What ships do I add to ballance the fun, and enjoy?

By clanofwolves, in Star Wars: Armada

I have a few bucks to spend, but I don't want to make Armada be the plastc-crack-addicton that X-Wing is for me (or I hope it might not, haha), so I would like to flush out my fleet and get a storage device that fits the ships I add. I currently have the BattleFoam Core Set Box insert that fits the Star Wars Armada Core Set (and a few additional squadrons I think), and I'd like to probably get a custom 12"x15"x3.5" foam and the related case from BF to fit the rest of what I purchase over the next week). This is what I have through a summer sale and two amazing --and unforeseen--Xmas gifts:

Star Wars Armada Core Set

Star Wars Armada Dice Pack
CR90 Corellian Corvette Expansion Pack

Nebulon-B Frigate Expansion Pack (X2)

Victory-Class Star Destroyer Expansion Pack

Imperial-Class Star Destroyer Expansion Pack (gift from the wife, yay!)
Imperial Raider Expansion Pack

Imperial Fighter Squadron Expansion Pack (gift from my youngest, yay!)

I was told by a guy at my LGS that the new wave might be my best bet to find some add-ons to what I have as well as an MC80. He's not into squadron flying and I kinda think I'm going to be a big ship on big ship kinda guy as I have X-Wing to fill the fighter void. I will more than likely only fly casual, with pint in hand.

Thanks for the input, oh, experts of the Armada!

Given your family's love...

Gladiator Pack - it has strong AA dice.

Gozanti x 2

Imperial Light Crusier (RBD for the ISD and Fletchettes for the Raider).

Basically, you can kit out your ISD to be the beast that it is... use Comms Net and Repair Crews on the Gozanti. You can then you some fighters... about 60 pts just to keep some squadrons off you.

I've been reading a lot, and, So far, I'm leaning this way:

Rebs: 2 MC30s, 1 Home MC80, 1 New Squadron

Imps: 1 Gladiator, 1 Light Cruiser, 1 Decimator Squadron

Anything you add will open up new builds for more fun.

So have at it.

I have a few bucks to spend, but I don't want to make Armada be the plastc-crack-addicton that X-Wing is for me (or I hope it might not, haha), so I would like to flush out my fleet and get a storage device that fits the ships I add.

I'm the same way. I spent a small fortune on X-Wing but would still like to play Armada. But I can't afford it as I did X-Wing. So I limited my purchases and bought through Wave III, but only one of each of the larger ships. In total that is still several ships, including the Core that would be:

  • 1 x Imperial-class Star Destroyer
  • 1 x Home One
  • 2 x Victory-class Star Destroyer
  • 1 x MC30c Frigate
  • 2 x CR90 Corellian Corvette
  • 2 x Nebulon-B Frigate
  • 1 x Gladiator-class Star Destroyer - I've been debating on a second since I see them in pairs
  • 1 x Assault Frigate Mark II - I've been debating on a second since I see them in pairs
  • 2 x Imperial Raider
  • 2 x Rebel Fighter Squadrons; plus what comes in the core
  • 2 x Imperial Fighter Squadrons; plus what comes in the core
  • 1 x Rogues and Villains - Except for theme I would not have gotten these as I like the fleets better.
  • 2 x Imperial Assault Carriers
  • 2 x Rebel Transports
I've been debating on getting a second of the Gladiator-class Star Destroyer and Assault Frigate Mark II. I've seen them in pairs but don't know if it's worth it. I want to keep the game light and balanced. I could really use some advice here.

Originally I stopped at Wave II but the Transports was in RotJ, so I thought Wave III would be a simple addition. Plus since and I have both the Carrier and Transport in X-Wing I just couldn't resist. My bad!

I doubt that I will get Wave IV, Interdictor and Liberty. However I like the looks of the Interdictor and may get it just for that reason alone. I don't know even about using its cards though. It would be good to have in home made missions. As for the Liberty I've used it in Empire at War so maybe... As I said I want to keep the game light so new mechanics or things that throw the game out of balance doesn't really entice me. I'll save a space for them and decide later. But I do like the looks of the Interdictor.

So unless they come out with a highly detailed and very well painted Super Star Destroyer I have bought my kit. :D

P.S. I wonder if this is enough for The Corellian Conflict. I could use some advise here too.

[Edit: as above I'm trying to keep variety without adding complication, keeping it light, simple and balanced. Any advise is appreciated. Should I put this in its own post?]

The nice thing about Armada is every ship can be relevant with the right fleet and support. So you can't go wrong buying 1 or 2 of anything.

I'd suggest:

Gladiator

Rogues and Villains

GR-75

Gozanti

Pelta

Arquitens

Wave 5 Imp and Rebel squads

CC

These are the "cheaper" expansions but have solid ships and great upgrades in them. If you are looking to spend a little bit more money:

Liberty

Interdictor

Assault Frigate

Home One

These ships cost more points, so you will likely only use 1 of them in a fleet. I prefer the Liberty because it is a smaller Rebel ISD and has offensive upgrades in it (turbolasers and ion cannons). The Interdictor is fun if you want to have a more "control" based fleet, and has squadron upgrades that I would say are auto-includes in every heavy squadron list.

Don't be shy about dipping into squads. They take a while getting used to, but a swarm of Y-Wings and B-Wings can tear through an ISD surprisingly quick.

I will say, getting a flotilla for each side is essential. I'm assuming you are a new player, but as you get more experience, you will start to understand the importance deployments and activations. Flotillas help boost this with a cheap ship and has some solid support upgrades.
