Happy Pagan Celebration Day

By Baaa, in X-Wing

It's the Winter Solstice; hence the title.

But (and I know you should never start a sentence with "but"), I was speaking to a good friend of mine who recently won a prestigious title in Attack Wing and he said something that piqued my interest.

Now, the gentleman in question has always played Attack Wing and for a long time played X-Wing, however, he gave it up.

Different game? No.

Different mechanics? In fleet building certainly. In other respects? Meh.

So why give up X-Wing? Because it's too easy to cheat in X-Wing.

Me? Flabbergasted.

I've never played Attack WIng, so why is his (and a few others I know who do) opinion of X-Wing so low?

Cheers

Too easy to cheat?

Too easy to cheat?

That's what the man said.

Now, he was no slouch at X-Wing when he played it either.

How so? Elaborate.

Too easy to cheat sounds like an excuse, not a legit complaint.

Its quite hard to cheat in this game if your opponent isnt a newbie. Subtle things like having your ship twisted ever so slightly when moving instead of dealing with that 5 degree twist i wouldnt label a game as too easy to cheat for. Other things like "Ha i just barely cleared the rock!" and pull your template away real quick as your base is literally touching the rock, but not on it, can EASILY label you a cheater even if it was true because you didnt let your opponent see if you were in the pegs right since you yanked the template away so fast.

Nah, quitting a game because its too easy to cheat would be a CS Go complaint. Not xwing.

I am just wondering why you waste your time and open a thread based on a statement of an obviously unknowing whiner?

Hey,

Don't get Leonidas on my arse!!!

I agree with what you've said, but he (and others) are adamant that it's an easier game to manipulate. I've seen the money these guys have pumped into Attack Wing and X-Wing and they are; for the most part, very forgiving of new players, so it surprises me that experienced TT gamers would have this opinion.

I kinda lied and know what their answer is (and it is surprisingly simplistic and honest) I'm just wondering what the communitiy's take on this is.

That pear.

Am I doing it right?

How is it more difficult to cheat in Attack Wing? I hardly know a thing about that game - isn't it just a kind of XWM with dragons? What specific difference was this person referring to?

Attack Wind had no debris. It was a straightforward battle. Feint, the equivalent of barrel roll, is rarely used. This may be why its harder to cheat.

Certain dragons like Ancient White were OP as was Adamantium Lance. Both were tournament exclusives. The game had less complexity. Perhaps this also made it harder to cheat.

There are slightly more tokens in X-Wing. Maybe that makes cheating easier.

I would like to know exactly why your friend feels that way? I probably know him because I played in Attack Wing regionals.

Your friend is a troll and this post is as well. My opinions of trolls are about as low as my opinion of Attack Wing.

I'm still waiting to find out the cheats.

Attack Wing could be Star Trek (which came out first) or DnD Attack Wing.

Can't cheat without an opponent.

Base colors change the outcome of the game:

Blue +1 shields

Red +1 auto crit dice

Green +1 evade

Purple +1 extra barrel roll

Orange unlimited illict upgrade uses.

Possible cheat methods:

Manipulating your movements by nudging/turning bases slightly

Adamantly using cards/upgrades in the wrong fashion (i.e. incorrect application)

Laying your movement templates out so you can easily judge movement

Cooked dice (Purely mythical, but I reckon people have tried)

Looking at your opponents dial when they go the bathroom

Telling your opponent their family has died in an explosion for a forfeit

All those things could be done in Attack Wing too.

Also how is having your templates laid out neatly where you can see them cheating? That's like saying that having bases is cheating as each template has an equivalent size in bases.

There's nothing wrong with laying your equipment out neatly, but I've played a fair few games in the past where opponents having been staring intently at the templates whilst picking their dial.

Cheating? Maybe not hard, but I'd argue it's not spirited either.

I mostly see that from newer players, and it's not something that bothers me at all. Each to their own.

Carefully looking at the templates to judge distance seems like the point of the game, I would encourage any player to do so.

I'd say carefully looking at the ships on the board is the point of the game, but like I say - not hard cheating.

Just manipulative in a way. I think the fun lies in the judgement of movement without reference. Especially when you pull off a very tight manoeuvre to your advantage.

In a certain light, it's like pre-measuring to me.

And how you are supposed to learn to jugde any maneuvers by just looking at ships...?

After hundreds if not thousands of games where i looked at the templates lying next to my cards, i can judge maneuvers without them but it took me like 3 years of playing Xwing to develop that skill.

Its got nothing to do with pre-measuring, and its perfectly legal by the rules and spirit of the game. As long as templates are off the game mat you can even stick them together to visualise something none should object about that. Its the skill to move those templates in your mind to the field that matters.
