According to something I read some time ago. George had said that the force was out of balance because of the Sith, and that the dark side is not just the flip side of the light side. So to bring balance to the force actually meant removing the dark side's power that was clouding the console's view of the future. I believe he changed his mind after the fact or something.

But the idea that Anakin is supposed to bring balance to the force, and that means restoring the balance between dark and light really makes zero sense for the Jedi to be for this.
