Ex scout trooper officer: options

By RLogue177, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

"The pay is a lot better in the private sector."

Player wants to create a character who is a former scout trooper officer turned merc. She wants a "combat scout" who can "explore and secure" wilderness environments. She also wants to get into the leadership aspect of the character concept.

Edge of the Empire game, but with all careers and specs are available. Which of her options seems like the best initial choice...

A) Soldier. Trailblazer, Tactician.

B) Hired Gun. Mercenary Soldier, Survivalist

C) Hired Gun. Mercenary Soldier, Scout

D) Hired Gun. Mercenary Soldier, Trailblazer

E) Hired Gun. Mercenary Soldier, Big-Game Hunter

F) Explorer. Scout, Tactician

Trailblazer is a great spec because it mixes a good deal of outdoors stuff with things that I would consider to be "leadership" talents (all the talents that support the character or their allies when in cover). Also, there's a talent that lets you set traps, which is great for combat but can also be used to roleplay catching food in the wilderness.

Then again, I'm biased. My Commander Tactician just picked up the Trailblazer spec last time we were awarded XP and I think the combo is fun. Still, the Tactician spec is really fun. There are great Leadership talents and actions there and a few ranks of "survival" talents.

I would second Tactician and Trailblazer but also suggest Sharpshooter and Tactician if you wanted more of the sniper aspect of the scout trooper. The two ranks of Deadly Accuracy can enhance both of the Ranged skills in combat and the two ranks of True Aim speak for themselves.

Scout has a nice bunch of characterful talents and also adds a nice breadth of class skills. If you don't want to go single-spec for some reason, I'd pair it with Commando or Sharpshooter, personally.

What book is Trailblazer in?

Forged in Battle.

It has as selection of Survival related talents (including a unique one that allows you to use Survival instead of Cool/Discipline for a Strain Recovery check in the wilderness) and combat/leadership talents that are pretty powerful and can be extended to allies, but generally requires people to be in cover (increase Soak, add Advantage, and - benefiting you only - when in cover take maneuver to add damage equal to ranks in Stealth against a target within Short range). There's also Cunning Snare which lets you set a trap and some ranks of Disorient to pair with Prey on the Weak which lets you do extra damage to disoriented targets.

Ace: Beast Rider is an excellent Scout character too. But knowing where your character came from is far less important than knowing where you want to end up.

Does the player want to be the Leader? Start with Tactician

A shooter? Soldier, with basically any of the specs, or Executioner

Is the characters interaction with the wilderness more important? Survivalist, Scout (both are interesting), Pathfinder.

Is there an interest in animals? Beast Rider, Hunter, Big Game Hunter, Hermit.

Intellectual Scout? Navigator

I like B.

Scout and sharpshooter to get the ball rolling and then possibly go into beast rider and then possibly racer.

Anyone have a copy of the trait tree I can use until I can get this book?

(It is Age of Rebellion, right?)
