Editing Makashi for Fencing

By Vondy, in Game Masters

I am building a dispossessed noble-charmer who is a specialist with the vibrorapier. He's not a horrid shot, but dueling is his power niche. I would like some ranks of parry. I was thinking about filing the serial numbers off of Makashi Technique from FAD for a second spec with the following tweaks:

  • Allow Makashi Techique to apply to melee weapons instead of lightsabers.
  • Turn Sum Djem into a non-force talent named Disarm for use with Melee weapons.
  • Replace Makashi Flourish with a second rank of Defensive Training.
  • Replace Makashi Finish with Supreme Parry.
  • Replace the Lightsaber skill with Melee.

Thoughts?

Sure why not? If it's a cool house rule you wanna try out around the table then thats awesome if it fits into the style of the tree; I mean I find the tree decent enough for non FS otherwise but it's like to carve out a niche that doesn't really exist in any other existing tree atm.

I think the main reason for a lack of cool dueling classes is namely because we only ever see Jedi/sith do that thing in the movies.

Seems reasonable. The only issue is that Supreme Parry is a Force talent. Your options might be to house rule Supreme Talent to be non-Force or replace Makashi Finish with something else. Maybe create an Improved Defensive Training.

My question is, do you make the spec a universal, or do you add it to a particular career? What is the character's career and primary spec?

Also, Martial Artist (from No Disintegrations) might be a good spec for your character. It seems at least somewhat focused on fighting without weapons but it has ranks of Parry, so... :)

You can already disarm people with [TR] or [AD][AD][AD]. Having another spec with faint might be not the best idea because it becomes a little crazy powerful once you reach 4 ranks of it. There is a good reason for having duplicated three's under different careers in the system which is to avoid stacking of nearly identical talent trees. Makashi Duelist has a mild 10xp tax for non-force users is outside of that a perfect valid tree, especially if you combine it with something which has lethal blows. So if you really want some unique fencing tree that I would go with someone more unique and not just copy most of the makashi tree.

And btw now in legends, but somewhat plausible:

I think that the Makashi tree is perfect for a non FS duelist and just requires transforming the Force talents in normal talents that apply to melee weapons, and renaming them appropriately. I love the Duelist's technique name. I think that Makashi flourish should stay with a different name; as a devastating strike with the potential to end a fight in one swift stroke is a staple of a skilled duelist.
