Statting out K-2S0 [Rogue One Spoilers!]

By FuriousGuy, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi guys! If you wanted to make K-2S0 as an EotE character (or AoR), how would you stat him out? Here's my attempt to make him as a starting character:

Brawn 3 - He can toss stormtroopers around, and it takes a few blaster hits before he goes down. 3 is "strong as a Wookiee" and I don't have enough XP to go to 4, so that will have to do.

Agility 2 - He can hit with a blaster, but he doesn't seem especially agile (but certainly more agile than, say, C3P0).

Intellect 3 - He can calculate unfavorable odds quite quickly! He also handles astrogation for Captain Andor.

Cunning 2 - He is a terrible liar, but he does notice some things, so I'll chalk the bad lie up to a bad roll.

Willpower 2 - He defers to Captain Andor most of the time, but he can disobey when he wants to.

Presence 2 - He's likable, but not a dynamo of personal magnetism.

He has to take 5 extra obligation so he can afford those stats, of course. Man, droids get the shaft!

As for Career/Spec, how about Hired Gun / Enforcer! I read that his series are called Enforcer droids, so that fits. Plus he's large and intimidating, and when he gets the Loom talent, he'll come in handy for social encounters too.

What would you guys do differently?

He's not a starting character. You could go knight level+ if you want to emulate him.

Also dropping Wil, Presence, and/or Cunning to 1 would be appropriate You could give him token skill ranks in Perception, Vigilance, and Charm

With regards to droids getting "the shaft" id disagree, they do get a lot of advantages (for example even K points out," you will die, I can survive in a vacuum")

It depends on whether you want to do him as a PC or an NPC. Doing him as an NPC would be much easier, since you could just give him whatever is necessary to make the character concept work.

But you could also do a PC build.

It might be interesting to see what that looks like as a starting PC versus as a Knight-level build that is more fully fleshed out.

Also dropping Wil, Presence, and/or Cunning to 1 would be appropriate You could give him token skill ranks in Perception, Vigilance, and Charm

That's a good idea. Then he could have Brawn 4, which I think fits a bit better. Unfortunately Enforcer only gets Vigilance as a class skill, but I suppose if the movie character has advanced a bit, then he could have picked up some ranks of those skills along the way.

That is no benefit at all. Your GM is not going to space the entire party leaving your droid functional and killing everyone else, and even if that happened, a droid character would still be effectively killed, floating out in space until it falls into a gravity well or something (excepting droids with built in maneuvering thrusters of course).

Similarly, while there are certain weapons droids are immune to (poison gas perhaps), there are also weapons to which they are uniquely vulnerable (ion). The Force power immunity is quite limited (Move still crushes you, etc.) and is easily offset by not being eligible to obtain Force powers, which are some of the most powerful abilities characters can have. In short, there are narrative differences between droids and organics, and skillful GMs will call out these differences now and then, but their situational narrative advantages are just not worth the huge mechanical disadvantage droids have.

The only reason for it that I can see is that organics created droids to be slaves, so they purposely made them to be inferior. That may be good from an in-universe realism perspective but kinda sucks for playing an RPG.

While we're at it, giving a Gand +10 XP for having lungs basically requires the GM to take that Gand's air filter away at some point to make him pay for it.

Unfortunately Enforcer only gets Vigilance as a class skill,

You could always keep him at STR 3 and use the extra 40 points to buy some skill ranks

Droids are designed to be Hyperspecialists. Where they only have 1 or 2 stats at 4 and the rest at 1. If you are building a droid in this system to be close to the 2 2 2 2 2 2 human base line, then be better then a human, you are not doing it properly.

I would stat him as a straight up Technician Mechanic. That combination gets him Astrogation, Computers, Mechanics, Brawl (which seems to be his go-to combat skill), and Piloting (Space), which covers most everything we see him do, plus Enduring, Toughened, and Hard-Headed for continuing to function even after sustaining heavy damage. That also gives him Perception as a career skill, if you want to leave his Cunning low and still have him notice things. That only leaves off Ranged (Light) and Knowledge (Warfare), if you want to use the latter for his strategic analysis, but that seems more like character flavor than an ability that he actually rolls to influence the plot.

You sound like you have never had a droid at you table. The not breathing, sleeping or eating is invaluable.NPCs attack PCs with gas; combat droid PC stays up front shooting while the others are forced to retreat and regroup. Camping in a jungle; Droid PC stays up all night on guard watching for threats. Party doesn't get horrifically ambushed because droids don't need to sleep. Boarding a wrecked ship with no life support? Send the droid! There is a million things a droid PC can do with that bonus. It's down to having a clever player to be able to use them and a good GM to be able to roll with it and provide opportunities.

