Please Critique My List!!!

By picklesBswoopin, in X-Wing Squad Lists

As we all know, the Heroes of the Resistance expansion released recently. I wanted to make a list with PS9 Poe Dameron. One of my favorite ships is the T-70, mostly because of how maneuverable you can make them. I'm still some what new to X-Wing and have yet to play a match with someone who actually knows what they are doing. I put this list together in hopes that it will actually be a competitive list. I consider it the best one I have put together so far. I would love feedback from you guys; good and bad. And please explain why something is good or bad.

Poe Dameron (PS9)

- Black One

- BB-8

- Primed Thrusters

Red Squadron Veteran (T-70)

- Trick Shot

- Seismic Torpedo

- Pattern Analyzer

- Vectored Thrusters

Red Squadron Veteran (T-70)

- Trick Shot

- Pattern Analyzer

- Vectored Thrusters

Total of 99 points

I'm a little iffy on the Seismic Torpedo for the first Red Squadron Veteran. I kinda threw that in as an after thought in an attempt to get a little extra potential damage since I had some squad points left over.

Drop the Seismic Torps for sure and look for an EPT for Poe.

Red Squadron Veteran (T-70)

- Trick Shot

- Pattern Analyzer

- Vectored Thrusters

Looks.... a little confused.

  • Having Boost & Barrel Roll as options is nice.
  • Only having one option means you can only do one, and doing so costs you your dice modifiers when attacking and defending
  • If you take pattern analyser, that matters if you're doing red moves a lot (move, action, gain stress), or you're doing green moves with Push The limit (move, action, action, lose stress). It pairs best with R2 astromechs (for many, many more green moves, critically including a hard turn.
  • R2 astromech enables integrated astromech, which is a non-trivial chunk of toughness for an X-wing.

Poe Dameron (PS9)

- Black One

- BB-8

- Primed Thrusters

  • Your best pilot has the most austere fit of equipment. BB-8 is nice, but he only gets his free barrel roll on green moves. If he's doing green moves a lot.....he's not going to be stressed, so he's not needing primed thrusters so much.
  • Yes, this means he can talon roll, then do a green move, and get his barrel roll that turn, but it's a fairly niche advantage.
  • By comparison, Pattern Analyser on Poe lets him talon roll and still focus....which means he can still have his focus token (to use his ability).
  • Much like Pattern Analyser, BB-8 works really well with push the limit - letting you 'cheat' the stress/action order to get an extra action in at no downside.

Suggestion:

  • PS9 Poe Dameron - Black One, Push The Limit, BB-8, Pattern Analyser, Integrated Astromech

If I wanted to make a 'manouvrable' X-wing list, I probably wouldn't start with Poe. He's good, but is best in the 'tanky' X-wings list with Red Ace and Jess Pava:

  • PS8 Poe - Trick Shot, R5-P9, Pattern Analyser, Integrated Astromech
  • Red Ace - R2-D2, Comms Relay, Integrated Astromech
  • Jess Pava - M9-G8, Integrated Astromech

By comparison, 'manoeuvrable' X-wings are the other pilots - Ello Asty, "Snap" Wexley, and Blue Ace. You can make those things dance like TIE interceptors on nitrous oxide.

  • Ello Asty - Expertise, Vectored Thrusters
  • "Snap" Wexley - Daredevil, R2 Astromech, Pattern Analyser, Integrated Astromech
  • Blue Ace - BB-8, Primed Thrusters, Integrated Astromech

Thank you so much Magnus Grendel! You made several good points. I will be tweaking my list accordingly.
