Would you ever fly Omega Leader without upgrades?

By haritos, in X-Wing

We all know the standard, com relay + juke omega leader build, and its pretty awesome.

But Omega Leader's ability by itself is pretty sick coming at 21 points.

I dont know if there is any list that would benefit from the 5 additional points you 'd get by not putting any upgrades on Omega Leader, has anyone tried it?

Omega leader + a score to settle. Not bad at all, and still 21pts.

Great question.

I probably wouldn't because Imperial has a lot of options at that price point (Crack Striker is 21 points) and those other options tend to make phenomenal blockers. OL bare has that 2016 Ace PS and would be a nuisance, but doesn't deny actions like a good blocker does - plus he's not going to live too long without Palp and/or SD/evade.

That being said, A Score to Settle and Lightweight Frame is only 23 points - though LWF will not proc as often as you want for 2 points.

You can't equip LWF on ships with 3 or more agility.

I probably wouldn't. Comm Relay is basically the Imperial equivalent of a regenerating shield upgrade in most scenarios. It keeps Omega in the game longer.

And Juke is critical to Omega's offense. Most ships in the current meta don't have trouble getting 1-2 evade results on natural dice. Juke allows Omega to threaten even the mighty Soontir Fel on every attack. Even a single hit requires Soontir to get two natural evades to avoid taking damage. It's like having permanent Crack Shot.

Very difficult to imagine a list that even has that many points floating

And Id provably stick to crackshot zeta L at that point. Modsor no, 2 red dice still get ****** by naked greens, hence why Juke is such a godsend

So... would naked Omega and Crackshot Zeta Leader then leave 58 for something interesting? :P

I think the rough consensus you're getting is that the Empire has better options for that price point than a naked Omega Leader.

I just tried it, but the 5 points for Juke and Comm are just insanely good and 100% worth the investigation

The only thing I would try out is Omega Leader with Swarm Leader to boost his attack to 4 dice

In short, no... Omega Leader is only rolling 2 attack, maybe 3 in a perfect range 1 scenario. He really needs the ability to keep folks from getting evades whenever possible, even if he can prevent them from modifying the dice.

Without the upgrades, he's a minor nuisance that may or may not get a hit in. With the upgrades, he's actually a threat that can consistently chip away at the opponent (especially once he has TL + the evade on comm relay, and can focus for his action) and there's not much you can do about it but get him off the board.

It's one of those situations where the upgrades are just too efficient to pass up. She wouldn't be bad without that combo; but 99% of the time, those five points are going to be better on Omega than anywhere else in your list.

Yes. Yes I would. ;)

I don't fly Omega Leader that often, but when I do, I don't put any upgrades on him. It's about cost efficiency. He has a good ability, but he still only has 2 attack dice. So he isn't ever going to be the star of my list.

Therefore always with Juke and Comm to get a pseudo-third die (more accurately: your opponent gets one fewer defense die)

26 point juke relay omega is far more cost efficient than 21 point nothing omega

Because juke relay wont fail to hurt/die to unmodified dice even remotely as often

No, because without Juke 2 attack dice doesn't cut it.

Don't run two attack dice unless you.... Uh snap shot.

His PS and ability is not helpful for Snap shot.

There is nothing better than Juke/Comm

I'm running OL with PTL and Primed Thrusters, not bad, his role is to deal 25% of damage and rises to it every time without the classic juke+comms setup.

What I'm trying to say is that success entirely deppends on his wingmen so experiment with new loadouts...it's free!

I'll definetly try OL+ A score to settle :)

I meant ever.

For anybody.

Would you ever fly Soontir Fel without upgrades? :)

Carnor Jax would be a fairer question.

OL's ability is enhanced by, but not dependent on, upgrades. Fel's ability needs certain upgrades to trigger reliably.

The only ships being flown now a days without upgrades are cheap blockers like ties and z95s. Why would fly any ship without upgrades? Let alone a flimsy imperial ship! Those suckers are the most reliant on upgrades lol, Omega just happens to be one of the pilots that requires less upgrades then normal to be useable.

VI OL is, to date, the most annoying 22pts I ever had to deal with. Not particularly dangerous or difficult, but he is still king of 1v1s and diverts a lot of firepower that is meant for his friends