Droids are also able to get away with silly things like facing Boba Fett in the back room of a Hutt’s fortress, and making a pest of themselves and painting a bright target on their chestplate by saying stuff like:

Boba Fett?!? THE Boba Fett?!? The Mr. Boba Fett, Sir?!?

Is that really you, sir?!?

Mr. Boba Fett! Sir! I’ve always wanted to meet you, sir!

Mr. Boba Fett! Sir! Will you autograph ...

Then after Boba Fett gets irritated enough and shoots at you just to shut you up [1], another PC can take a called shot and blast the gun out of his hands.

[1]: Yes, even Boba Fett can be annoyed and irritated enough to actually miss his target. You should have seen the dice, and the look on the GM’s face when Boba Fett actually managed to miss his target….

But droids do sometimes need to shut down and recharge.

Not at the same rate at which humans need to drink, eat and sleep.. They have a great advantage but don't get totally OP. They are actually brilliantly balanced IMO.

I definitely agree with you here. It's a significant balance using the Narrative side of this system. Sure they look lacking in the Crunch, but there is so much beyond that.

I think his skills with ranged light weapons comes from skill ranks; the bulky droid form isn't naturally dis-positioned to wielding weapons but he is programmed to wield them.

Alternatively, he is a NPC with elimination directives which gives him 4 skill ranks in three combat skills, DM tinkers with it to give him 4 ranks in knowledge warfare (which is probably what he had before his conversion) and call it a job done. His general behavour suggested that he was a NPC companion rather then a full blown PC in his own right, reflected in how he often stays with the ship and is doing background things and turns up like a GM PC when situations get really scary.

I'll put my hat in the ring for the Engineer Mechanic, it covers so much of what he does from shooting and brawling through fixing ships, copiloting, slicing and being tough. But Ace Driver also fits extremely well, with a reliance on high Brawn to account for his Brawl, and out of career Computers ranks for that.

For characteristics I would start him at 4,2,3,1,2,1. The Willpower is my biggest question, it could be a 1 as well since he basically does what he is told. I feel like there are ranks in Mechanics, Computers, knowledge warfare, and Piloting. Some Solid Repairs and Gearhead too.

Ultimately he needs to increase that Intellect to 4 and perhaps Agility to 3, either through Dedication, or better yet Cybernetics to replicate the reprogramming that has gone on. 3 ranks in Ranged Light would fit as well (Cas probably knew just how good he was with a pistol, but didn't want to risk K making an unfortunately timed statistical analysis of a situation leading to an unwanted gunfight.)

The rest is down to a player with a sense of humour, quick wits, a solid concept and trust with the other players.

"Oh, this is going to be fun. I wonder what mess I'll have to clean up this time?"

"Our chances of getting into this station are approximately going to be...why am I even telling you this? We're going in anyway, aren't we?"

"Congratulations. You have been drafted into the Rebellion. Enjoy what few months of life you have left."

"Why am I in charge of getting us in? Oh yes, it's because I still have my old coat of paint, isn't it? Bunch of droidcists."

"You're lucky I've been reprogrammed. I would've disintegrated the lot of you ages ago. Not because I was an imperial, but because you are illogical and annoying."

"I'm not paid enough for this. It's because I'm a droid, isn't it?"

Sorry, I just had to spitball the sort of lines that this character would say in other adventures. :P

He was apparently an analyst for the Empire before being reprogrammed. Whether he was what the spec Analyst considers an analyst or if it was some other role in analysis is the question though, and while he may have been used in analysis that might not be what his droid-type is traditionally built for. Analyst is a spec for the career Diplomat as well, and I don't see K-2SO as a diplomat obviously (though of course his reprogramming may have screwed that up possibly? Cassian claims he talks the way he does as a side effect of the reprogramming after all). He seems to have both technical skills and fighting skills, though the latter we only see him brawling really apart from one blaster shot. He also flies the U-wing and also does astrogation, made clear when he doesn't make the jump to lightspeed on Jedha because he hasn't finished his calculations.

My guess is that he has specs that give him both slicing abilities (we see him hack another droid's brain and he operates a lot of computer terminals) and ship skills (piloting, astrogation). Which ones in particular and which career he started as I don't know however.
