First Impressions

By CEOWolf, in Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Well First off: Nice Artwork very atmospheric and dark and gritty and scary... o.O (those ghouls yikes) I really like the player cards as well that spell with the guy's head disintegrating very cool.

Game Wise: Well I certainly suck... I tried doing Scene 1 that did not go well... (Do people choose Per Investigator as per player cuz I cheated and just decided that the boss of Scene 1 was dead) And I'm not sure a bowl was the issue or a bag would've worked better but my god I was really bad.... Failure failure failure... Automatic failure like 3 times on very important checks... (not to mention a lot of encounter cards were major issues..)

Also did 2nd encounter Daisy and Wendy? Yeah not good at fighting so much... That hidden cultist jeeez!!!

Tried 3rd encounter and was like "Seven monsters... At once? Game Over"

Maybe I'll do better with another player amount of misplays I did due to forgetting...

I recommend you stick to the first scenario if have problems beating it.

It is the practice scenario, and the difficulty ramps up after it.

I'm wondering what's going on on your table, as my play group has yet to lose this one.

So keep trying, and you'll get the hang of it.

Of course drawing tentacles a lot is bad luck, but that shouldn't happen every game.

If you play 2-handed solo, give Roland a chance.

I know you don't like him, but he's good, and it's fun to beat stuff up.

Him & Daisy can just plow through the first scenario.

Tho those 2 share seeker cards, which could be a problem with 1 core set maybe.

I played the first scenario 4 or 5 times before moving on to the second and third scenario.

I did the same, too. I played first scenario, then read again the rules I wasn't sure about, read the forum, read the faq, then played again. I repeated the process a few time. Now I'm (almost) sure I'm playing it right :)

I played the first scenario yesterday with a friend in easy mode and it was surprisingly... easy though we didnt get into the cellar and the attic. We got very lucky in the token draws.

It's... not really possible to reach a succesful resolution besides dying a horrible death if you don't go into the Cellar and Attic. You need enough clues to advance the act deck... and the Hallway has no clues, the Parlour is blocked off by its text. I think you may have missed something important!

Someone explain exuasting and enemy engagement to me? No sure I grasp concept very well.

Unless you play Easy mode, it is next to impossible to beat a scenario the first time. E.g. in the first scenario you have to know what is coming at the end and gear up for it to survive, unless you are uncommonly lucky.

But this what I like about this game: You explore, you fail horribly, you get to know the scenario, you plan and prepare for what you know you have to expect and eventually earn your success.

Someone explain exuasting and enemy engagement to me? No sure I grasp concept very well.

A Ready Enemy will engage an investigator as soon as they "meet" at the same location. An investigator can take an action to engage an Enemy (Ready or Exhausted) at his location. If it was engaged to another investigator before, the Engagement is transferred to the new investigator.

An Engaged enemy goes to the investigator's threat area (but is still considered to be at the same location as the investigator). It will move with the investigator and use attacks of opprtunity whenever the investigator takes an action that does something but evade or attack the enemy. If the enemy is also Ready, it will attack the investigator during the enemy phase.

Evading an enemy breaks the Engagement and exhausts the enemy. Exhausted enemies will become Ready again during upkeep phase.

The "Prey", "Aloof" and "Massive" keywords change this default behavior.

One thing to be aware of: You can attack(Fight action) an enemy at the same location whether or not you are engaged. If they are engaged with another character and you fail the attack, you do damage to the character they are engaged with. You DO have to be engaged with an enemy to do an Evade action on them.

Also, exhausted enemies cannot use their Retaliate ability and will do no damage during the Enemy Phase. Attacks of Opportunity only happen when the enemy is Engaged with an investigator and is not exhausted.
