Yet another biggs question

By Jugdishian, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So I am playing and I have 3 ships on the board. One is biggs and the others are an arc 170 and a Y wing. Both ships are in range 1 of biggs. So my opponent is flying a YV-666 equipped with a K4 Security Droid (gives target lock with green maneuvers) and homing missles. So the YV-666 does a green maneuver and is in range 3 of both biggs and the arc-170. Both biggs and the arc-170 are in the YV-666 primary arc. He takes the free target lock with the k4 security droid on the arc-170. When combat comes he fires the homing missiles at the Arc-170.

I said he was not able to use the K4 droid to take a target lock on the ARC-170 because he was able to target biggs instead. So combat comes and since he had the target lock on another ship next to biggs he could not target bigs with the homing missiles but instead had to shoot at the ARC....but I said no because when he took the target lock he could have done so on biggs but chose not to.

I guess what also needs to be answered is the act of taking a target lock considered "targeting for attack" or is only declaring and enemy to attack considered "targeting for attack" as written on biggs card.

Any answers would be appreciated.

Biggs only forces you to shoot at him if you can. He can't force you to target lock him, and he can't force the choice of weapon.
If your opponent had declared that he was making a primary attack, then he would have to attack Biggs.

Acquiring a Target Lock is is not "targeting for an attack" and Biggs's ability does not force you to target lock him.

There's 5 sub-steps of the "Declare Target" step for an attack

  1. Measure range to enemy ships and check attacker's firing arc
  2. Attacker chooses weapon.
  3. Declare target of the attack
  4. Pay cost to perform the attack (if applicable)
  5. Target of the attack becomes the defender

3. is the only time that Biggs's ability is triggered,

Do Biggs have even a mention about locks? No? So do what the cards says.

This is what the new FAQ did to Biggs. If the attacking ship can fire a weapon at an opponent, but cannot target Biggs with that weapon, the ship is free to target another ship.

Arguably, it was the case before, the timing chart (and Biggs entry) just solidified it. :(

The attacker may measure range to any number of enemy ships and check which enemy ships are inside his firing arc. Then the attacker chooses one of his weapons to attack with. Then he chooses one enemy ship to be the target and pays any costs required for the attack.

Except that the previous FAQ specifically said in it that if the attacker had a weapon that was able to target Biggs they had to use that weapon. The most recent one changed it so now Biggs cannot influence weapon choice.

Which is why the OP's opponent was 100% correct in the example given. He can target lock anyone he wants. If he chooses Homing Missile as his weapon he is only allowed to shoot someone he has locked. If that's not Biggs then it's not Biggs.

Indeed, this is probably going to be a bit of a tripping up point for a while, as up until the most recent FAQ Biggs had a clarification that his ability specifically overruled the rules in the case of weapon selection and prevented the ability to fire the missile at the ARC in the OP's scenario. Still wasn't anything to stop you target locking the Arc but when combat came it used to be you would be forced to make a primary attack against Biggs instead.

Now his ability obeys the attack timing chart without the exception, but it'll probably take getting used to for some people.

Sorry to necro a post but is this completely confirmed?

If I target lock a ship other than Biggs, I am free to launch homing missiles at it ignoring Biggs?

I only ask as there seems to be alot confusion else where on the internet with the timing chart, a fair few people saying that due to the timing chart. Has anyone had it come up in a major tournament?

Yes because Biggs can't be the legal target
