Whisper. Can he brace 1 point of damage?

By Mad Cat, in Star Wars: Armada Rules Questions

Can Whisper use a brace defence token on one point of damage?

It wouldn't reduce the hit, but just to get the extra move?

Yes I could scatter it but I may need that later in the turn.

Yes you can. You can spend any defense token during the step, but its effect won't be felt till later.

You can Redirect with no shields. You just can't bounce any damage anyway.

Same with evade at short range, contain with no crit...

I'd started what was probably better reply earlier, but apparently fell asleep in the middle of writing and never posted... whoops.

Whisper gets an opportunity to spend his defense tokens against any attack that targets him.

This includes attacks that Miss.

But it does not include attacks that are cancelled due to there being no dice to roll ... (Such as an obstructed Counter 1 shot)

But why would you waste a defense token like that?

Just to move a distance of 1?

I don't see the benefit there.

Dutch shoots you for 1 damage and deactivates you. Wedge is also engaged with you and already gathering 6 blue dice so you brace and move out of range.

You can also use it to reposition out of a combat to join another. Move to range 1 of Jan but not her escorting X-wing and take a shot.

Seems to be used best in the squadron phase where several engaged squads will not be able to chase you unless they have rogue so you can get out of range of 3-4 fighters.

Its a move.

Could be "Right onto the station to heal that 1 point of damage"

It's always best to know what you can do, for when the need arrives. You'll be happy you can. There is always that one situation where, "ugh. Too close wish I could move after defending" comes up.

Why stop there? Whisper can brace zero damage and just gtfo.

Sort of gives imps their own little tycho, though not quite as effective.

If Tycho gets jumped by 4 squadrons his scatter soon runs out and he is in trouble. If Whisper gets in the same situation he can be safely away after 1 shot. I think I prefer him.

It's a corner case. Lots of very unusual but potentially significant opportunities. Maybe moving 1 lets Whisper engage a bomber squadron on turn 6 that's about to activate and deal the killing blow to your flagship. It could happen, and if it did you would be perfectly legal to use a defense token sub optimally. Your opponent might complain, but he'd be wrong.
