Corellian Conflict: General Tagge and Scarred ships

By Democratus, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

According to the CC rules: " Ships : When a scarred ship is deployed, it must chose and discard one defense token."

Rules on Tagge: "At the start of the third round and the fifth round, each friendly ship may recover 1 of its discarded defense tokens."

It appears to me that Tagge may be a great commander for heavily damaged fleets. But I would like to hear the opinions of others on whether his ability should work on scarred ships.

Special Bonus Round: What about the Devastator title?

I believe that Tagge could only recover defense tokens that the ship started with. I'm not a rules expert, but I think that otherwise Tagge would break the intention of the CC rules.

The ship does start with all it's tokens. It only discards a token when it is deployed.

By the line of your reasoning (which may totally be correct!) do you think scarred squadrons should be unable to use a station to heal the point of damage they start the battle with?

It might be that Tagge is just really good in corcon for that purpose. Interdictor is better in corcon also.

Hmmm good points. I feel like either Tagge and the squadrons should both be allowed or both not allowed for the sake of continuity. I'm curious what the rules wizards will soon have to say.

There are no Rules Objections to Either. (See Below Fluff. I want to have some fun. Long story.)

Fluff for Squadrons:

It happens at deployment... So everything seems to be okay, but then they break... Dammit, better use a better class of Duct-tape next time.

They can be haphazardly fixed during the battle, for sure...

... But if you don't actually do the maintenance on them , they'll just break next sortie, too... These things have basically been put back together from being blown apart, until they're spaceworthy... Doesn't mean they're tip-top. For that, you'll need more than Duct-Tape, Spit, Bailing Wire and Happy Thoughts ....

For Ships:

Its much the same... Everything seems okay, but then, critical power failure somewhere in a blacked-out-deck and boom, your capabilities are lessoned...

For Tagge... This man has charts , he is a planner of contingencies and situations... He instictively had a plan for that happening, and thus, Compensates... Allowing it to be recovered.

For Devestator... Remember. This is Darth Vader's Ship... Even if he's not on board, you better believe that when stuff goes wrong...... PEOPLE REDOUBLE THEIR EFFORTS TO COVER THAT CRAP UP. .......

So there's a Fluffy-Counter-Argument to "Fluff" not justifying it... Just in case...

Normally, you would not use "Fluff" to justify or counter-justify a statement. We look at the Rules.

The Rules do not tell us to treat them anything different to what they are stated to be - a Discarded Defense Token, in case of the Ships, or a Point of Damage, in the case of a Squadron.

Gallant Haven won't stop the point of Damage, because its not from an Attack... But a point of damage (as tracked on the squadron disc) can cetainly be fixed...

... its countered by the fact that, half the time, you'll be playing a mission that doesn't have a station that will let you fix, anyway ...

I like the idea that Tagge would get back the scarred tokens.

WARNING: TANGENT

There are no Rules Objections to Either. (See Below Fluff. I want to have some fun. Long story.)

I find your use of the word 'fluff' disturbing.

Semi-serious: The term really does irk me slightly. As a pejorative term, I associate it with people who don't care about the narrative background, and are in the game just for the competitive aspect of it. Many of these folks dismiss the enjoyment that those of us who really love Star Wars (or any other setting) get from the game being a model of warfare in that setting that we love.

I really prefer the term 'lore'.

But your mileage may vary. Use whichever word you like. ^_^

Fluff vs Crunch

Lore vs Rule

But sure, if you're offended, I'll be more mindful.

"Offended" is a big word.

I just hadn't had the opportunity to take one of my favorite pet peeves for a walk for a while. ;)

I feel the same. Not a big deal, just a little pet peeve.

What's the fluff behind why the term bothers you?

We had the same debate on the Warhammer forum back in the day. IIRC Gav Thorpe (lead designer at the time) said that every time you say fluff a kitten dies. I always preferred 'background'.

Bossk lives (loves?) to be a scarred squadron! "Scar me, I dare you!!!"

Keep in mind neither Tagge or the station un-scars the unit, it still permadies if it doesn't survive the battle, so neither is terribly game breaking.

Devastator loves being scarred too :)
