3D Printing & X-Wing

By DangerShine Designs, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

Ahoy hoy,

My lovely wife got me a 3D printer for Christmas and so far I've been having a hoot with it, and was curious what other X-Wing'ers had made (or bought). My printer is a very low-end one (M3D Micro) but is a good starting point at a great price ($280 on a Black Friday deal).

After doing the calibration test-print, I printed a Death Star Turret - a pal and I are building a Death Star trench with rules, and having some props would be awesome and this seemed like a logical starting place. This was done on the lowest quality/fasted print just as a baseline. This image was taken pre-clean-up but gave me a pretty good idea of the way this thing would print.

Next, and again for the Trench run, I designed and printed out an exhaust port - this was on a higher quality print, but given the entry-level of my printer, the deficiencies show through. But hey, we all have to get our feet wet somewhere :)

This snowspeeder really does show the limitations of the printer - this is to scale with XWM and, from a distance, doesn't look terrible but as you look closer, the details are all mashed and incoherent. Simultaneously this makes me wish I had a higher-end printer and also nicely sets the boundaries of what I can achieve.

Having played with it for almost a week now, I'm really loving it. I expect at some point I'll outgrow this machine and need to upgrade, but for right now I'm printing out door-stops, chotskies for the kids and XWM stuff.

So - anyone else 3D printing and if so, what's your machine and what do your items look like? :)

Have a look at my thread from https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/221872-middys-simple-repaints-mods/page-3#entry2454071 here onwards...past couple of months stuff...

...like you with the snowspeeder, I've come to realise the limitations of my machine with small stuff...I may get a 0.3mm extruder in the coming weeks to try and get finer detail, but for now I don't bother with layers less than 0.2

...but there are times when the 'grain/weave' of the print can actually add to the appearance - I was happy with the look on my VCX midsection, and also on my Death Star surface here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/234846-over-the-death-star/#entry2503767

Also have a look at Herowannabe's thread about HotAC: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/229509-hotac-3d-printable-terrain-files-now-available/#entry2403097

...and tjkopena's thread about Tinkercad here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/230374-gr-75-cargo-pod-tokens/#entry2419394 ...and if you want to get really ambitious, take a look at https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/237014-molokh-gambit-narrative-campaign-w-extensive-custom-components/#entry2542255

Looking forward to seeing more of your printing!

Cheers

You are awesome - thank you!

I'm sure there was a thread where someone printed a Mobquet transport off Thingiverse...but can I find it?!!! :(

Anyway, lots of nice stuff on Thingiverse, but I've found you have to be careful as a lot has been designed for modelling/animation - I think Joe (tjkopena) may have given a good explanation in one of the above threads as to the technical side of the issues with these, but basically I've found that when I've sliced them they often have 'holes' or layers missing - so if your slicer lets you examine its results on-screen, look very carefully at them for any daylight showing where it shouldn't ! ;)

Currently working on a:RepublicC70Frigate-TCW.jpg

printed in 3 parts

Cheers

What kind of printer do you have? I need to start boning up on specs and differences as I plot out future purchases...

Mines a XYZ da Vinci Junior 1.0 - very basic, and tied to their own PLA filament, but all enclosed and with an SD card reader which were features that attracted me...as well as the price...has a 150x150x150mm build space, but an unheated bed.

I didn't even know there was an alternative extruder available until a few weeks ago, not been able to find anyone online with experience of it, but I may risk giving it a go

Thank you - interesting that even though my M3D goes to 50 microns, you seem to be getting an exponentially better quality print than I am.

Edit: mine also has an unheated bed which has caused a bunch of failed jobs due to curling - added some blue painted tape and just started a job now to see if that helps.

I came across the reference to the 0.3mm extruder in a review of the Junior on Amazon, as follows:
"0.1mm printing is a bit of a red herring, it's only an option in the advanced menu and doesn't produce layer consistency, there is a 0.3mm extruder available so it may work better with that but 0.1mm step height on a 0.4mm nozzle is never going to really work unless your printer is made of unicorn dust."
No reason to believe otherwise based upon my own experience, so it may be worth you trying something between 0.1 and 0.2, since your nozzle is, I believe, 0.35 ?
Also, I mentioned in one of the above threads some bed sheets I got from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01EN91OS0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) - they're now not available, but you may be able to find something similar - I have only good things to say about them, I'm still on my first and the only curling I've had was on particularly large, rectangular pieces that curled perhaps 1mm at the corners, and which may have been because I used too high an infill %.
The other solution I've seen quite a bit now, first in one of the above threads, is spraying the bed with hairspray - may be worth a try if the tape doesn't work too well or is messy to remove...
I think you do have to accept that smaller prints are going to suffer proportionate detail loss, and larger multi-part prints may need filling upon assembly...the price to pay unless you want to drop £3K+ for a resin-based machine!
Cheers ;)

I couldn't help myself, I did a lateral upgrade to a Monoprice Select Mini. Have only done one test print so far but it's quality is exponentially better than the M3D. Can't wait to try something more X-Wing related!

And I have set my sights on the Original Prusa MK II but need to save my shekels for that...

I still use shapeways. Id ather have my own and intend to do so as soon as possible but i need something like the Form 1 to go along with my obsession with detailing. And those do not come cheap *L*

Ha, I know just what you mean. My next step is a Prusa which isn't in the same class as a resin-based machine but is largely considered to box way outside of it's weight, in comparison to other machines in various price points.

A current top 10

Prusa.

Id love a good stl printer but that is so far out of my price range it doesnt bear thinking about

I made this card caddy a long long time ago and it seems to still be popular..... even though I made an updated version the original still seems to get a lot of downloads.

I have a 3D print since two years.

It's a really cheap 3Drag (aka Velleman K8200), with some fixes and modifications.

With my two sons (12 and 8 years old), we print a lot of new ships and some proxies for XWING:

When friends of my sons come to play, they are a bit inattentive and rude, so I prefer When They use their own ships or our proxies.

Last but not least 3D printed ships are great to test new painting scheme.

I like very much Simplify 3D software for the slicing.

Try to reprint our experiments and have fun.
Ask for settings, if you need.

These are awesome - thank you for sharing!

I posted these elsewhere (by mistake), posting them here to keep my stuff in one thread. I upgraded from the M3D (the only good thing about which I can say is that it looks cool and got me hooked) to a Monoprice Select Mini which is just leaps and bounds better in terms of operation and quality. What a fun hobby this is :)
