Star wars ships and what they looked like. reference material

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I thought I would make a spot for various reference mterial about the models used for filming the movies. At the super small scale we are working with here this may not be super useful. However, just in case someone wantd to try and go for a hyper accurate falcon or wanted to nail down the various details on a tie fighter. heres some stuff.

Millenium Falcon-

When talking about the millenium falcon there are actually several to pick from. the models used were diferent from movie to movie and as time went on they were even diferent from themselves because pieces have been breaking off and getting lost. the practical sets had details the models did not have and vice versa.

In general when people talk about THE Falcon, they are refering to the 5 foot model. it was the one made for ANH. it was big, and didnt move well. in ESB they needed a model that could perform better motion so a smaller 32 inch version was made based on the 5 footer. (This is the one with the extra landing gear, all the lights in wierd places and the slightly longer cockpit)

well, this could go on all day so on to the pictures.

this is the 5 foot filming model -

Y-wings-

Again there were several ,they were all slightly diferent etc etc etc.this is the first Y-wing made by ILM. in december of 1975. It was sent to Elstree unfinished to be used as reference for the 1:1 scale set piece model. Interesting color differences from the one ffg used to color theirs. so if you want to make some color changes to represent this one.

compared to gold leader, wich Is the one I think ffg based its colors on.

If this kind of thing is useful to anyone I can do more.

very useful. Please do more.

Here's one for fun. And by fun...I mean stomach turning my gross.

George wanted tie fighters to be maroon. But they were pink. And it didn't show up well on composite shots with a black "space" background.

So...If you want to make an ORIGINAL OFFICIAL as George Lucas intended tie fighter...

Well, better get some pinkish purple mixed up.

Actually....a cool repaint would be the exact colors on the test model in the pictures. Half pink half gray.
