I have some time off and I been thinking about playing some Imperial Assault with 4 of my 5 kids. The 3 girls can read well enough to handle themselves, but my 5 year old son can't read yet (he's getting there though).

He's a smart kid and plays X-Wing, and he understands a lot of the upgrade combos that are in that game from memory - so I know he can handle IA if I get him the right hero to play.

Recommendations?

Well done for introducing your kids to these great games - I've been playing x wing and IA with my son since he was 7 and it's been a great bonding experience.

He first used Garkhan in an IA campaign, the concept of the character is pretty straight forward and it worked out well.

I agree Garkhan is the best plus what 5 year old doesn't want to be a wookie.

My son loves vader as well. And when asked "what do we do with rebels." Hehe says fight them.

Ot.. though. Awesome teaching them early. I think I'll start with my 4 year old soon.

In all seriousness, Garkhaan is a great choice for many reasons. He has lots of health and a black defense die, so he's more forgiving than some others, and being melee, your son won't have to worry about line of sight rules.

Garkhaan could be a good choice, but as an alternative, I feel like Loku is pretty straightforward too. My friend playing him in our campaign really loves this hero, as with a good gun he can really snipe figures across the map, which must feel good.

Considering I play like a 5 year old boy a lot of the time (RUN IN! KILL THINGS!) I'm pretty confident in recommending Gaarkhan, Biv, or maybe Fenn (with his Brawler upgrade path).

Totally agree with Gaarkhan. You can just ignore his class cards and get Rampage and Unstoppable, both are extremely simple effects that are strong and can be easily memorized.

Given the suggestions thus far, my answer would be superfluous.

As a parent of three kiddos ages 6-almost-5, applause to you. We've done some basic skirmish (without command cards), but not a full campaign. I don't know that I have the stamina.

I think Fenn is the best. Just aim and shoot. While Gaarkhan seems a bit easier to just tank and spank, I fear he'll end up wounded first a lot and that doesn't make young kids happy. LOS isn't too much of an issue, he just needs to sit in the back, aim, and shoot.
