Off-Topic vs On-Topic

By Crabbok, in X-Wing Off-Topic

The "Topic" is X-Wing Miniatures Game. If you are making a post about X-Wing Miniatures Game, this is considered to be "On-Topic" and doesn't belong in the Off Topic section. You can make it in the general X-Wing Miniatures forum and stand tall and proud, knowing that you have created a topic in an approved section. You can even post in a specific sub-section if your post meets that criteria, for example a battle report, or list idea... etc.

If you have a post about something that is NOT about X-Wing miniatures game specifically... you might consider the Off-Topic section. Maybe you are looking for a good book, or want to talk about your favorite Ninja Turtle or Thundercat.

Or maybe you still want to talk about Star Wars, just not specifically this game. Like maybe you want to talk about Rogue One. That would be cool, but it should be Off-Topic.

The sheer number of Rogue One threads springing up in the general X-Wing miniatures discussion is baffling. Also baffling is the number of ON-TOPIC posts that get made in the off-topic section. I could complain more about them, but then I'd just come off as even more of a grumpy old man.

May the force be with you all.

Yes, THANK YOU. I was really annoyed at all the Rogue One threads. It's Star Wars, but it's still 'Off-Topic' as the topic is what you state it to be.

Tried making this argument a couple months ago. People, for some reason, don't seem to understand how forums are supposed to work and think that this is a reddit.

Yes the Rogue One topics should be in Off Topic, but discussions of Star Wars in general have always been allowed in the main form, that may just be a lack of moderation or maybe FFG feels that discussing Star Wars is fine on the main forum.

People, for some reason, don't seem to understand how forums are supposed to work and think that this is a reddit.

Forums work however the owner of them want them to work. Just because some people think general Star Wars belongs in Off Topic doesn't mean the owners do, and given the lack of any sort of action by them to move those threads that means they either don't care or are fine with those discussions being there.

So until the mods start to move those threads, then they are fine with where they are.

^ and this line of reasoning I heard. "Well, the mods haven't said we must use the subforums so its ok that everything goes in the main page". The annoying part is a lot of those same people complain that people don't critique their lists or answer rules questions... (not you Vanor)

The owner of these forums made subforums... probably to be used. But, I have resigned myself to this just being the way that this community is. The forum here is EXTREMELY lightly modded, though a stickied post encouraging sub forum use would be a huge step.

I agree, and I think that Rogue One and other general Star Wars stuff should go here. And threads about a given list, or about a rule should go in the appropriate sub-forum.

But, I have resigned myself to this just being the way that this community is.

It is. Whether it should be or shouldn't, general star wars topics like movies or the TV show rebels has a home on the main forum, and I don't think much is going to change that.

I think the problem is a small mod team and a lot of forums.

when i asked Evan to set up painting and off topic as sub forum, i suggested the idea of 'player mods'.. namely long standing forum users with sensible attitudes and no warning points.

They were not up for it.

So you're right until mods start moving stuff we'll have stuff in the wrong places.

(i didnt suggest myself as a player mod btw :) )

I used to like turkey spam.

I'm not saying it's not "allowed". I'm just saying... it irks me just a little.

Same when someone posts in Off Topic asking "What X-Wing expansion should I get next?" - I just wanna ask "WHY?!?!?! - WHY do you post this in Off Topic?!?!?! How could you POSSIBLY have thought this was too far off topic for the general forum?!?!?!"

But I don't reply like that because that's a downer... so I just bundle in all my frustration for like a year or two and eventually make a thread like this.

I can FEEL your anger. Your hate has made you powerful. Now fulfill your destiny!

I feel... more powerful? As if I could use this power for good! Yesss! Use it for good! And Righteousness! I shall cleanse the impure! I will bring goodness to the galaxy!

With so many Star Wars games, FFG should really make a dedicated section for them all, and give them one Off Topic for all of them to share.

The main website separates the products by IP, rearranging the forums accordingly would be a logical step further (and then putting the older games in a discontinued games section)

FFG should really make a dedicated section for them all, and give them one Off Topic for all of them to share.

Or just a general Star Wars forum, something dedicated to any topic that isn't about a given game, but the rest of the IP like movies, TV shows, books, comics ect..

Star Wars general would make a lot more sense than giving the other boards no one except a small group to use. I only use the X-Wing board unless I need solid fluff or background info. Then I head to EoTE where more useful players are.

It'd also help circumvent the amount of Rebels topics which are equally as irrelevant as the RO posts.

Ironic that the post explaining how to make on-topic posts has been moved to the off-topic forum.

This one was always in the off topic forum

The greatest battles of our time:

Jedi vs Sith

T-rex vs Triceretops

Picard vs Janeway

Off-topic vs On-topic

Unfortunately we will never know the answer to that last one.

Please, Balrog: wings or no wings? Rumble is Red, Frenzy is Blue or vice versa.

Those are the great battles of our time
