Black Squadron
I would save the three points and take adaptability. You can go up to PS 8 when it will be helpful or drop down to 6 for better synergy with dark curse and backstabber. Then I would upgrade the academy pilot to wampa (at range 2-3 there is a 1 in 4 chance of getting a crit) and upgrade the stealth device to an engine upgrade. OR take the engine and leave the academy alone for an initiative bid
"Wampa" was at Endor, not Yavin (that's a Mon Cal in the background, not the Death Star). The last member of the Yavin roster is "Chaser" - which is good, because his ability pairs up well with Swarm Leader (evade as your action then snag someone else's focus when they shoot or evade).
Mauler Mithel's best Elite Upgrade is Snap Shot. Because his ability triggers whenever he attacks at range 1, his Snap Shot attacks are always 3 dice - which is actually moderately dangerous against a target who won't have had the chance to perform actions yet. Plus, if you get a snap shot, that also means a good chance of a 4-dice primary attack to follow. 7 dice from a TIE fighter in one combat round is pretty mean.
Unfortunately, you can't fit in both.
Vader really, really likes engine upgrade. With a high PS, and an ability which doesn't chain him to his wingmen, you can really open the taps on a TIE advanced's good white dial.
I want to try using the 'proper' Black Squadron myself. I think the best "swarm leader options I can see are:
- Chaser
- Dark Curse
- Backstabber
- Mauler Mithel - Trick Shot
- Darth Vader - TIE/x1, Swarm Leader, Advanced Targeting Computer, Engine Upgrade
Night Beast with Tie Mk2 might be a good option in this list. The free Focus on any green means you can more easily afford to feed Vader his Evade token.
I admit this is slightly breaking the "Black Squadron" theme but I think he is a good fit for the list.
