I Have Most Wanted: Z-95 v Y-Wing, Rebel Version?

By Ob3ron, in X-Wing

While we're idling away waiting for the rest of Wave X to hit and news of Wave 11, how about this for a discussion?

I have the Most Wanted expansion, and you can see the rest of my collection in my signature. I have a chance to get an expansion for 20% off. Which one of these two should I get? The Z-95 or Y-Wing. I'm leaning toward the Z because I'd have three of the models and four pilots, but the Y-wing is a tougher ship and TLT platform.

"Both" is a great answer but I want the discussion to be about these venerable ships only.

Thanks for your suggestions.

EDIT:

Clarification added after some responses: I am thinking more in line with adding to my small Rebel collection rather than Scum.

Is this expansion going to be used in the rebel faction? Or will it only be as a supplement to your scum?

I'd go with the Y of just the two so the Ywing can exist in either the rebels or the scum as a TLT carrier.

And, if you are looking at only Scum and only have the budget for one small ship, why not pick up the G1A/Mist Hunter since it looks like you don't have one? That would be a much better value for a Scum player IMO because you get two really good crew cards and what is more or less a Scum B-Wing with a built-in crew slot. I fly a lot of Scum, and while I rarely use the G1A model, Zuckess and/or 4LOM crew cards are frequently turning up in my lists.

When discussing purchase plans, I find it much easier to state which products you've purchased, rather than which ships you own.

I second the G1-A, but if it's not on sale, then I can understand that it's not an option.

I would get the Y-wing because Most Wanted was made to refit one Rebel Y-wing into the Scum faction in addition to the included Scum Y-wing. Personally, I don't like using a Rebel Z-95 with my Most Wanted Z-95s because you can't do 3 generics at the same pilot skill. You'd have to have either 2 Binayre Pirates and 1 Black Sun Soldier, or 2 Black Sun Soldiers and 1 Binayre Pirate. Of course, if you are using one of the named pilots, this becomes a non-issue, but for me, it's enough to pick up the Y-wing.

Two Y-wings can be a respectable half a list. Looks like you don't have K-wing for the TLT though.

3 Z-95 can be a good swarm with feedback on each, and it loks like you have enough of those.

If you're getting a big discount on a single item, make that item a bigger msrp to take advantage?

As others have said. Z95's function best (to my mind) in a swarm - I would go with the Y-Wing, specially as there is a good chance that after the most recent movie, we will get new Y-wing pilots

Clarification: I wanted the ship for Rebel force and yes, the GA-1 would be worthwhile for my larger Scum force. (Will edit opening thread, too.)

I have the TLT card separate from an expansion and would figure the ARC I have would fill that role on a Rebel force.

I like the Y wing for the R2 card. I'm assuming you want the rebel version for cards for tourney play?

One factor to consider is the chit, the insert in the base. I don't have my collection in fro t of me, but I know that Gold Squadron and Dutch are on one, with Gray and Horton Salm on the other. Z-95 I'm less sure of,but I think Bandit and Blount are one, and Tala and Cracken are on the other.

Even with Moat Wanted for the model and dial, you'll not be able to play more than one copy of any given rebel pilot because you'll only have, for example, one Gold Squadron Pilot base. If you want to do paired TLTs, you'll have to do Gold Squadron Pilot and either Grey Squadron pilot or Horton Salm. For the Z, it's a similar story - Bandit and Tala, Tala and Blount, Blount and Cracken or Cracken and Bandit.*

Personally, I love both ships. I have 10 Z-95s and 5 Y Wings. Slightly over the top, I'll grant, but the fact is that both ships really shine in groups (or at least pairs) far more than they do in singles. It really depends on the lists you want to play - a 12 point Bandit often does more than it's fair share of work as a blocker and, if it survived, shooting last against an opponent who's probably tokenless by the end of the combat round. Also great in Rebel toolkit lists, but TBH your rebel collection is probably a bit too small to make a good toolkit. Blount with Ion Pulse Missiles (both in the Z-95 pack) is a one shot trick, but it is the only absolutely guaranteed way to get a defender ioned, which will very probably mean a dead defender next round if you can capitalise on it, and Cracken is an extremely cheap way to get PS10 action efficiency into your list - I love him with homing missile, VI and Vectored Thrusters (27 points total).

All that said, IMO, the Y Wing is a better choice for the current meta. It's a TLT carrier, and a very cheap 8 hp - one of the most points efficient ways to get hit points on the board in the game (the Lothal rebel just barely beats it). Ion is an underused control type right now, but very powerful against X7 defenders, and the Ion Cannon Turret that comes with the Y wing is a very good delivery method (multiple shots, though much less reliable than the absolute guarantee that Blount offers). Finally, R2 Astromech is the default choice for Integrated Astromech if you want a cheap T-70.

Either pack let's you build some cheap, near self contained useful additions to rebel lists. My advice is the Y, but play with some Kiara, and buy what you want to fly, rather than what people like me might tell you is better. ;)

* Note - this only really applies in formal settings, in casual you and your opponent can surely work it out to play with stand-in chits.

As MacchuWA mentions the biggest issue with either is simply having the base tiles to play them. If you get either the Z-95 or Y-Wing expansions you'll only be able to field two rebel ships of that type because of how the base tiles work out. The dials may be freely interchangeable but the other parts are the limiting factor here.

While unannounced, it is most likely we will get a Rebel Veterans special set some time soon. This would include the X-Wing and Y-Wing and have pilots from Rogue one, which there are many for FFG to fill in. The Y wing pilots are a let down in the rebel pack, so it may be best to wait for for the veterans pack for that. The Z-95 has some interesting pilots and it is doubtful we will see another version of that ship for a long time.

And yes, the base may be an issue, but why buy one when you can buy two for twice the cost? Also check ebay, people buy ton of these ships, part out the cards for individual sale and dump the models off cheap, with the bases.

Y-Wing so you can have a 25 point TLT option for Rebel and the ability to field 2x TLT thugs + 1 big ship for Scum.

Thanks to everyone who responded, particularly after I clarified things.

MacchuWA laid out the case for either ship very well.

Bojanglez and Mep reminded me that a Rebel Veterans would likely provide a new set of Y-Wing pilots from TFA, waiting for the potential expansion to fulfill a Y-Wing need. And yes, that ship for either faction is a very cheap way to put 8 HP on the map. Nevertheless, these arguments lean me toward the Z-95, which is likely not to get any further FFG love.

I like the idea of having a cheap fighter/missile platform to throw in with the more expensive options I have for Rebels. I don't think a swarm of three Scum Zs is worth considering and, of course, not possible given the chit situation.
