Is this worth it to get started with the game? (New Player)

By Franga, in X-Wing

Hi there,

Just have a quick (and maybe stupid) question. Is this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1229635877worth the price to get into the game? Is this an overwhelming amount to get started with? Do I need to buy the new force awakens set to get into the game? Is it better to just start from the beginning with two of the new starter sets?

Sorry for all the questions but really wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on a great deal!

Thanks!

Fraser

A bit too late with the answer I see but not knowing the conversion rates and what things normally sell for in NZ I don't think it is a great deal.

Looking at it you have:

3 old starter boxes. $40?

3 large ship expansions. $30?

1 Aces Expansion. $30

1 bigger small ship expansion. $20

3 small ship expansions. $15

I'd estimate that the RETAIL price of the lot as new ships is around $305 although I know when I buy ships I normally wouldn't bite unless they were 25-33% less than that. While there are some good things about it I do think the lot has some issues and may be overpriced.

In the US I think $300 should be able to get you a pretty darn good start provided you have little help directing it.

You do NOT need the new TFA starter set although it is often a good place to start. Two starter sets is usually nice for the dice and extra templates and while that used to be two of the old starters now we'd usually recommend one of each. Also note that we often recommend picking up the small ship expansions that provide the same ships just because they include things like unique pilots that are not in the core sets.

That listing looks like it's asking for almost full MSRP. I think it's overpriced for what you'd get. And no one really needs four core sets.

Getting into the game via a bulk purchase of someone else's collection can be a very economical way to get started, but that particular example is not one I would choose.

I picked up one of each core set and a few small ships for my son for xmas. That was more than enough to get started. I'd pickup a core set and make sure you like it first, then expand. He played it at a friend's house and wouldn't stop talking about it so I knew it was a sure thing.

They were Xmas specials, but I got both cores for 30.00 total. There's still some great deals out there that I've seen.

TFA Core set & Heroes of the Resistance is the most bare bones I would dare anyone to go. It's Rebel heavy though 2 X-wings & Falcon, but you can get pretty far with a Rey/Finn Falcon + Poe list.
I'd recommend rounding out your Rebel ships with any expansion that includes Astromechs and you should be fine to start.

If you are more Imperial minded, you'll need more expansions (more $$$) since most TIEs & their brethren have minimal shields, if any (except the Defender). TIE FO is a must & I like the TIE Adv. Prototype, & Interceptor. If you go with Interceptors, you'll want the Imp. Aces in short order. If you go Defenders, Imp. Veterans is practically mandatory.

Scum should be something your naturally grow into, after you learn the game. So when you go Scum, the Most Wanted is a good jumping off point as long as you get a Firespray (Slave-1) too. Scum has a lot of shenanigans (which is fun) but beware: the most popular bounty hunters come in Large Ship expansions, so $$$ again. Thankfully Scum has a great variety of small ships, so you don't have to go that route, unless that's your thing.

For me browsing around and to look what to buy next is one of the most fun parts. Personally I would not like to buy a part of an unknown collection. But it is matter of taste

It's a reasonable jumping off point to start a collection, but as others have said; it's rather overpriced.

I'm not 100% sure what the going rate in Australia / NZ is for these products, but it looks very much to me like you would be paying pretty much retail price for that stuff.

At that price you're better off actually buying retail and getting exactly what you want for your collection.

I wouldn't pay anything over 2/3 retail price for a job lot of second hand stuff like that, and even then it would be very much dependent on the contents of the bulk lot.

Long story short; it's not a bad starter kit for a new player, but it is way overpriced for second hand goods.

Ye that's quite a lot of money to drop in one go and to have you hands tied in what you can build from it.

I'd start with either/both core set(s) and have a think about where you want to go from there - at least that willl give you a bit more varierty than 3 of the same core set without so many duplicated cards.

As someone mentioned the heroes of the resistance expansion is a good next purchase if you want to go for rebels as a falcon + a t-65 (normally Rey + Poe) can make a decent 100 point list.

At some point in the not too distant future you will probably find yourself knee deep in x-wing stuff. The last thing you probably want is to be wondering why you have 3 original core sets as well.

The large base ships go for about 50 each Aus, small base are about 23-30. TIES And X's are from the starter so you would need 1 extra ship of each type to get the other pilots for the TIE fighter at least.

Aus/NZ get screwed hard on international items buying off the shelf here. If you are looking to get into the game, go to Book Depository. They have waves 1-6 I think. Might be up to 7, but they offer free shipping no matter how much you buy, plus they have everything marked down. I recently bought an extra Slave 1 from them. Cost me 24 dollars Aus, and free shipping of course. I think Slave 1 goes for about 40-50 normally.

For starters this particular collection would be good.

But hell no at this price. 200-250$ is the maximum for that collection. Here in Poland for equivalent of 350$ you can get between 2 and 3 times that collection.

Hahahahaha

No.

Gotta remember that NZ and OZ get rekt by tariffs on this kind of thing so its probably a good deal.

My rule for eBay is 50% to 2/3 of actual cost maximum for pre-owned minis. I would recommend the same.

He still has to deal with shipping and importing. Which in itself is a debacle I don't bother with, given that its killed my own business.

why? its already in NZ?

They spring a lot of sales on you fairly often.

Got TFA Core for 12.99 b4 Christmas.

Buy it piece by piece. I'm fairly new to X-wing, but don't buy used unless you can touch it with your own hands and examine the quality.

And price it all out, see what it would cost you as new. I know if I was looking to spend $350 up front on ships it'd probably be a lot different list than that

I wish other people would stick to this rule. I regularly see the price of used X-Wing products in the UK version go for more than shops sell them for new. Admittedly those shops start with discounted products as their standard price and free shipping by the time you've added a single large ship to the order. But I've been trying to scour that place for some cheap stuff to build up my missing items and it's just not been happening.

I see this topic gained a little traction.

Unless desperate, which is unlikely, I'd never pay more than MSRP for a new ship. Normally I wouldn't get a ship unless it is 25-33% off MSP ($20 large, $10 small or there abouts) for a new ship which is why that would also be my top end for "used" ships that contain all of their components. If a ship is missing stuff then the price I'm willing to pay will drop even more especially if a model isn't including the ship's dial as that generally makes it useless for play.
