What's Your 2016 Year in Review?

By patox, in X-Wing

2016 is coming to a close and pretty much everything is out for X-Wing that we'll see for the year. And yes, we may never see SWX58 (which was the Starfield Game Tile Kit pt 2).

But we did see 13 new Expansion Packs. Averaged out that's more than one per month.

What was your favorite? How did it change the way you play? Any surprises? Overall thoughts? And what are you looking forward to in 2017?

For quick reference here's what was released in 2016:

  • Ghost
  • Inquisitor's TIE
  • Mist Hunter
  • Punishing One
  • ARC-170
  • Special Forces TIE
  • Protectorate Starfighter
  • Shadow Caster
  • U-Wing
  • TIE Striker
  • Imperial Assault Carrier
  • Imperial Veterans
  • Heroes of the Resistance

Arc is best thing praise 2016 for xwing

And nothing else **** this year

Also, with torp scpouts gone, almost everything on the list is viable

Let’s see, in 2016, I acquired the following expansion packs:

2 Ghosts

2 Attack Shuttles

1 Inquisitor’s TIE

1 Mist Hunter

2 Punishing Ones

2 ARC-170s

1 Special Forces TIE

1 Protectorate Starfighter

1 Shadow Caster

* U-Wing

* TIE Striker

2 Gozanti Cruisers

1 Imperial Veterans

1 Heroes of the Resistance

1 Raider (second in the collection)

1 Rebel Aces (second in the collection)

*TBD for Xmas, but will be 1+1

I added lighting to a Ghost, Attack Shuttle, 2 Gozanti Cruisers (sold one of them), 1 Raider, 1 Shadow Caster (almost complete), 1 GR-75. I’ve slowed down my actual repainting though, I’m not that good at it, and I enjoy spending my time putting lighting in things instead.

I had a pretty good tournament showing as well, taking Miranda + Kanan to top 8 at a regional, and top 16 to 3 other regionals, Kanan + Biggs to 12th at Gencon and top 8 at a regional a few weeks ago. For the first time since starting the game in 2013, I failed to win a store championship, losing the top game twice, and finishing top 4 two more times.

The VCX-100 is obviously the ship that I've been using the most and enjoying, but I also enjoy casual games with the ARC-170 and Rey. For as much stuff as was released, there doesn't really appear to be any duds, with the Attack Shuttle being the closest thing to a dude at the moment, though I believe that's more of just a lack of a defined roll in this meta. We'll see how the U wing and Striker balance out once the dust of W10-part1 settles.

In 2016 I started playing X-Wing, did quite well at it in tournaments and the like, then decided FFG can't balance it for ****, might well quit by year end. I see little reason to continue.

Bitter much? Take a look at the recent regional results or worlds results and then tell me that they can't balance it for ****, at least compared to ANY other competitive table top game.

2016 review...hmmm....

Did any of these ships cause the Rebellion to SWexit or Make The Empire Great Again ?

Wait, what are we talking about???

I've been playing for almost exactly a year and bought one of every non-epic (and one epic) imperial ship this year, still waiting for Strikers.

Thankfully never had to face triple jumps and generally really enjoyed myself at all the events I played in this year. I'm slowly tweaking and finalising my competitive lost going forward and I'm really happy with what I've got so far.

Can't wait for 2017, especially getting hold of an Upsilon finally.

My little X-Wing Year in Review:

Fav ship released: Shadowcaster
Least used ship released: Mist Hunter

Fav event: Yavin Open
Best event placement: 2nd, Stevenage store event, UK
Fav event prize: Yavin Open Shield Tokens

Had another amazing year in this hobby. Spent time with friends at awesome events and made new friends. Every single game I played, whether I won or got totally destroyed, was fun and worth playing.

Cannot wait for next years events and releases. Every new preview article is like a mini-Christmas morning for me, even after all this time. And I am already making lists for the next Yavin Open!

Thank you FFG, and thank you guys for an awesome place to chat about plastic spaceships that we push around a table.

Here's my review:

Most used ships: Defenders and Protectorate Starfighters

Least used ships: Misthunter and Ghost

I tend to be a very aggressive player and enjoy maneuverable ships, so Defenders and Protectorates are really suited to my playstyle, while their token dependance had me bring Carnor Jax back to the tables to mess with everyone else's usage of those ships.

