Runewars FFG's 1st step towards WHFB?

By Wrathful, in Runewars

I am a fairly new FFG player, and I am wondering if the partial marriage between FFG and GW is getting ready to become more favorable for us consumers. It seems like Runewars COULD (note, I said could, not is or anything concrete) be a step towards a WHFB type system for FFG. I for one would like a massive army game that didn't require thousands of dollars to play. And from my expirences with FFG so far, they are very reasonably priced and a good value (my cheif complaint with GW).

I certainly wouldn't mind seeing something like this from FFG. I also wouldn't mind an RPG book set in Terrinoth (as has been discussed several times in the past by fans.)

I don't think FFG's partnership with GW is anything in this direction though. As far as I know, FFG's partnership with GW does not extend to working together on new games or sharing ideas on game design. Rather it is simply FFG taking old, long forgotten GW board games and bringing them back with shiney new bits.

FFG certainly doesn't need GW to make a tabletop game, and their inclinations to specialty dice mean they likely wouldn't want to borrow anything of GW's mechanics, even if GW was willing to let them (and I doubt very much that they are.) I'd still like to see a tabletop Terrinoth game though, if for no other reason than it would mean minis being sold separately so I could boost my Descent monster's ranks without buying duplicate copies of Descent. =)

Having read all I can on Runewars and watching the video, I don't see a similiarity between Runewars and WHFB at all. WHFB is a table top mini game. FFG put out Mutant Chronicles (Never played) which was more akin to a Table top mini game than anything else.

Runewars seems to be what they claim it to be...A Empire Building/conquest game, akin to Twilight Emperium, set in the fantasy setting of their other products (Rune Bound, which I have never played, and Decent, of which I am an avid fan!) When Descent was a common game I played, I had hoped for a real pen and paper RPG game of that ilk. However, I picked up WFRP last month, and am now a total convert into the Warhammer Fantasy RP system.

FFG just puts out so much cool crap, I am beside myself.

I don't think that he's saying RW is like WHFB, I think he's commenting on how this *could* be the first step in that direction. Sort like how HeroQuest became Advanced HeroQuest, which became Warhammer Quest, which became WHFB. RB -> RW -> ??? -> RWFB? (aka, Profit!)

as I said above, I don't necessarily think this is where FFG is going either, but I wouldn't mind it if it ended up happening.

That is exactly what I am saying. I do not think RW is going to be like WHFB. I do think it could lead to a Runewars Fantasy Battle type game, of which I would be a fan.

i hope it doesnt get a classical tabletop, where you spend hundreds of dollars for a few minis and also need a 30 page book for 50 dollars for each faction... that would suck big time !

just normal runewars with 1 (max 2) expansions and im totally happy. I´d never spend much money on a game again (MtG was my first love and became a hungry monster eating all my money :( )

But I think that the way FFG handles their current games could be ideal. Instead of hundreds (or in classic WHFB form, thounsands) of dollars, get several high quality plastic minis for a reasonable price. Look at RW, you get 200 minis and rules and dice and cards and bits for $99. So it doesn't seem like a stretch to get a fantasy battle army with 200 or so minis, their own rules, dice cards, bits etc for around $100. I would buy them...

I always wanted to play WHFB. But as many others, I have neither the money to invest in the armies or the time needed to cut out pieces and glue them together just to get up and running. I understand those aspects are a big part of what makes up the hobby of the game but its those very things that keep a lot of people from getting into it. I love Battlelore and always will but surely it has not lived up to its potential...at least not yet. I would also welcome a much more accessible 'WHFB' type game if FFG were to do that.

Got it. I can see how that with Descent, Runebound, runewars, it is conceivable that FFG turn it into a table top style game, like WHFB or Warmachine. I don;t know if I would collect such a game, though, I would think it is neat. Another style of game I am surprised that FFG has not tried using their Runewars/Descent/runebound world is one of thier LCGs. Both Warhammer Invasion and Game of Thrones are pretty neat games. Avid devourers of everything Descent like would sure to be fans of a LCG set in this story arc I am sure. I would consider it just for that alone.
