Siege of Skytower - Wings of War

By Ispher, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

We are going to play Siege of Skytower in 2 days and wonder if Belthir is stunned in any case whenever he lands after having taken flight or if he is stunned only when he lands while carrying a monster. The rules text of Wings of War says:

"As an action, Belthir may take flight. If he does, he may choose to carry 1 non-large monster adjacent to him. Then, the overlord removes his figure from the map and places him on 1 of the unique spaces. If the space is occupied, place him on the closest empty space to that unique space. If he is carrying a monster, remove that monster from the map and place it adjacent to Belthir; Belthir and that monster are Stunned."

When Belthir takes flight alone, is he stunned when he lands or not?

Thanks for any help in resolving this!

Unfortunately given the wording I think this is subject to interpretation.

This never came up in the multiple times I've played Siege of Skytower because Bel'thir always wanted to transport someone.

I'd personally say that if he is traveling alone, he should *not* be stunned. This makes sense for me thematically, as Bel'thir isn't carrying the significant weight of a monster (imagine flying a living suit of armor around!) that would make him winded upon landing.

I don't see the game being significantly affected either way. An FFG official errata/clarification would likely be the only way to truly resolve this one.

My assumption would be "no". The stun effect is part of the sentence beginning with "If he is carrying a monster..." When he isn't, that sentence would probably be ignored. I agree that it is debateable.

Thank you for your replies. In the end, we played that Belthir wasn't stunned when he takes flight alone, but just as with Charmy's quest, he never took flight alone the whole game, so it didn't matter.

It was however a rout for the heroes: the Overlord won on turn 5. With expansion monsters (Giants and Hybrid Sentinels), it seems to me that this quest heavily favours the OL. Two zero attacks (one X, one 4 shields roll on the black die) on the Master Giant in the first round didn't help: the heroes were able to kill him but couldn't pull a lever, allowing the Master Hybrid Sentinel to escape on the second turn.

Giants are a great choice on this map to defend the lever room I used them myself as well.

It does come down to some luck in those early rounds. Even giants can go down fast if they roll bad on their black die. And if the heroes are losing they can always try to go for the 'consolation prize' of downing Alric Farrow if the OL tries to get his points too.

I find it might be a slightly-OL favored quest if all monsters are available, but its definitely winnable by the heroes. Rellegar's Rest favors the heroes a little more, but as heroes I prefer the guaranteed Staff of Light from Siege of Skytower. Its a great relic - combos very well with some builds, such as a Bard with Understudy.

Got the official answer from Nathan, which is what all of you assumed: No, Belthir is not stunned if he is not carrying another monster.
