Solo playing

By danI2020, in Mansions of Madness

Hello everybody!

I have a quick question. I just entered the world of Arkham, buying the new Arkham Horror LCG and I enjoyed it a lot. I want to ask you if MoM 2nd edition is worth buying, considering I'll be playing it mostly solo. It is quite expensive and I want to know if the experience of solo playing is good enough, or is better played with more players.

Thank you :)

I have played solo a few times and it's a great experience.

However, it does get better with more than one person due to the chance of going insane in my opinion

^- This.

If you are solo playing, and obviously controlling and making decisions for multiple investigators, it becomes somewhat difficult to remain "true to the game" if one or more of the investigators goes insane.

The reason for this, in case you don't know, is that when an investigator goes insane, they draw a card which can, and often does, change their own winning conditions - and these winning conditions are suppose to be kept secret from the rest of the investigator party.

In addition to that, I think the game simply is more fun with multiple people, both from a social aspect, as well as from a game play aspect. Multiple people involve different perspectives as to the best way to achieve some goal, they often have different insights as to how to solve puzzles, etc.

It simply is more enjoyable.

Thank you for your answers.

I just ordered the game; I manged to find it in a local store and surprinsingly I got a 15% discount :)

I know the social aspect is adding to the game, but unfortunately there aren't many people into board games around here and around my age... This is why I said I'll be playing mostly solo. But from what I saw and from what you said, it seem to be enjoyable enough :)

90% solo player here and love it!!

Is there a specific reason why they would need to be both into boardgames and around your age?

I.e. how does age enter the situation?

Being a co-operative game, practically the other people don't need to be into boardgames if you sell the Mansions of Madness experience to them in some other way. (For example as an interactive lovecraftian horror story.)

I'm 46 and people around me aren't at all interested neither in board games, nor in lovecraftian stories, at least in the region I live :) . I practically know nobody who read Lovecraft, or at least know who he was. They spend most of their free time drinking or gambling or just sleeping :) . I have only one friend with whom I play board games one in two weekends or so, but he is more into D&D fantasy stuff.

Now, the younger people are more interested in computer games and they are talking only about fps and resolution and textures and so on; it seems like the subject of the game doesn't matter anymore. If I talk about board games, I'm the old creepy guy :D . Truth to be tell, there are some youngs at my local hobby store, but they are into Magic only. I dedicated a lot of my time and money to Magic and from a couple of years I just took a break, deciding to explore some other games, too.

My daughter is 15 and she is interested only in boys now, and my wife doesn't know English... So I have to play with myself. That's why I'm interested in solo experiences ;)

the app supports different languages regardless of the edition you have of the game, so possibly the wife could join :)

Sorry, the "gambling, drinking, sleeping" scene seems to suck completely. Mansions is a good game for solipsistic evenings, so, you should be good here ;) I'd suggest you to download the app (it's free) and try one scenario (cycle of eternity) just by app play, to see if you like the stories and how the app is structured

I already downloaded the app and it seems to be quite nice. Unfortunately, it doesn't have Romanian language and I don't think it will have it any time soon ;)

Today I'll receive the game and I can't wait to try it.

The solo experience for me is a bit dry, like solving a puzzle, however played as a group of 4 Chuthulu nerds and it,s a blast, a great evenings entertainment!

My wife did not know anything about boardgames or cthulhu when I met her. She is a permanent member of our investigator team now. :) I suggest that you ask her to play with you once. You can translate her everything she encounters. You can help her decide which move she makes. Perhaps she enjoys the story and both of you have a fun time together. Just like watching a movie. You can control 3 investigators and she can have one. Just a suggestion.

I'm not a fan of solo playing boardgames but this game is perhaps one of the games that can be enjoyable solo. Have fun! :)

We use our MoM minis for the LCG. Makes a much better atmosphere.
