Deploying onto Obstacles via Lieutenant Dormitz (or Han)

By RampancyTW, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, been looking at the obstacle rules and wording of abilities, and I'm not quite sure what happens if you deploy onto obstacles. Do you get to just ignore all penalties associated with it? Or will you suffer penalties when you deploy? (Stress, rolling for damage, etc.)

Anybody have any insight?

As there are no rules for at the moment, if you deploy onto an obstacle, as long as your maneuver template doesn't overlap the obstacle template when moving off of it there shouldn't be any penalties.

Wrong.

Latests FAQ states that any overlap on obstacle (any - it explicitly state in a separate section, not covering maneuver) cause you to suffer its effects. There is nothing there stating that deploying ship on obstacle is excluded from this rule.

So the moment you deploy a ship on obstacle - you roll for it and apply stress if this was debris.

Ah fair point, had forgotten that update from the latest FAQ

Fantastic. Thanks, ya'll.

I wonder if this could lead to Quickdraw getting to shoot in the deployment phase in some crazy game where both people are running dormitz. I need to measure that and see now...

It should be possible :D and that would be crazy - shooting in activation - cool, but shooting, possibly, before all ships have deployed....hell thats another thing :D

I guess the question becomes is deployment a 'round' or does the wording 'once per round' stop you from shooting during deployment for any reason. I don't think it does but I really don't know and this seems like a rare (but awesome) case.

Definitely possible to get the trigger to happen - New Han+Dormitz. But only with debris, you still can't shoot on asteroids.

If Quickdraw managed to shoot during Place Forces, that could be pretty brutal. Place Forces is before the Activate Shields step.

That also means that any Place Forces step obstacle damage would go against the hull. Ouch!

I did not realize there was a step for activating shields and that it was after place forces. Assuming that to be true that means Quickdraw can't fire in the place forces step since there are no shields to remove to trigger the attack.

No assumption required. See page 17 of the Rule Ref.

Or, if you're playing in a tournament, page 11 of the X-Wing Tournament Regulations document.

Really we got a step for that ? :D Deeeejjjmmm why whole X-wing tournaments were a lie :D

Which means that any damage from deploying Han on an obstacle will deal a card.
