So..."Thunderstruck" was a TIE advanced Squad since way back when:
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - Cluster Missiles
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - Cluster Missiles
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - Cluster Missiles
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - Cluster Missiles
Which was...okay but not amazing (yes, 8 3-dice attacks, but since they were unmodified it wasn't actually that much of an improvement over TIE fighters). It's got progressively better as first the TIE advanced, then ordnance in general, got improved:
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
This gives you four ships which, whilst not TIE/x7 defender tough, are not fragile either - not needing modifiers with their primary weapon, they are free to evade every turn, which combined with 2 shields and agility 3 puts them not far behind the more expensive defender in durability.
More importantly, cluster missiles and accuracy corrector are a match made in heaven, and can cause carnage against low (or zero) agility targets.
However, the problem with this squad was always its vulnerability to high agility targets: there are targets which can take 2-hit attacks for days, especially since deploying the cluster missiles means target locking and hence not evading, and hence potentially getting a ship blown away with missiles still unfired.
The problem with evade, of course, is that it's somewhat passive - if your opponent doesn't shoot you it's a wasted action, and you have no way to compel them to fire at you. However, you do now have the means to use those "wasted" evades with a Swarm Leader.
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector, Cluster Missiles, Guidance Chips
- Tempest Squadron Pilot - TIE/x1, Accuracy Corrector
AND
- Commander Alozen - TIE/x1, Swarm Leader, Advanced Targeting Computer
OR
- Zertik Strom - TIE/x1, Swarm Leader, Sensor Jammer
Alozen hits like a tonne of bricks at range 1 - 5 attack dice with focus plus a free critical or a reroll, whilst Strom is tougher to hurt, and takes away an opponent's range 1 bonus, allowing the rest of the squad to joust with much better armed opponents.
Not sure which would be better in practice.