Favorite tournament: Asturian Regional (Spain). The location, organization, price, food/drink and most especially company were unbeatable.

Most notable moment: winning the French National, beating two uboat and two palpaces lists in the top 16 with neither Palpatine nor a jumpmaster... or even a large ship. I really disliked playing against uboats but fortunately FFG fixed soon after, and while I find that playing against Palpatine can be tedious at times (though I am guilty of using him from time to time) he's not quite as bad as long as I can focus him down quickly.

In 2017 I'm looking forward to basically doing more of the same and meeting new people and playing more games in this great community. I'll surely be trying to figure out how to maximize the use Bo-Shek's game-changing ability and the Quadjumper's auto-tractor beam token. I also can't wait to try out the strikers' pre-maneuver maneuvers and am eager to get the beautiful upsilon shuttle on the table.

I am not really into playing this game. The nearest game stores to me no longer host Star Wars nights. So, the nearest game stores where this game is played are tens of miles away from my home, in an area notorius for its traffic jams (during the holiday season, a major highway near my home, was highlighted as one of the worst in the country and drivers should expect a traffic jam of a few hours), and I do not have friends who I can play this game with.

For me, then, I am into the collecting of these ships for display. I love the quality and detail of these models, and that they look great when displayed. The last two models released have movable components, and my Lambda-class shuttle has movable wings. Having this range in ship component parts, which are movable, gives choices when I display them.

Got into the game in late 2015 after buying the (original) core set, a Falcon, Y-Wing, T-Adv, -Bom and -Def.

Then, this year I got most of the ships (I lack the Scyk and the latest waves - It´s not that easy to find in S. America), and got someone else into the game (past the purchasing stage).

Don´t play enough, theorise too much, but love the game and the quality of the figures.

I´m happy with where it is, but I won´t be getting all the new releases, I´m more interested in the mats for now as I have plenty of ships to experiment with...

@!%# 2016

My year in review is no one gives a ****. If it can get any worse, it probably will.

Thing is my personal/public/professional life has gotten so down thanks to 2016 economy I had to drop from X-wing for a bit. I am planning on catching back up but 2016 sucked and all the cost of living priorities that I was able to keep up with tripled on me. I had to readjust and it has been brutal.

In the mean time Facebook want to make me a video to remind me about 2016 and all I want to say is "Shut Up Facebook!".

In January I made a New Years resolution to fly every pilot (and title for epic ships) at least three times. I failed. Not miserably, but man, there are just so many pilots! I flew every ship at least once, and most pilots at least once, but with so many new releases it was difficult to keep up. I will keep going with my challenge though, and hopefully I will be able to fly everything.

Favorite new ship: Fang fighter/Striker

Favorite upgrade: Snap Shot

Favorite Meta: triple scout nerf

My year in review...

Ma Scum bros finally got some good toys.

Fangs, Caster, Manny, Scum Crews, even the Misthunter is okay when flown right.

Defenders finally got good. People may scream OP but remeber there was a time when these guys were on the 'don't use' shelf with the Punisher. Also BOMBERS!

Rebs got some good stuff. VCX, ARCs, Uwing. Good crew cards as well.

All and all it was a good year. Just let us forget the dark time at the beginning with UBoats.

I discovered the game in February of this year. I don't own any epic ships, the Ghost, Decimator or HotR, but otherwise have everything else, more than one of most things. So I have jumped in with both feet. I may attend a tourney some day, but it's not a high priority. I am primarily a wargamer, such as ASL. I love x wing for the quick and easy play in a hour or so, as opposed to the multiple hours for most wargames. I play casually a couple times a month with my 13 year old son or with my wargaming friends. So I call it a good year since I found a new game that appeals to me and has staying power. Not sure my wife agrees with that opinion. :)

All and all it was a good year. Just let us forget the dark time at the beginning with UBoats.

Which unfortunately was 7 of the most relevant months of the year. Personally, I found this to be an incredibly disappointing year simply because 2015 felt like the game was really starting to develop some strong ship diversity that had me incredibly optimistic for 2016. The first couple of months were great, but the UBoat just showed how easily things could go wrong. It wasn't a bad year by any means, but the UBoat really homogenized the game in its wake and made for a pretty stagnant year overall.

