Naterlilli Customs

By Refugeanoth, in X-Wing Painting and Modification

I saw that the vast majority of folks seem to make a thread collecting all their work, so I figured I'd join in! Just started painting a couple of months ago with Heroes of the Aturi cluster being the thing that really set off a creative spark in me. Had alot of help learning from some very VERY tough teachers in the /tg/ wip thread on 4chan but ultimately I think it really improved the quality of the stuff I put out (THIN YOUR PAINTS!!!)

I'll post them in the order I made them. Enjoy!

My first paintjob was a bit of a mess. My thinking was that it's a K-wing, so it's not like I can make it any more ugly than it already is! I feel like alot of the ffg models aren't dirty enough or lived in enough out of the box, so I went for full-on-filthy with this space pig. Even tried to make some bizarre red and black camo patterns. Turned out not all that bad for my first ever attempt, but there was nowhere to go from there but up!

My first attempt at layered paints on this firespray. Went back later and applied some ardcoat to the canopy to take away the graininess. Also used my first citadel dry paints and oxide for a rusty effect on the bronze plating.

By the time I was at this Y-wing I was working hard on thinning my paints down as much as possible and doing multiple layers of thin paint instead of a single thick coat. Takes alot longer, but the results are much cleaner lines and better color depth in the end.

The Scrapshoot was the first model I altered in any way and It's probably the model I've spent the most time on since I started painting. Seems like there's always something I find on the ship that I want to touch up or change in some way, but it's current iteration is this. Used alot of mixing, dry's, washes and scratching down through the layers with a wire brush to achieve some real gnarly looking weathering. Also ended up using jewelshade on the engines and the canopy glass which is so shiny and reflective in the light that it just pops off the table!

The Moldy Crow never felt quite moldy enough for its name. Thus, the Moldiest Crow was born :P

This was achieved using a white holographic paint and varnish that I stripped with a very light coat of grain alcohol. Dulled the colors down to where I wanted them, then put some midnight blue and electric blue on the striping. Turned out very pretty in the end.

Used a similar technique to the HWK on my first B-wing paint job with the paint-peeled look and the stripping around the edges of the individual hull plates. I'm probably gonna go back to this one and apply some decals since it's basically flat white, but for now it looks serviceable on the table.

This was accomplished using nothing but washes and a single layer of very thin metallic paint on select panels. One of the only ones I did this way, but it showed me how the models react to multiple layers of wash. It stains them almost like an ink.

Love that Y-Wing, one of the best schemes I've seen for bringing out the surface detail, especially on the engine pods!

Third B-wing was done like it was pieced together from other B-wing parts. I even gave it different colors for it's engines in the back. Really looks cool on the table.

My first T-70. Found this model to be really receptive to washes. Used those, some jewelshade, nuln oil and Ardcoat and took around an hour to do. Very quick and clean and easy.

Did a little bit of camo on the engines too. Found out later that the colors on this are the same as on the Armenian flag. Thus she was called Blyat 1 from then on lol

Made this to correspond to the beginning of our HOTAC campaign. In our story, she's a B1 battledroid that escaped the imperial kill signal by being inside a rayshielded cargo container that stopped the shutdown command, but could not stop the memory wipe protocol from reaching her. It was jettisoned from a republic cruiser the separatist detachment she was a part of was attacking. The container was full of power packs she used to keep herself alive, along with republic AI flight protocols for training its pilots. The cargo container drifted for over a decade, during which time, the battledroid was alone with its thoughts and the ai flight protocols, which it downloaded and learned and played over and over and over again through its droid brain. Only having tidbits of transmissions reaching through the cargo containers walls to teach her about the outside world, The droid adopted the name ZERO ONE based on the most persistent sound it could hear (that of its own processes) and was discovered by a rebel scouting party in the Aturi cluster. The droid turned out to have become extremely adept at piloting virtually any ship it could fit in thanks to the ai protocols that had burned into its programming and was integrated into the rebel strike cell known as the Aturi Irregulars.

Second K-wing I did was done up in 70's era colors. Wanted it to look like the era that the movies came out of!

Two firsts here. A scum ship for our hotac lambda shuttle hunter and a pair of royal guard tie fighters. Did the ties in a basic red wash and ruby jewelshade. The fighter was done with some blue metallic paint and silver brushing on the edges.along with more red wash.

Did all the blue on this X-wing with azure jewelshade and lothal blue mixed together. Used alot of nuln oil and some holographic gold for the accents. Very quick and easy.

First assembled irregular squadron picture. The X-wing I did for a friend in Green ranger colors. The big gun equipped Y-wing was done for another buddy.

Found a really cool combo of colors to make a deep and vibrant white that was really well accented by the red jewelshade on this, Our HOTAC pilot callsign: "Jury"

Also, this was the first ship I went for some freehand designs and patterns.

15326387_10211209991027870_8763279032065

Combined alot of different stuff into this ship. Found out that furniture markers are perfect for drawing patterns on wing leading edges and they come out nice and shiny with no need for ardcoat. Tons of different colors for those markers if you look around and they look fantastic on the models!

Updated HOTAC group all together!

And we're all caught up with the ARC-X1! Went for a steampunk look with this ship and made it for a custom recovery mission in HOTAC.

Made these in photoshop so our pilots would have their own ships and custom loadouts on their cards.

And with that we're current! Got a few BIG projects on the horizon. I'm looking at you armada fleet :(

Love that Y-Wing, one of the best schemes I've seen for bringing out the surface detail, especially on the engine pods!

Thank you! It was actually pretty cool how that worked. Heavily watered down gold paint that I dripped onto the top of the cones and let seep down in between the little detailed parts, then I put some nuln oil on it and did it again until it had something akin to tree rings from where the paint dried. Then I applied some ardcoat and the rest is history!

My favorite of the bunch is the black B-wing. It has a mean, stealthy look to it!

Good! because that's my personal ship in hotac! haha
