U Dash Ragin'?

By Jadotch, in X-Wing

A "fun" build I came up with:

Dash Rendar

Rage
Heavy Laser Cannon

Outrider

Kyle Katarn

Proton Rocket
Smuggling Compartment
Counter Measures

Scavenger Crane

Cassian Andor
Adaptability +1 (Or VI)

Jan Ors
Inspiring Recruit

Plus what ever other goodies you want to add to the U-Wing.

So the concept is to token stack Dash. Dash activates takes Rage. Rage gives Dash a focus plus 2 stress tokens (and attack re-rolls). Cassian activates relieves Dash of one Stress, Kyle converts it into a focus. The inspiring recruit takes the next stress token, Kyle converts it into a focus and Jan converts the focus into an evade. (So a total of 2 focus and 1 evade tokens and rerolls attacks)

If some poor unfortunate soul is in your front arc at Range 1, activate the counter measures for your 5-Dice Procket attack.

A ship gets destroyed, regain your countermeasures or your Prockets.

I don't know how viable it is, but I may have to try it in a casual game.

That's quite the combo and definitely something I'd also try. In terms of filling out the rest of the points, I'd go Adaptability on Cassian to make them both 7 to allow for your choice on who moves and shoots first. Probably Engine Upgrade on Cassian to help him stay with Dash in range 1-2 to keep that ability going. I'm inclined to think of a more defensive upgrade in the sensor slot for Cassian as well such as Sensor Jammer or Reinforced Deflectors to help him stay alive longer to support Dash. I basically look at this as a type of Dengaroo for Rebels. How effective by comparison? We'll have to see through some games/testing...

Other than the timing not quite working because Cassian is start of Activation rather than start of Combat, so you have to alternate rounds to get started, it looks pretty fun.

Appears to work like this:

[Round 1]

Dash: Move, Action: Rage, get Focus (could be Evade) + two stress & rerolls

Cassian: Move + Action

[Round 2]

Cassian removes stress from Dash, who gets 2 x Focus or Focus + Evade

Dash: Move, Action: Rage, get Focus + two stress & rerolls

Cassian: Move + Action

(rinse, repeat)

The only problem is that Dash can't use Barrel Roll; you might consider Experimental Interface instead of Countermeasures so if you need to you can BR + EI (Focus or Rage again).

I had fun last week using Ragin Chewy with Inspired Recruit to basically Rage every round, paired with Rey + Kanan so when Rey wasn't clearing stress with a white Chewie could. Inspired Recruit is bringing a lot of Rage builds back.

Kyle only works when his ship removes the stress, not when another ship removes the stress from his ship. Check the FAQ entry for Wingman.

If he does a green maneuver and is the One removing the stress it would work. That then begs the question if combined with experimental interface does Kyle katarn give one Focus or two if inspired recruit is triggered during the green maneuver?

Dash only works when Cassian is alive, and has to choose between repositioning and mods.

Doesn't seem the best plan.

Even though it doesn't completely work as well as the OP intended it to, same could be said about Dengaroo. Kill Manaroo and the build on Dengar is severely less effective. Not saying it's anywhere near as effective as Dengaroo, but this is along the same line of thinking as Dengaroo.

Kyle triggers everytime the ship to which he is equipped removes a stress token from itself.

Manaroo isn't tethered to within range 1-2 of Dengar though. Making Dash (one of THE most manoeuvrable and unpredictable ships in the game with PTL and EU) stay within 1-2 of a ship with a dial barely better than a Lambda is a Bad Idea.

Deleted due to stupidity :)

(There's always one more detail you've missed!)

This doesn't work because Kyle doesn't work when he removes a token from another friendly ship. He only works if he removes a token from the ship he is on. Please check the FAQ.

Apart from this, I am wondering if there is a second problem with timing:

The pilot ability of Cassian Andor triggers "at the start of the activation phase".... so if Dash has already moved, isn't that point in time already over? Shouldnt it trigger BEFORE anybody has moved?

OK, I did not know the FAQ asterisk about Kyle. My bad.

I ran a recruit with Dengar and Rage this weekend (albeit in a friendly game), with the amount of green he has he's still not easy to block and just save the focus for defense. But synergy wise with Cassian it does look good, pulling the stress at the start gives you the full dial on Dash but maintaining the formation is going to be the challenge.

Can't find your specific FAQ reference for Kyle, but I assume you are referring to "you" on Kyle's card, meaning when the ship HE is on removes stress (not another ship removes stress from the ship HE is on).

You're right in your timing question but that opens Dash's dial up since you could set a maneuver which would Cassian out of range 1 - 2 until Cassian catches up. So Cassian clears the stress, Dash moves, rages etc... then Cassian catches him up to do his own action before rinse/repeat next round.

Why not swap Ezra Bridger for Kyle on Dash, provides the means of changing an Eyeball without using the re-roll or spending Focus on offense (imo he wants to save it for defense).

I was just looking over inspired recruit + Cassian ability and it does not seem to work either as its worded similar to Katarn. Because Cassian is the one removing the stress from another ship, inspired recruit does not work with Cassian's ability. The ship would have to do a green maneuver (or be the one removing the stress) to trigger inspired recruit to remove another. Shame as I had many plans for that combo.

Well, let's have a closer look then.

Inspiring recruit can be used for the ship he is on, as well as for any other friendly ship in range.

In contrast to that, the pilot ability of Cassian Andor doesn't work for himself.

Cassian Andor may remove 1 stress token from another friendly ship only.

But these two abilities seem to work together very well:

If Cassian Andor removes one stress token from another ship via Pilot Ability, he may also remove a second stress token. The wording doesn't hinder you, because Cassian is the "friendly ship at range 1-2" removing a stress token. He's just not removing it from his own ship, but from another friendly ship. So, Inspiring Recruit does allow him to remove a second token right there as well.

I like the proton rocket idea for coverage but I think the rage combo wouldn't do well if Cassian was incapacitated. If you put expertise on dash you get the focus from a crew like Rey along with Jan helping would make dash hard to hit yet with an almost fully modded attack. Gives you the ability to barrel roll more and when the need arises you have a cache of focus from Rey with the evade from Jan, you also can use the action to target lock, gauranteed hits just about every time.

Also, when you need the stress removal for expertise, it's built in.
