cards for now. I can also write lists without all the ships I need.

With all of the stuff out there, it's good to have friends to share cards with when you go to tournaments.

I recently borrowed a Palpatine card for a regional and my buddy borrowed my Jumpmaster ship and cards for the same tournament.

I've even found that there are lots of folks kind enough to loan you cards if you happen to forget something.

Not surprising to see someone panicked over a lost card and have another player step up and loan them what they need.

From my experiences, the X-wing community tends to be supportive and works toward trying to include new players as much as possible.

Make no mistake - they can be cut throat when they play, but I've met a lot of nice people and made a lot of new friends in the short time that I've been playing this game.

I'd dare say that odds are no matter how cut throat someone may be when they play, they are more then likely friendly and easy going when not playing.

Myself I tend to play pretty tightly by the rules, although I try to be personal when playing. But I'd rather beat someone who played the list they wanted and not the list the could manage to put together because they were missing upgrades I wasn't using in the first place.

I hope you mean personable there. Being personal is a little different :P

Maybe.... ;)

So Jimmy, do you like gladiator movies?

Yeah I mean personable, it didn't look right but I was drawing a blank on why it looked wrong.
