Playmat bubbling solution?

By Sygnetix, in X-Wing Off-Topic

Does anyone have a solution for out of the box new playmats with bubbling? I've submitted tickets but I'm scared about what the automated robots will tell me, I thought I'd turn to the community for help. One mat isn't bad, just a little along one edge. Another is largely unplayable in its current state.

Even hypothesis will help.

Thanks in advance,

Syg

PS: Yes, I double posted this to the Armada forum as well.

I haven't seen this. Two things I can think of:

1) If you haven't already, try and return/exchange the mat where you purchased it, especially if one of them is unplayable.

2) Pop it into a clothes dryer at the lowest setting (I think the setting is for delicates). Once it is done, lay it out on a flat surface (table or floor) and place a heavy book or box over the affected areas.

Hopefully as it cools, the bubble will have flattened out and your mat holds its (new) shape.

Obviously, doing the second suggestion may damage your mat or dryer and you are ultimately responsible for your actions.

Best case is that you can exchange it. Good luck. Keep us updated.

I have the same issue with one that I just got, used one time and starting to bubble.

Need to look at it again and try a solution.

I bought my mat online at Barnes and Noble, wondering if I contact them, or Fantasy Flight directly,

Start with returning it to the store it came from. Or at least contacting the seller.

People don't send complaints to the potato farmer when your French fries aren't done right.

I just picked up the starfield and Bespin playmats from my LGS today (finally got them back in-stock) and my Bespin mat came right out of the box with a ridiculous amount of bubbling. Unfortunately, my LGS only had one available and no one else in the area has this particular mat so, unfortunately, I can't exchange it. I really don't want to return it as the mat is gorgeous (great colours), but the amount of bubbling is unacceptable for a brand new $50 product. Looks like I'm going to have to contact FFG and hopefully they will take care of me; at least I've heard great things about FFG's customer service. What I'm worried about though is that FFG's online store is showing out-of-stock for the Bespin mat, so unless they keep some in reserve, I'm not sure how long I'm going to be waiting. I'd really hate to have to return it. :(

Thumbs up for FFG/Asmodee - replacement sent out today. Hopefully, it'll arrive in a couple of weeks.

What do you think you'll do with this bubbly mat? Cut it up into coasters? Mouse Pad? Padding for a custom dice tray? Door mat? Bath mat? Bib?

Not sure to be honest. I was thinking I could try and fix it and maybe give it to my neighbour who I'm pretty sure plays X-Wing with his kids too; not sure it's fixable but he might not mind the bubbles. If he already has one then I'll keep it as a spare or maybe donate it to one of the local clubs/game shops. Could also use it as a top for a custom dog bed for my Lab - perfect size. :)
