First Tournament: What should I know?

By fezthedruid, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

So this weekend I am attending my first tournament with the following list:

Deployment:
[8] Bossk
[2] C-3P0
[1] Explosive Armaments
[3] Gideon Argus
[8] HK Assassin Droid
[1] Temporary Alliance (M)
[7] Trandoshan Hunter
[10] Trandoshan Hunter [Elite]

Command:
[0] Celebration
[2] Close the Gap
[0] Deadeye
[0] Devotion
[0] Expose Weakness
[0] Fleet Footed
[1] Marksman
[1] Marksman
[2] Parting Blow
[2] Parting Blow
[1] Price on Their Heads
[0] Take Initiative
[3] Take it Down
[2] Trandoshan Terror
[0] Urgency

This list was made using the tabletop-admiral site http://tabletopadmiral.com/imperialassault/ which I would encourage you all to look at. This list is similar to the Scum list I have posted previously, with additions of some HKs and removing IG-88 for Bossk. I tried deploying 2 rTrandos with an rNexu and found that they die way too quickly, especially against Twins. The eTrandos seem to be just over the threshold for damage so I prefer them at the moment. The list is quite slow which is why I have tried to include speed enhancing command cards. Another point of contention for me is whether to take Explosive Armaments or Devious Scheme. Going second is really important as it's the difference between getting shoot someone with the HKs or getting shot by someone, but is Explosive Armaments just so much stronger on a focussed HK with the green and yellow both having a high surge probability?

As I say, I am intrigued by peoples thoughts and as I still don't own a copy of Under Duress, that is sadly off the table.

Thanks,

Fez

I say play what you've practiced or are comfortable with. I've found Prey on the Weak to work well on Bossk/HK. You want to keep your HK in the back as they are easily killed, but Bossk needs to flex in and out, and not stay on the front too long. Under Duress isn't as good as you'd think. Explosive Armarments looks good on paper, but if you're playing against a lot of Rebel White Dice lists, you won't hardly get it off so your devious scheme may be better.

Changes I'd make if you are interested

Get the command card Negation from Hoth set and use it

Element of Suprise is a must take for me. it comes in the core set I believe

Primary Target is a must take in a list like this for me.

I've always found Take it Down to be less useful or harder to use in game bc Gideon is always moving someone and focusing someone for me and is rarely adjacent later in the game.

Single Purpose could be useful for 3P0, Gideon or Bossk.

I'd drop the elite trandos to regular and take Greedo or Hired Guns just to have a few more activations and terminal campers or objective runners.

I'm not a big fan of Trandos in any form. My friend plays them, because he was trying to get an Under Duress thing working, but in the end, I always thought they were Speed 4 "Melee" units with 6/8 health. Yeah, that +2 ACP is brutal, but now they are up front and are going down. They don't live long enough for Under Duress to be a thing to worry about. At least when I played against them.

HKs/eHKs though, Bossk... they are brutal. Especially when Gideon/3PO are there to buff them up.

Didn't even realise 'til now that this was you - hope you had an enjoyable first IA tournament and that we'll see (both of) you at the next one.

Thanks for the shout out for the website!

Fez,

Did you learn that the games don't quite get to 40pts in Tourneys?

Give me three of your take-aways.

Probably a bit late now sorry but I've tried to do a video last night going over my tournament prep and what I think people might need.

Fez,

Did you learn that the games don't quite get to 40pts in Tourneys?

Give me three of your take-aways.

  1. You don't have to run at the enemy turn 1, sometimes, hiding behind a door is fine.
  2. Target priority is one of the most important parts of the game. Knowing the lists and what makes them tick means you can easily target the key pieces (Leia in twins etc.)
  3. Most missions are over by halfway through turn 3, this means you better be able to move quickly and aim at your opponents unactivated troops.

Hope this helps! I'll do a proper write up soon enough!
