Liked the 2nd part of the movie but not the first one. It felt more like a Star Trek than a Star Wars. Three of my friends have also seen it so far and have the same opinion. Many characters arent exploited to their full potential and there are some downtime.
Despite the gravity of the situation the emotional impact of this film is much lower than Force Awaken. It's a shame because every ingredients are there for an amazing experience but the seasoning is a bit off. It's missing that special spice...
With Lord and Miller, it looks to be in good hands.
Young Han Solo Chronicles spin off TV series on ABC for the win! (Or not)
So the highlights of the Solo movie:
Han meets Chewie.
They run into Lando.
Falcon changes ownership
Really, I DONT want to see any of this, I want to see new and unexpected stuff. We've read about this stuff before, talked about it endlessly, if the new movie needs anything it needs something along the lines of the original Han Solo Daly novels, just a crazy adventure where Han can be Han and IF we want backstory it's just a quick flashback.
Tbh it's the worst sort of spin off they could be making in my opinion. I don't want to see more prequel stories of established characters.
Rogue One was great (and refreshing) because all we really knew was that the rebels would successfully get the plans, the outcome for most of the characters was up for grabs.
The Fett idea at least had some potential, theres a big gap in his life story at the moment which never the less has some implied events (his acquisition of the armour and recovery of Slave One for instance) but no specifics. And we have a lot of characters associated with his youth who we don't see later in the universe. Hell we don't even have much cannon characterisation of him as an adult anymore. Plenty of open scope there.
But with Han you just know it's going to cram everything we know about his life story into one plot. He's going to meet the wookie. And Lando. And it's going to end on the falcon. It'll drain the tension right out of it.
But really what I would like are side plots which only tangentially related to the core franchise. A tense military drama about the crew of an Arquitens damaged during a routine stop an search of a freighter which turned out to be hutt cartel, trying to get back to the fleet.
The story of an Alderaanian tie pilot hearing the imperial propaganda about his home planet and realising it's all lies. Will he defect, or perhaps try to become an informant?
A light hearted adventure romp about an academic whose hunt for an obscure artifact leads him to stepping on the toes of a local crime boss. Now he's dodging bounty hunters, and hiring unscrupulous goons of his own.
Just anything except the backstory of. Badgers* we already know.

When I heard the mouse had acquired Disney I was sort of glad. I figured worst case scenario they make a couple of 'safe' films dictated entirely by market research all written by committee and generally avoiding letting an individual get too much power and making another phantom menace... And we got Force Awakens. Exactly what I expected. Enjoyable, safe.
Then Rogue One blew me away. I never expected them to actually make something like that... And I'm glad that trying something different for the franchise seems to be paying off for Disney... But I'm worried that they will take away the wrong message.

These are the guys who took a stupid concept as a movie about Legos, and turned it into something AWESOME. I trust them.
wait we have another trilogy episode before we get to see young Han (that will end with him walking into the Mos Eisley Cantina)
I personally think they should have just left it alone, look what happened when all of a sudden half the OT characters are in Revenge of the Sith in shoehorned parts (ok maybe just Chewbacca, but still). I wish they left a subject such as this to our imaginations, something that's a conversation point, not expanding upon every inkling they can. I hope it will be great, and am ready to stand corrected, but I'm overly fond of this movie as of now.

I get the impression that the two Han Solo trilogies of books were quite popular. Why not apply that concept to movies?
