What is the best way to Ionize?

By JoeyBriefcase, in X-Wing

It seems like Ion is a better limiter against defenders, dengaroo, and shadowcasters. I don't know how to actually get someone with it. Rebels probably have the best way with Conner net K-Wings. Scum doesn't really give it to anyone but themselves (4-LOM and Feedback Array) and Imperials have loys of missile slots for Ion Pulse Missiles and the occasional Ion Cannon Defender.

Conner net.

Scum have Ion Scyks which for 23 points with Mindlink are pretty solid focus monkey/snipers. Maybe not QUITE there yet but I've been having some decent success with them.

blount is the best way to ionize.

There is also Ion Pulse z-95s as well. 15 pts with GC

The Quad jumper could be a good bomber for connor nets as well.

Don't forget Ion Torpedoes. Probably over-priced but 4 red dice and an ion token on the target and everyone else at Range 1 of it makes for a good opening strike.

Conner Net is a pretty good way to do it, so is an Blount Deadeye IPM.

The best ion token is the ion token accompanied by a stress token, in most cases the ion duplicates the stress.

Blount + stresshog can bring the fear even against x7 defenders.

With the Ion Pulse missile and Deadeye to be exact. Pretty much a guarantee although the big problem there is no repeatability.

Blount with IPM was one of my go-to Fel killers for a while (back in the days of SD/HU Fel builds). It also did a number on the likes of Corran and Whisper, and was generally outrageously useful for that one if you hit it right (Whisper ioned onto a rock/debris? Glorious).

I wouldn't discount the Hwk with an ICT for Scum. I took Palob with one to regionals last year and won. Threw 4-LOM and Crackshot onto him, and there literally wasn't an ace I couldn't murderise if he came within range of me. The sheer number of PalpAces lists that he screwed with was phenomenal, especially any PTL ones. Even Torkil is a decent shout, giving you nice AoE pseudo-control.

As for Imperials, they have plenty of slots for ion weapons, but they're generally not used because it's often more points efficient to look elsewhere. Deathfire with Connor Nets is an obvious one, but beyond that you'll likely get better use from the points elsewhere.

That said, I've had some fun with Ion Cannons on a Lambda with FCS and Vader, shoved in behind a TB Vessery/D. Not exactly the most competitive use of Defenders, but it's amusing to watch Vessery tractor his target in front of a rock, and let the Lambda's ions take care of the rest.

Has anyone trialed a TIE Defender with an Ion Cannon and Hux in the list somewhere? You take a big risk by putting Fanatical Devotion on a Defender/Points PiƱata, but the potential to put through an unblockable Ion shot might have potential.

Ten Numb, Calculation, Ion Cannon.

How'd you drop the Conner with that stress, Chopper?

I've been flying a Scimitar bomber with LRS and a single ion pulse to pretty good effect, even vs X7 palp defenders. 19 points for a full mod attack after your squadmates strip tokens. Once the missile is spent he falls way down on enemy attack priority too, letting you use him as a tanky blocker. Also has the added threat to ptl aces since they don't want to be ionized while carrying their own stress.

Ways to Ionize:

  • Ion Bomb
  • Ion Cannon
  • Ion Torpedo
  • Ion Turret
  • Conner Net

Lots of ways for all factions to ionize someone. What's the best? Blount, as others have stated, as he can't miss. Scum have plenty of methods for Ionizing, though.. A Y-wing can do all of the above, except the Ion Cannon.

You cant miss conners either

Unless you **** up

Gotta go with Connor net as the best way to do it:

Just because there's no RNG involved.

That and the fact that you can also use your Conner nets as area denial if you want to.

But that is a gross generalization; all of the ionization methods in the game have merit, and they're (mostly) all perfectly viable depending on what you want to run in your squad, how they fit in, and how many points you have to spare.

One of my favourite lists packs an ion cannon turret on the Ghost (of all things). The ion turret not generally something which gets a lot of love... But for some reason, in that list it fits & it works, and people hate going up against it.

Don't forget Ion Torpedoes. Probably over-priced but 4 red dice and an ion token on the target and everyone else at Range 1 of it makes for a good opening strike.

the beauty of this one is Ion Torps are generally considered trash, so nobody ever thinks about it. I brought it once and managed to ion 3 ships because my opponent completely forgot i had ion TORPEDOS and not MISSILES lol.

In terms of Defenders, connernets are best becuase they cant evade them. 3agi ships especially with an evade/focus are dang near impossible to tag with an ion weapon, though usually you will force tokens to be spent because getting ioned is bad juju. I'd rather take 2 damage than be ioned.

Just don't go too heavy on ion or you'll do too little damage, Blount is not great honestly he's very prone to blowing up before ever firing a shot, nets are a solid choice though.

Emon Azzameen with Connors, EM, and tail gunner sounds fun, just haven't gotten around to trying it yet. Can also add burnout SLAM and Advance SLAM for some extra funsies. Itd be a one time thing that costs 3 points, but the amount of shenanigans to be had would be first class. You'd be able to do a 4 forward then 4K (with a big base) then drop a bomb with a 3 template haha

4 Thugs with ion turret and title and r4 aggromech

Or 4 ion scyks and a single tlt thug.
