I'm an OK painter, but I cannot get anything like this done. I'm thinking it takes equipment I just don't have. Anyone know who did this one or ones like it??

Not I, but I'd love to know how this was done. Guessing an airbrush, stencils and a lot of skill but would love more details than that.
It would take some work, but really you only additionally need micro tape, an exacto knife, and an airbrush. I would guess the symbol is made with a stencil and touched up with a brush. The Abresh (sp?) could be hand drawn or taped off.
I highly encourage you to give it a whirl and learn from your mistakes. If it doesn't work out you can always take it back to plastic with CLR and a toothbrush.
Give it a go!
Edited by flightmaster101This is doable without an airbrush. Its just the freehand that's hard to do.
How is your feathering/"wet blending" technique?
Edited by SarconI do believe it was someone here on these forums, but I don't remember who.
That specific piece of art got me in to the X-Wing repaints! Lambda is by Rodent Mastermind, also famed for designing the Cog'o'two acrylics.
I don't know if he's still active in the X-Wing scene.
A computer and a printer. Use white decal paper. The imperial emblem would need to be trimmed to show the black and the letters would need to be cutout individually. Tedious but doable.
I've found that for some reason, the Lambda model as it is takes paint less easily than others. So a re-spray with a spray paint or airbrush is defo recommended. Just to make your life easier.
The Lambda is actually easy to work on due to its flat panel surfaces.
So masking and laying down stencils for the Imperial Navy Insignia "which I bought of Ebay" were not difficult to do
I use Frog tape, Because the Piant wont seep underneath the tape and will not lift paint of the model
when peel the tape back.
And Tamiya tape for really fine masking............
Masking These small Models wasn't to Bad, So masking the Lambda is a much easier exercise. just a bit of time and patience.
The Model was Sprayed in White primer, Then I added the Imperial Mask, Then sprayed Black, and put a Circle mask
over the Imperial insignia. and then I did some light over sprays with grey Primer.
Dry brushed a lighter grey for panel highlights, and masked the red stripes and hand painted them.
No ink washes on this model as it will look messy and muddy on the large flat panels
Lot of fun painting this Lambda.
Im sure you will have fun with yours when you get round to it.
All the best,
Barry.
