Is Snap Shot A Secondary Weapon?

By Astech, in X-Wing Rules Questions

It seemed pretty obvious to me that snap shot was a secondary weapon when I used it. However, a few local players have said that it wasn't a secondary weapon. However, this makes no sense, as if it isn't a secondary weapon, it has to be a primary, and would therefore get the range 1 combat bonus. So, is snap shot a secondary weapon?

It is a secondary. Any card that features the 'Attack:' header is a secondary weapon. Same for the illicit Hot-Shot Blaster. Illicit slot, secondary weapon still.

InterceptorMad is correct, this has also been answered by FFG here :

Rules Question:
Can Snap Shot be used like other Secondary Weapons when a ship activates in the Combat Phase? Thanks for you help.

Yes, but only under rare circumstance would this be a better idea than just using your primary weapon attack though.

Is frank assuming the target of Snap Shot has executed a maneuver in the combat phase then?

He's probably considering the case where you have a target that is within range and arc of Snap Shot but for some reason (Outrider) is not a valid target for a ship's primary weapon.

No, although if that did happen (e.g. Daredevil) then it would trigger Snap Shot. What he's saying is that another ship executing a maneuver is not a requirement to perform an attack with Snap Shot, but an opportunity.

In other words, you can use Snap Shot any time that you are able to perform an attack that does not specify a weapon (e.g. activation in the combat phase, Dengar [pilot] ability, etc.).

Ok, so the text on Snap Shot about movement is to get an opportunity to attack in the movement/action phase, but does not limit it to attacking after a maneuver. Ok. So my HWK can fire 2 unmodded dice at range one instead of two modded dice with the primary at range one. Gotcha.

I suppose if the maneuver had been required for the attack it would have all been in brackets.

Yes, Snap Shot allows an attack in the Activation phase when someone moves right in front of you, and then in th e Combat phase you can take a shot (not requiring the movement) if you have a target right in front of you. Although Frank's comment of " only under rare circumstance would this be a better idea" really translates to "You can, but WHY?"

You're running a TLT Hawk?

You're running a TLT Hawk?

... and you don't have a Focus token or Target Lock, and either you've got the old damage deck crit that reduces your primary weapon value by one but leaves secondaries alone or you're subject to Zertik Strom's pilot ability and don't get your Range 1 bonus die.

Short of some kind of defensive tech that works on primary weapons but not secondary, that's the only way Snap Shot can be better than your primary on a HWK.

Outrider remains the most obvious reason to do this.

So if snap shot is a secondary weapon, does that mean that snap on a YT-2400 (Leebo or Dash) with outrider title works 360 degrees?

No. Outrider only removes the arc restrictions for a Cannon upgrade on the ship.

However as a secondary weapon it can still be used as the Outrider title only disables the ship's primary weapon.