Started playing in August; loved the concept of strategy and skill in the ability to predict, analyze and antcipate the manevuers of others within the gameplay; I have almost every ship except the Decimator and Rebel Transport ( I know R5-P9  ) I love its a thinking game; only played in 1 store tournament hopefully I can expand that to 2-3 by the end of 2017!

Fly Casual...

Won my first Regional this year, flying that beautiful piece of design work that is the Fang fighter (backed of course by Manaroo and Asajj). A properly balanced high risk/high reward ship that is insane fun to fly and rewards careful decision making.

So much variation in lists right now at local events, too many different lists to poke a stick at. 2017 is shaping up to be a lot of fun. Great game with a great community.

2016 was, by and large, a steaming pile of poo. As far as X-Wing goes, it is the year I began to lose interest and got REALLY tired of a constant stream of expansions that are bloating the game without adding a lot of value.

What i love:

Ghost - so many options and fun to play.

New Falcon - some love for the old dog

New Poe - 45 points of being awesome

Death of torpscouts - i just hated the list, not cause i was loosing to it, but cause it killed so many options

What i have mixed feelings about:

Defenders - i love them, i play them, i bored of them cause they are frakkin everywhere

Lots of stress - i both love this control cause its new fun element (or old but developed) and dont like it cause its killing some old stress builds

What i don't like

Too much autodmg added to the game.

ummm highlights were I eat a pizza and saw a film

I only really started playing about this time last year, so it's been a good year for me. I'll try and recall it all...

Bought every Imperial ship at least once, and all of the Scum ships except the HWK at least once. This was purely by chance that I didn't get into Rebels, though I'm not regretting it much from a gameplay perspective.

Went to a dozen or so tournaments. Started out 14/15, then 10/20, then went up as high as 7/24, winning a range ruler at a Store Champ, before hitting a fairly major skill plateau which has more-or-less persisted since. My first Regional I went 4/2 with Imperial Trip Aces (Vader/Soontir/OL, just after Jumps started getting big) and have since failed to better that record at a major tournament, going 2/3 and dropping at the UKGE regional, 2/4 at day 1 of Yavin and 1/2 during the Hangar Bay. Yavin was not a good weekend of x-wing for me, but on the plus side I did my first cosplay as a TIE Pilot and had a whale of a time with that. I'll be doing another one next year. Since Yavin I've been setting myself little mini-goals at tournaments, things that don't involve winning outright, to give myself something more realistic to aim for, which has been helping a lot more with my enjoyment of events where I don't do very well. My wife analogised this to the low-ranked guy who lobbed Roger Federer at Wimbledon and was super chuffed about it apparently.

Went 2/4 at nationals, at least partly thanks to some nasty matchups (glittercrack brobots twice when running a TIE Swarm, and never having gone against them before with said swarm), but I managed to kill Dash/Ghost with it, which had been a bugbear previously, and I did have one game of absolutely abominably dire dice against a 4-ship Rebel list.

Put in a mediocre performance at UKTC, but managed to kill a tokenless Soontir with Rage Baffle Quickdraw before he could fire, which was my goal for the day. And at an xmas tournament the other weekend, managed to one-shot (yes, one-shot) an x7 defender (5 die Homing Missile from N'Dru, and it was without a focus token, blanked out, drew direct hit with the one crit).

Looking forward to 2017, bring me my Upsilon.

Gotten properly back into miniature painting and modelling, and am really enjoying that aspect of the game.

And yeah, properly loved Rogue One.

Before I got into this game I'd sort of forgotten the extent to which I really love Star Wars so I'm super pleased I got into it, even if my wallet aches a little bit.

Highlights of 2016:

- Winning more tournaments than I don't.

- My rebel friends got a good boost.

- I watched the 3 x contracted scout build (which I refused to buy because it was stupid) die a slow and terrible death.

Lows of 2016:

- The Defender got a fix before the T-65.

- My generic E-wings are still broke, and they came out at the same time as Defenders.

- Not being able to buy 4 or everything. I still need a Shadowcaster and Ghost to complete my year.

Best moment:

- Winning a tournament with a Wild Space Fringer. I versed a Ghost (double-TLT shots and all that...) and escort, but won with some skilled blocks. It came down to the Fringer versus Zebb attack shuttle. I dealt him blinded Pilot (Mangler cannon - too many crits to cancel...), and dealt the final blow in the next turn.

Worst Moment:

- Flying punishers.
