Hotshot Co Pilot

By Smaeks, in X-Wing Rules Questions

If i have focus token + TL, attacking a ship with Hotshot Co Pilot , rolling hit, hit , focus , do i have to spend the focus or can i choose to spend the TL first to keep the Focus token for a defense roll ?

OK so.

You can spend the TL first. But if you do, you STILL have to spend the focus, even if you have no eye symbols. You can do that, so you must. If you're attacking a HotCoP, and you have a focus, you can almost never end up keeping that focus.

The card still needs FAQing, but the answer to this question in particular is clear.

How to spend a token even if i have no use for it ?

So as u say i re roll with the TL and may have 3 hits after solving the effect i have to trash the token ?

But the card says , If able, so i have no eyeball and i am not able to spend it, i keep it for the defense roll .

That's how i read the card.

Page 11 of the Rules Reference 2nd bullet point under Focus

- A ship can spend a focus token even if it did not roll any [eye] results.

So you don't actually need to Roll eyeballs to spend a Focus

You can spend a focus token even if it changes zero eyeballs. Hotshot Copilot always forces your opponent to get rid of the focus token, unless some other game effect, such as Carnor Jax, prevents them from spending the token.

The if able is there, AFAICT, for two reasons:

1: You don't have one. If it tells you to spend something you don't have the game locks up.

2: Carnor Jax.

There's absolutely no question by RAQ as to whether you can spend a token when you have 0 results to modify - you can. Several separate FAQ entries (Garven, Keyan in particular) confirm this.

(The third is more ambiguous and needs FAQing, but Accuracy Corrector could also be used to create a game state where you can't spend the token - because it blocks the modification of dice and per the FAQ for Omega Leader, modifying 0 dice is still modifying dice - but whether you can activate it in this instance is still very much up for debate/FAQ)

Thanks guys.

Such an annoying card .

Argh ;)

Yeah, but it's 4 points so you pretty much have to build around it... TBD if that is a balancing factor.

It's also there for if you have already spent a focus token on that attack. It prevents you from spending more should you have extras lying around.
