Improved parry "advanced" trait

By drallcome, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi all

I understand that traits are not resrictions unto themselves and that they may be subject to GM discrestion. So with that being said the improved parry action card says "advanced" does that suggest that the character has to be in an advanced career to aquire this card or does it simply mean it takes the place of another action card?

You do replace the old card with the advanced version, but I don't know if that is specifically what the trait means.

I think the "advanced" trait just means you must have the basic version before you can buy this one.

The only thing the rules say is that if you have the basic version, then the advanced version replaces it. So you can't have both a basic and advanced parry, for example. I don't think there is anything that would force you to have to have the basic action before buying the advanced version however, since if you don't start with the basic version and later raise your characteristic to qualify for it, you have to purchase it as a separate advance. If I choose not to and instead raise my characteristic again, then I could puchase the advanced card without having purchased the basic card. Might make more sense to pick up the basic card and use it while you can, but I think you could do it.

I just think it makes sense to have to buy the basic version first before you can buy the advanced version.

If you have never played the guitar and decide to learn it, you also start with the basics before you can start with the advanced stuff. Sure, a lot of people start with the "advanced" lessons because they think they're good enough to skip the basics (and because they heard Stairway to Heaven) but in the end, they are forced to go back and learn the basics (or their closet gets filled a bit more with junk they'll never use again).

I don't dispute that it makes sense, it just technically isn't required by the rules. I'd house rule it to be so for my game though.
