More Newbie Questions

By Pedro Lunaris, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hello!

I guess you are all pretty tired of answearibg newbie questions, but at the same time, it does seems to me that this forum is full of generous people. So I'll take my chances... :]

Just got the Core Set and Kings of the Sea box. We already tryied two 3 players melee game, 2 two players games, and one Kingsmoot game with 5 players! I'm looking forward to try the 4 player regular melee and the Two-and-two variant, but in this starting plays some questions appeared to us. To some of them I managed to find answares here in this forum, but not to others. They are:

1) When you kneel a character that has an attachment, the attachment kneels with it? We noticed some attachments that must be knelt to trigger some special effect, so I'm guessing that it will only be able to do that if the character with whom it is attached is standing. And I'm also guessing that, if you kneel just the attachment, the character remains standing. Is that correct?

2) In a situation where a character with Renown and without Deadly wins a challenge as the only defender against an attacker with Deadly, the defender character in question will be able to receive a Power Token before it must be killed by the Deadly keyword effect? I'm thinking that the game states that the first player to get 15 Power Tokens imediatly wins the game...

3) When you play an attachment to a character controled by other player, the attachment is considered to be in your control? I'm thinking about Poisoned Wine, as an example.

I guess that's it for now. Thanks!

Another thing!

4) The Creature that comes in KotS (the Shadowcat) has a creature crest that the creatures in the Core Set doesn't have. The creature crest is an additional crest, I'm thinking. Should I consider the Core Set creatures as having it as well?

5) And in KotS there are some Kingdom cards. They don't have the map pattern behind their title, but I'm guessing they are locations. Tzumainn categorizes them as locations, anyway. Is that right? Are there some specific rule related to them, or some diferenciation?

Thanks again!

No worries. We were all newbies once. Welcome to the game.

Actually, all cards kneel - and stand - independently of each other. When the character kneels, the attachment does not - and vice versa. For example, say that you have Lightbringer (Vigilant, kneel to save attached character) on Robert Baratheon. You kneel Robert to defend a military challenge. Lightbringer stays standing, so if you lose that military challenge, you can choose to kill Robert for claim, then kneel Lightbringer to save him. Later in the phase, you attack with Renly Baratheon and win. Since you won a challenge as the attacker, you would stand Lightbringer - but not Robert - because the attachment is Vigilant.

Correct. Renown is awarded before Deadly is resolved and if that Renown was power #15, the game is over before the character dies. This sort of interaction/situation is just the beginning. Eventually, you will get to situations that require an advanced interpretation of the basic timing rules. I'd invite you to look through the FAQ for a much more detailed explanation of the advanced timing quirks you will find in this game.

Yes. Cards you own are always under your control unless an effect specifically changes said control. So in the case of Poison Wine, your opponent can't say "it's on my character, so I control it and can trigger its 'move' effect to get it off my character."

No. That is not the "Creature" crest. It is the "Shadows" crest (note that the character The Silent Sisters have it, too - and they are certainly not creatures). The crest was introduced in some of the Chapter Packs, after the Core Set came out. The rules for cards with the Shadows crest can be found here in the game's support section.

They are locations and no, there are no special rules related to them. Treat them the same as you would treat any other location. The difference is cosmetic only, but helpful because there are cards, especially in the Clash of Arms Chapter Packs, that interact with Kingdom locations in pretty significant ways, so it is nice to have an easy visual cue to see which ones they are. The visual difference also helps highlight the fact that many Kingdom locations actually have all 6 House affiliations - so you can play them in any deck without a gold penalty.

Thank you very much, ktom! That brings a shining light to my group! May you keep forging AGoT rings to your maester chain!

The game will change a lot when we stop kneeling attachments with the attached character and I haven't realized the meaning of the shadows crest. I had read the shadows rules, but since I didn't buy the King's Landing CP yet, we are not using them. I'm suggesting that the player that uses the GJ deck pays 2 gold for the shadow cards that cost 0 to get out of shadows (it would be 1 gold plus the shadow value if the value were more than 0). I just thought of it as a house rule to prevent just one deck of using the shadow rules.

Another question:

Regarding the card "Titan's Bastard". One of it's abilities is: "Response: After a card is placed in an opponent's dead pile, return The Titan's Bastard to its owner's hand." This ability works if The Titan's Bastard is at the dead pile?

This question appeared when I played the "Valar Morghulis" plot. Titan's Bastard was in play, and my friend playing tthe Targaryen deck asked if this situation didn't triggered the Response. It seemed to me that this Response could only be triggered if Titan's was in play, and the dead pile is not considered "in play". But, on the other hand, Titan's ability doesn't states anything about where the Titan's must be to trigger this response...

First, remember that response is always optional.

No card ability works if card is not in play (unless otherwise specified e.g. "Forever burning")

This is often counterintuitive for some people because in many other card-based games, if the effect doesn't expressly forbid it, it is legal.

But in this game, the "default" is that if the effect doesn't expressly allow it, it is illegal. Hence, Rogue's answer of "no card ability works if the card is not in play (unless otherwise specified)."

So yeah, the Titan's ability doesn't say anything about where the Titan must be in order to trigger the Response because the basic rules of the game say he must be in play. Note that his other Response (the one that puts him into play from your hand) works from your hand because it says it does.

Alright, thank you both, Rogue and ktom!

It amazes me a little to realize that AGoT's rulebook doesn't seem enough to explain all the game's complexity. But it really seems cool to me to have to come here and exchange messages with people willing to answear newbie questions, while also trying to conduct a good strategy conversation and information about local gamer's communities. It seems that AGoT LCG was released organicaly basing itself in the community of players that the CCG originated.

To me, it's an important thing to notice, since I'm playing AGoT in the southest state of Brazil, and even if I am residing in the state's capital, my guess is I'm the only one who owns any AGoT card. So it's a great thing thing to have a supportive web community. And it doesn't hurt to have a lot of good friends very interested in RPG and games like the only game that matters.

Hi, Pal.

I'm in Rio Grande do Sul too.

I have interest in playing CoC LCG, what do you think?

Nice to hear from you, man!

I'm interested in playing it too, but not in buying it. As we pay a large amount of post fees, and are subject to games taxation, I'm only interested in buying AGoT right now. But I have a very dear friend who is thinking in buying CoC LCG, I can get you to contact!
