Sato: Making The Carriers' Guns Relevant

By Ardaedhel, in Star Wars: Armada

So, I played a game last night with a Sato proxy. I ran Paragon, Salvation, an MC30T, and two GR-75's with A-wings, against a rebel X/Y bomber wing supported by AF2's and GR-75's.

Power-wise he was alright. Definitely going to take some practice to learn to use him well, I made many mistakes. Won, but just barely.

One thing that ready stuck out to me though was the feel of the fleet. The guns on Paragon were mean. More than just a standoff carrier that might get lucky every once in a while, an AF2 with OE taking Sato shots is putting out some serious threat.

I was pretty excited about this feel in the context of some of the concerns people have been having recently about starfighters taking over the spotlight from capital ships. It really felt like a combined arms fleet instead of the carriers just sitting back as activation ******* for the fighters. Obviously, this wasn't really built as a bomber fleet, but as people start to refine these kinds of fleets, we'll figure that piece out. The important thing here is that the feel is good.

Also, as a side note, my concerns about it being over-costed for the non-reroll interpretation have been allayed. He's still good.

I also have a Sato fleet with Paragon, Salvation, 2 CR90s and 2 GR-75s. Running Tycho, Shara, 2 A-Wings and 2 VCX.

Objectives are Targeting Beacons, Fire Lanes and Sensor Net. GR-75s can activate my squads through Relay, and I can move the tokens so I am getting VP or rerolls.

It is very swingy with the damage output and I'm trying to figure out a way to fix that, but man is it fun to play. It feels like a cohesive Rebel fleet that has thrown together a bunch of random garbage to fight the Empire. Very thematic and fun.

I do like to hear that you had success with Paragon. That is a ship I have been trying to make work for a while, and it never felt that potent. Did you use the MKIIA, or the B? Also, any turbolaser upgrade?

Been thinking about putting together a Gallant Haven list with him - put Rapid Launch Bays on the AF, dump 2 B-wings and a VCX next to your target then try and keep the AF alive whilst using Sato to give all your other ships Black dice at long range and Yavaris to double tap the B-wings. Not sure on how to protect the B-wings against fighters yet though...probably Jan.

I used an AF2A with IO, Paragon, OE, and ECM. IO was worth it in combination with Salvation's IO; paragon never went off but was worth it for the threat (it definitely influenced his flying), OE was worth a few extra points of damage, and ECM want applicable this game cause paragon never ate a shot.

I love this fleet as an early wave "try a bit of everything cuz new toys" fleet. How did strategic work out for you?

Sato AFs with OE are something I was expecting would be surprisingly good for their points; it's nice to hear that is playing out, Ard - thanks for posting that, man.

Next question: is it worth taking the armed transport with Sato? You could CF into two blacks with a freaking flotilla if you wanted...

I've only played Fire Lanes, but being able to steal those things and put them out of arc, or better yet out of range, is incredibly powerful. The CR90s maneuverability pairs very nice with Strategic because I can make my decisions on the fly and don't need to plan too much.

I want to get my hands on the actual models and stop proxy, but it's a very flexible fleet.

I agree with Ard about Paragon. It's very hard to get off when your opponent realizes they will be taking 3 blacks with OE. But 5 points that changes how your opponent flies? Well worth it.

That's a cool idea too, Reinholt, I'll be interested to see how it goes.

Also, forgot to mention: MC30's throwing six blacks out a side arc with XI7 is every single bit as ridiculous as I'd hoped they would be. :D

This sounds brutal!

It also definitely sounds fun to field. I'm sure for the first two weeks in January, I'll be tossing together some Sato lists.

I was saying it was definitely not replace after rolling. But nooooooooo, just had to rules lawyer

It was ambiguous enough that they rewrote the card before release.

Now its not.

No-one "Won" that Argument.

I took it from the stance of power balance, it didn't cost enough to do what people were hoping it would do by replacing blanks. Didn't make mathematical sense compared to ackbar.

I dunno, it was pretty clear what it should have been for game health. But no, some people want min-maxing power gaming.

Also, who said anything about winning?

Did you lose

As per usual, I argued both sides of the argument. It was ambiguous.

I tried a similar Sato list Thursday night and he can make the Rebel Fleet SING if done well. I had Han, Tycho, and a HWK in there to ensure i was getting Sato ability, but i will fully agree with Ard about XI7s on a MC30 and 6 black dice out the side. Such fun, much death dealing. I also had a Phoenix Home with Entrapment Formation in there and oh my gosh that card is insane. My speed was juking all over the place with all my ships. I took an assault frigate from speed 2 to speed 0 and then back up the next turn. My MC30 went 3 to 1 to 3 again. SO CRAZY!

My Sato List and Wave 5
Points: 399/400

Commander: Commander Sato

Modified Pelta-class Assault Ship (56 points), Engine Techs ( 8 points), Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points), Shields to Max (6 Points) 75 total ship cost

Modified Pelta-class Assault Ship (56 points), Commander Sato ( 32 points), Engine Techs ( 8 points), Assault Proton Torpedoes ( 5 points) 101 points

GR-75 Medium Transports (18 points), Comms Net ( 2 points), 20 total ship cost

4 Lancer-class Pursuit Crafts ( 60 points)
1 YT-2400 ( 16 points)
1 Hera Syndulla ( 28 points)
1 Jan Ors ( 19 points)
1 A-Wing Squadron ( 11 points)

I quite like the Pelta with the Engine Techs, a II,I,II or II,II on a small ship with the ability to do inside turns as much as anything.

I have taken Hera, as to give all the squadrons Rogue and a bit of rouge too, as her cheeks always

Gee. I sure don't remember that.

Also, if you argue both sides, then does that mean you lose twice?

Neither win or lose.

What is your point? Spit it out

I think he responds condescendingly and arrogantly to people who have differing views from him in a beatdown "I'm right" type of way.

Whilst you claim to be prophetic in the glory of hindsight?

There is no need for any of this.

Dras isnt condescending, most of the time he is outright unemotional, it just appears that way.

Well, I don't think you need to be emotional to be condescending. In fact, a lot of very "to the point" people use that as an excuse to be demeaning to others and then pass blame when someone has a problem with it.
